I bought Civ II Complete for my wife 4 months ago. It install on her Windows 98 computer and runs now problem. I also installed that copy on my computer and it ran, no problem.

In order for us to play multiplayer together, I bought another copy last night.
I uninstalled the previous installation and installed from the new CD on my own Windows 98 computer.

The install went through, but whenever I try to play the game, I get a window saying:
"This application is not compatible with the installed operating system. Please upgrade to Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 or better."

Does this make any sense?

The box doesn't say 98 SE, and I know the gaem runs on my wife's PC!

More info:
The disc that works on my wife's PC was from Atari

The disc I am trying to install on my PC is from Take Two Interactive.
Their tech support person said it's a bad CD and to take the CDs back to store for replacement.

I think that's probably bunk. The installation went through fine, it's just that the game won't play on my 98 machine.
Support person suggested installing this on my wife's machine to see if works there.
(Umm, uninstall the only working version we have ... yeah)

Anybody have any ideas?

OK, now Take 2 says that Civ III COmplete categorically will NOT run on Windows 98, but must have Windwos 98SE.

This is a blatant lie. The fact is that the CD-Key checking program that is on the Take 2 CD will not run, and their tech support doesn't want to figure a way around it.

So, if you have Windows 98, look for the Atari label or you too will be out o' luck.
