I have downloaded copy of civ3 not the actual disk and i was wondering if i bought conquests would it still work and also i am only running 1.07 so would it still work with that? if not is it worth it to spend 40 dollars on civ3 gold edition or just stick with vanila.

Fireball: *cough* Points to the fact that there is multiple sites where people can buy & download Civ3 online legally. Calm down.

Potatoe: I have no idea the answer to your question, sorry. However I can tell you that many, many people have come to this forum complaining of a wide variety of problems with downloading Civ from these sites due to their customer service being a joke & it's alot easier to reinstall something if you have a disk.

I'd recommend that if you really enjoy the game, go out and find a deal on Civ3(in the box). It will save you a major headache in the long run. Try Amazon, ect ect ect..

Then while you're searching look up the price of Civ Conquests. I picked up my copy online for $10 US from Amazon. Don't waste your money on Gold, Conquest has everything it has & oh so much more.

[edit- Here's a listof brand new Civ3 games in an unopened box that you can get starting at $8 US.
Here's a list of prices for brand new boxes of the Conquest expansion running around $20 or so. You can probably search around & find it cheaper then that or used & way cheaper then that, but that's a jumping off price fore you.]

Hope this helps.

Why not support this GREAT game by not buying it? We're waiting for Civ4 because the sales of Civ3(and expansions) were good. It's so cheap that I'm sure you can afford it(the Vanilla Civ3). Conquests cost more, but adds so many new features, that it definetly worths it's money.

Take my advice and buy it. Furthermore, buy the disk and not the download thingie: anything could go wrong with downloads.

I love Civ3 so much, that I didn't only bought/ordered it for me, but I gifted it to my friends at their birthdays.

Like GK said, there are a lot of places where you can d/l the game (and pay for it) but it doesn't include an installation disk. Yahoo!Games on Demand comes to mind. In fact, it's one of the most popular games there.

Now, I can't speak for other services, but if you're using Y!GoD, you can't upgrade to conquests. They have the files locked in a proprietary format that requires you to be online, and use their decoder to play the game. I haven't tried this, but since it doesn't install the game, I'm guessing that you won't be able to upgrade to C3C, because there are files/registry keys that are missing that the C3C install will look for.

I would contact your d/l provider and see if there is a way to upgrade it. They would know for sure, instead of us here guessing what's going to happen.

To back up what Turner just said, there are many sites now where you can download a *demo* of Civ3, and get 60 minutes (?) of free playing time. You have to purchase a key to unlock limited play.

However, what I have gathered from discussions in the various forums is that these downloadable version almost universally cannot accept the patches, nor be upgraded to PTW/Conquests.

I think I saw one of those demo downloads for the gold edition once, it came as PTW, but im not sure, never seen a conquests one though, maybe just because conquest is newer.
