civ3 strange lockup

I'm a happy Civ3 fan and enjoy playing the game very much. I'm still a beginner who hardly beats the game on the Regent level, but I'm learning :-)

Needless to say, it's very annoying when your gaming experience is disturbed by down-to-earth technical problems, but unfortunately this is what's happening to me now. I'm wondering if any of you can point me in the right direction as to what should I do.

The symptom: in modern era, when my bomber attacks an enemy city and a fighter comes shooting it, either the bomber or fighter wins, but then, the game just goddamn locks up. The unit that won stays hanging above the city and remains selected in the 'selected unit' box. I cannot select any other units, scroll anywhere or open menus, but some animated units on the same screen (workers) continue their animation, so it's not totally locked up. However, the only solution is to terminate the game task because it's not responding to any of my action.

It's kind of random because sometimes everything goes well after an air battle. However I have a savegame where I can reproduce the lockup every time.

I'm using civ3 patch 1.29f. My machine is a normal gaming beast - p4 1.4ghz 512ram gf2mx400/64m. latest nvidia drivers (29.42) installed. Tried playing around with video settings - still same happens :(

I also sent this to Infogrames support, let's see if they can work it out. But meanwhile could some of you give me any pointers?
 
I only got a load of crap from their tech support which instructed me to do pointless things like disable background programs and update my video and monitor drivers, yet I explicitly told them that I have all the new drivers. Damn I hate those copy'n'paste replies flom clueless supporters :(

However, I discovered one thing myself - disabling sound effects (not all sound, just FX - music may remain playing) makes the problem go away. I refuse to believe that my sound card/drivers are problematic since this is the only application having any sound problems. I suspect something has been messed up in Civ3's sound/video sync.
 
Hmm, this is my first post here. I was going to post for this exact same problem.

Darn Its my first regent game where im doing well, I used bombers to take half of France territory, they had been defending with fighters most of the time from the start of attack, but as soon as a jet fighter came to defend the game locked up, had to control alt delete to get out, then I restarted and had the same problem 3 times in a row, I tried disabling souund fx but that didnt work. This sux

BTW is this a new problem with the patch?? if so I will reinstall, I cant imagine geting all the way to 1958 on a large continent map again just to see this happen, I cant play any style though if this is going to happen

USE THE DRIVERS, WHICH COME WITH YOUR CARD.

I think some lock-ups are caused by you getting the jump on the AI controlled civs. Similar lock-ups seem to happen to me when I turn the tides of battle against the AI. hmmm
