I see that the bashing is just as prevalent as ever.

I'm guessing that we didn't like the patch?

(By we I don't mean me, I think the patch is great)

I also think the patch is great. I also love the game, and feel it is in every way a worthy successor to the name. 'nuff said.

You know, you get this kind of ranting on every board, no matter how good the game is. The better the game is, the more excited the people get about it's shortcoings. The people on this board are tame compared to the lot at Madden Central. Personally, I think the game with the patch rocks. It's not perfect, but I'm very satisfied with the 60 bucks I spent for umpteen hours of enjoyment. Just my 2 cents....

I believe if a company put out a game that would laegally let you print your own money, SOMEONE would whine about it! LOL

Haha, so true. I personally feel very sasitfied with the game and the patch even though sometimes the combat pisses me off. For example when a regular warrior manages to kill 2 of my legionaires

I was highly p!$$&@ when I had 5 cavalry attack 1 musketman )fortified on grassland) and all 5 were destroyde and did NO damage at all to the defender. Still trying to figure that one out!

I know, my frigate got absolutely wiped out by a galley!

But I'm quite prepared to overlook the small shortcomings in the game because it's such a great game! I think Firaxis did a brilliant job on the game, and you can't please some people. Look, I'm a critic. Most people are shocked because I think Red Alert 2 wasn't a good game. But I still think this is one of the best games I've ever played.

Anyway, on to the point: my complaints. I think the biggest complaint I have concerns the Editor. You can't set unit positions and you can't set civ-specific starting locations - how are you supposed to make a scenario? Another complaint I have concerns multiplayer. Almost every game known to mankind out at the moment has multiplayer, but Civ 3, one of the best games ever, doesn't - what's up with that, guys?

Obviously there was something in here that was a bit to close to the bone why else close a thread. Since the moderator actually reads these posts could you please inform me what precisely is being objected to and expound on what financial interests Firaxis or Infogrammes or third party associates have in this site. This is still a relevant view on this subject but if bias is being shown towards civ3 fanatics then one can draw his own conclusions.

If you like I could post 10 different reasons why I don't like the game especially after civ2 but I haven't seen much from the positive side in the comments. Stop whinging is hardly likely to enhance customer satisfaction nor give Infogrammes and Firaxis feedback which they should be looking at. They made the design decisions; they decided to hide everything in the exe file to prevent clones (at the expense of patching!!); they decided to remove the replayability and flexibility in civ2; they don't want a long lived product but something they could rush out for Christmas shopping and make a quick 50 dollars a copy on ( result is a product full of bugs) then have an expansion pack etc. etc. etc.

There have been several questions asked specifically about the editor (mine just hangs on entry yes and I did remove the game reinstalled and applied the second version of the patch downloaded: Only way out is CTL ALT DEL a few times although I did get into it once on the old version but found it doesn't do saved games). I only want an editor to modify corruption settings so I can have a proper game on a huge map.
It would be nice to develop my own civilisation but English will do but it irritates me when I put in a male name and king and still get called Lady.

It is unfortunately a modern trend where marketeers make all the decisions based on ripping off the gaming public. The want a tightly controlled game with an expensive strategy guide (sooner develop my own thanks all the same) expansion packs and add ons all with reduced costs in programming design and audit. I suspect these guys have never played a game hence they don't have a value on playability. Judging by the scores given by computer gaming magazines I suspect that they are probably owned or getting bungs from the distributors so I no longer buy them: There are other sources on the web which give far more accurate assessments from gamers themselves. I'm not against companies making money especially when they provide something worth having then we would be glued to the games not stuck with them.

If people want to debate merits of games like adults then any forum has to welcome both positve and negative feedback. The negative is more valuable if valid since that should lead to improvement.

Something like that happened to the British once (John Paul “I have not yet begun to fight!” Jones). It was very embarrassing.

Of course, they blamed Firaxis. :D

Hardly helpful comment but there you go.

Sorry. Couldn't resist. ;) ]

The most famous frigate battle in history resulted in the actual capture of a British frigate by a rebuilt French merchant ship.

I'm da man!!! I was at war with the Romans (I'm the Americans); and had the last Roman city under seige waiting for fresh troops. I am blind-sided by an attack by a Roman army with 3 archers in it (all Regular). They wiped out a swordsman with little damage to themselves; But I countered with a veteran Swordsman ... AND KILLED THE WHOLE ARMY. And my Vet. swordsman still had 2 HPs. left !!!! [dance] It sure feels good when it goes your way, trust me!

It was not a frigate. It was the Kent, a first-line warship.

Frigate Serapis

After conducting sea raids on the coast of Britain, [Jones] took command in 1779 of a rebuilt French merchant ship, renamed the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard to honor Benjamin Franklin. On September 23, 1779, Jones engaged the British frigate Serapis in the North Sea, daringly sailing in close, lashing his vessel to the British ship, and fighting the battle at point-blank range. During the fight two of his cannon burst, and the British captain asked Jones if he was ready to surrender. Replied Jones: "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight." The American crew finally boarded the Serapis after the British had struck her colors, and from the deck of the Serapis they watched the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard sink into the North Sea.

It really is a great game, Sven, isn't it?

I didn't mean to make light of your lost frigate. I guess it's never humorous -- if it's your frigate.

:)

Ok, I was thinking to another naval fight, the capture of one of the biggest english waship by the privateer Surcouf.

I really love the historical analogies in Civ (though I'm not one who insists on exact historical accuracy). I will check out the story of Surcouf. Thanks Akka.

Have you noticed that privateers don't work very well in Civ3? They almost never attacked anything but trade ships, which don't exist in the game.

If it were (insert game producers here), they would produce a machine that prints $1 bills when you insert a $5 bill
