Civ3 v. WC3 sales

I think Marketing has a lot to do with the number of WC preorders. I mean, I've known WC III was coming out for about a year now... Back when i got my Diablo II expansion..... I've seen banners on web sites, watched a preview movie on a game i bought, and just word of mouth. When Civ III came out, I had no clue! I was hoping they'd release another and one day I'm looking about software at Wal-Mart and there it is. I was pretty shocked I had heard NOTHING. So maybe Firaxis marketing needs to take some lessons from Blizzard?

If you read gamespot or gamespy or ZDNEt you would have hear about it.

Yes, I'm sure you're right, but my point is I knew WC III was coming out without haveing to read those. I also could tell that it looked pretty cool and the advertisements made me wanna learn more about the game. This is effective marketing.

Joe Average Game buyer doesn't. :)

I say it also has to do with Blizzard's 'Don't Release Until the Game is Finished' attitude. If only Infogrames was like that.

Hahaha. Well said.

Blizzard's seem to just make publicity in US... I just know about WC3 by Games Magazines...

The question I think it is more the size of the target market than the publicity. Why is the Sims the biggest success in the industry?
Because even my girlfriend likes it!!!

And yes, Infogrames should only release when it was ready!!!

Well I remember before the internet and all the different viedo and sound cards programming than game was easy than simple with fewer bugs when release as company would have lost money mailing out patches to their games. I only once wrote to than game compancy once when than stragic guide mention than patch to Master of Magic and how to tell which version you have. They sent the 1.1 patch thought the mail on 3 1/2 inches disk.

Heh Warcraft2 is the game of all time IMHO =)

I actually went out to buy civ2, but couldnt figure if it would run in win311 so I bought warcraft 2, best thing I ever did. Did buy civ2 later though=)

Now I'm waiting for my collectors editon of war3 =)

Another thing about blizzard games, it may not be the best graphics, but the gameplay is always good (-craft games anyway)

So civ for singleplayer and warcraft/starcraft for multiplayer :)
