hello all,
first of all let me say: i have never played civ3 or civ3 conquests only civ2. i was looking through all my old cds and found civ2 and remembered how fun the game was. now i discovered there is civ3 and civ3 conquests and civ4 will exist. i used to love civ2 and would like to try the newer versions and i would like your expert advice.

what is the difference between civ3 and civ3 conquests?
is civ4 coming out pretty soon? should i wait for that?
which one should i start playing once again?

i'm sorry for the long post but i need your expert advice.

i know most must be thinking where has this guy been? i'm asking the same question since i've missed a lot since civ2 but i'm going to make up for lost time

thanks and best regards

welcome :wavey:

You can buy Civ3, it truely is awesome.
You should buy Conquests, it is an expansion pack with all these etra fetures.0
I would not wait for Civ4, unless you hesitate to but the two for, oh, another year. ;)

thanks for such a quick reply! from your answer i gather conquests has more tribes, terrain, challenges, etc. it's probably worth it since once we start playing it's pretty much impossible to stop.

once again thanks!

but be aware: you cannot play 'conquests' without civ3 installed. there is Civ3 from 2001, then there is Play The World (PTW) from 2002, an expansion including multiplayer options, and then there is Conquests (2003) which consists of PTW + rules adjustments + new civs + a bunch of interesting scenarios to address people who don't want to invest three weeks to win a game.
so carefully check the offers: there are gamepaks that contain civ3 or civ3 + ptw or conquests or all three titles.

what is the difference between civ3 and civ3 conquests?

Conquests added and changed quite a bit of game mechanics. Several new wonders, such as the Statue of Zeus and the Temple of Artemis were added (both ancient age). Bombardment from Bombers and the Hwacha can now kill units. Bombardment itself ignores citizens and improvements until defending units in the city are redlined first. Alphabet tech offers the ability to build the Curragh, a 1/1/2 scouting boat. The first Civ to research philosophy first gets a bonus tech. AI performs amphibious assaults more competently than vanilla/PTW civ (as evidenced in some of the sgs I'm reading). Two more traits were introduced: seafaring and agricultural. And some of the older civs had their traits changed e.g. Iroquois in C3C are commercial and agricultural as opposed to the original version of religious and expansionist.

There are lot of changes, to say the least.

I have only played CIV3 (vanilla?) up to the moment, played CIV 1, 2 and SMAC a real lot, I am at regent level and winning effortlessly... do you guys think I should switch to Conquest now?

Pick up Civ3 (vanilla) - no doubt. Play the World & Conquests are expansions to Civ3, but only grab Conquests as it includes all the new features that were in PTW.

Last I heard, there was a box set being made of the entire Civ3 collection. You may want to check that out. Either way, Civ3 is much improved from Civ2 - and each expansion adds new techs, units, features, Civs, etc.

Civ 3 Complete (which includes everything sold so far) is planned to be released sometime this fall.

Thanks for the replies.

Now only one thing is worrying me. I read through a couple of posts and noted that there may be some performance issues (waiting your turn, computer lagging, etc) in Civ3 Conquests so I am a little hesitant. Do you think this is mainly to having big maps and many civs (so the problem exists whether you have conquests or not) or is it only happening in Civ3 conquests?

once again thanks! for the replies and for having such a great forum!

C3C doesn't run particularly worse than Civ3. Most of the people having performance issues are playing giga-maps with lots of players.

I'm happy enough with PTW1.27 for now.

If money is no option then I would go ahead and get Conquest. Otherwise, I would check the aftermarket for PTW.

Even vanilla Civ3 is going to be a major challenge compared to Civ2, so you'll probably be happy with any flavor.

Each of the games have good challenge. Civ3 and ptw have different tribes and some unit controls were added.... that is about it. Conquests added a new trait(agriculature), new tribes, some unit controls, FP is defined differently, new gov't... oh boy and the secnarios...

C3C is a very different game from civ3 but the units/cities/tiles are the same... for the most part. The way corruption is dealt with is, in my opinion, much better.

What exactly is the difference with the corruption in C3C?

i would suggest waiting for civ 4 or if ur anxious pick up a cheap civ3/ptw combo-
unless u want to play multi player ..which would require u to buy Conquests because most if not all players on multi player use it...

Look at it this way - a Huge randomly generated map in Civ3 is 160x160 and loads only terrain and a settler/worker per Civ in game. These people complaining about load times are generally playing custom scenarios that are often times over 300x300 in size, include more then the default number of Civs, and in addition to settlers/workers - have multiple cities, roads, and terrain improvements to load up. The only other complaints come from multi-player, but then most people play by email anyway - which has no lag. Needless to say, they chose the ambitious gameplay & thus shouldn't complain about it. Don't worry - load times aren't a problem!

I'd say pic up Civ3 which costs very little right now. Then, if you like it, you can buy Conquests (which contains Play the World).
Don't buy Civ3 Gold (which is just Civ3 + Play the World), otherwise you end up paying for Play the World twice when (if) you buy Conquests too.

tbh I didn't like civ3 after playing civ2 for ages..... didn't seem as finished, never got into it - really seemed buggy/lax tbh.

however i bought conquests and it does change it alot, for the better, play it as much as I did civ2, and its nicely complicated...... I'd definitely recommend the civ3/conquests duel purchase.
