Civ4 GOTM51 Final Spoiler

@Htadus

Sounds like you had a pretty good game to me. What was your early game plan to have been invading the 2nd continent by 600AD? If I recall, it took me a lot longer to get Astro.

With that fairly early date, I would think that your knights would have been much more effective. In my game I was fighting the AI at a later date and I used a lot of knights to good effect. They were especially effective vs. archers – and when I invaded (don’t recall the exact date but it was certainly later) the AI was just starting to get Long Bows. I would use knights to take out more marginal AI cities while a bigger stack of maces/cats would go after the well defended ones.

When I decided to go war route for this game, it occured to me that getting to the other continant is going to be the biggest problem for speed. So I basically beelined toward Astro with a few deviations for needed techs.

I used the Oracle for CS. Cottaged all the good tiles. And skipped the Liberalism alltogather. Now that was a mistake since I had planned to get MT from Liberalism. Somehow I deviated from my plans but that is OK since I was able to finish the game resonably. I got Asto in 550AD and I had 5 Galley's already built. So I uppgraded one and sent a sort of a recon team. I had finished both Monty and Hatty and was taking down Tokugawa. Actually the real invasion with 7 galleys did not take place untill 700 AD. Sorry for misguiding. Had I chosen to rush units via slavary the game would have gone faster but I have a hard time with the concept. That is why I am a builder :(.

Here is a cleaned up log upto 550 AD

@Htadus

Thanks very interesting write up. It looks like your early focus on econ/building might be the optimum choice for this game.

I aimed to knock out the Aztecs and Egypt pretty early on. I ended up with amazing production, but my tech rate was much slower. It was also a bit of slog to take them out and by waiting until maces (as you seem to have done) they would have been much easier pickings.

Challenger. 1556 AD Diplo Victory. Score: 5’893 (base), 109’398 (Noble), 87’518 (Warlord).

Settled 2E on PH.
Without scout I couldn’t find Monty’s capital fast enough, so I had to build 2nd (and the last one) worker by myself.
Early AH and Horse resource allow me to control all strategic resources on the continent, stealing workers and get XP for my units.
Since I was going to build a lot of wonders, I take Monotheism (Judaism+OR) before PH, and my CS sling date wasn’t good enough (880 BC).
I was gambling with GP points after all wonders I have built in the capital. Was unlucky and 1st, 2nd and 3rd time was born GE (15-20% odds every time). Finally got my 1st GS at 710 AD and GP built shrine at 1118 AD. Later I get two GA’s with 10-12% chance, so I couldn’t start 3rd Golden Age.

After met all other civilizations I decided to go for UN. At that time MM founded Christianity and spread it to Cyrus and KK. Izzy spread Buddhism to Alex, but it didn’t help her much and she was down to single city after earlier war with Alex.
Cyrus was 2nd in score and population and looks pretty strong to keep that place. So I decide to convert KK and Alex to Judaism, and get other diplo bonuses with them.
Probably, my finish wouldn’t be so slow if I beeline MassMedia. But I wanted good score too, so I take Biology from Liberalism (instead of Radio) and decided to take MM’s core cities for more land and population.

Spoiler some final ScreenShots here :

Oh, and I never trained a single UU as well.

1640 AD diplo victory, 24,750 score

Monty died quickly. Diagnosis: too many Amazons with axes, not enough archers

Hatty got to live for awhile so she could build some cities for the Amazons to take. She died from terminal mace/cat disease.

After getting caravels out and finding the other continent, the plan for a diplo victory took final shape. Everyone except Alex on the other continent had adopted Judaism. Thus, be nice to everyone but Alex by gifting techs and trading resources, and instigate/join wars against Alex whenever possible to get the shared military struggle bonus.

Toku got to live as the "opponent." Took three of his cities. Two were razed to allow better border expansion by Hatty's old cities. One was kept as the future home of the UN.

From there, it was a beeline to Mass Media. My biggest failure in the game was losing the Pyramids to Cyrus by two turns. Without representation, it took longer to get there.

Since the Amazons had such a big tech lead, the Amazons gifted techs up through Liberalism to the Jewish bloc and then bribed them to convert to free religion to eliminate the shared religion bonus between them. Probably not necessary, but something to do.

The UN was built, rushed by two GE's, and control of Edo was returned to Toku.

The vote occurred thereafter. The Amazons won easily, supported by Mansa (+17), Isabella (+12), Cyrus (+11) and Kublai (+8). Toku voted for himself and Alex abstained.

Question: Since Mansa was the only one on the other continent who got far enough to send out exploring caravels, the others had never met Toku. How could they know the UN had been built and a vote was being taken?

Posted by one of the "elite persistently mediocre" (currently 34 in combined global rankings, varying between 20 and 40).

I played with the Contender save, as it is a rare treat to try out the Warlord difficulty level.

My goal was to play a militaristic game. I'm decidedly more of a Builder player, usually going for Cultural, Diplomatic, or Space games. The odd time that I get a Conquest victory usually occurs once I've built a very solid empire and can use Infantry or better units to take over the world.

What I learned with this game was that if you are a Builder and you want to play a militaristic game, there is one and only one philosophy that you need to follow, and that is to ask yourself:
What would I build in this city in a regular (Builder's) game?

Once you have your answer (such as a Market, a University, one more Monastary, etc), then make a point of NOT building that building. Haha. Build something else. Pretend that you are Montezuma and override your tendencies by claiming that every second build has to be a unit! :ninja:

I also wanted to try out the whole "Lightbulbing" strategy, where early Great People were not settled and did not become an Academy. Instead, I used them mostly for techs:
Machinery (250 BC)
Astronomy (245 AD)
Hagia Sophia was rush-built in my Great Person Farm (500 AD)
Philosophy (770 AD)
Education (1106 AD)
Printing Press (1214 AD)
Divine Right (1226 AD)

That's not a lot of Great People, nor did I get them particularly quickly. I also missed out on the Bureaucracy bonus for most of the early game and the extra Science from an Academy.

Although I picked up Astronomy pretty early on, I didn't have much of an army. I was still mobilising at that point.

5 AD stats: 7 cities, none captured. Strongest unit = Axeman

245 AD stats: Built The Colossus that turn--partially for denial purposes (I didn't even get 1 turn of use out of it, since I Lightbulbed Astronomy during that turn), but mostly I built it because I let my Builder tendencies get in the way of a fast military victory. 8 cities, none captured. Strongest units = Swordsmen & Crossbowmen

500 AD stats: 10 cities, two captured (one from each of Montezuma and Tokugawa). Strongest units = Swordsmen, Crossbowmen, and Catapults

800 AD: Tokugawa eliminated

875 AD: Montezuma left with one city so that I can get a tech for peace

905 AD: War with Mansa Musa

1070 AD: Mansa down to 1 city

1085 AD: War with Cyrus

1178 AD: Cyrus eliminated

1184 AD: War with Kublai Khan

1238 AD: War with Montezuma (he still only has 1 city remaining), also War with Isabella

1244 AD: Kublai eliminated

1256 AD: War with Alexander

1274 AD: Montezuma eliminated

1280 AD: War with Hatshepsut (now I am at war with everyone, having declared on Mansa a second time in there somewhere)

1304 AD: Isabella eliminated and Alexander eliminated

1310 AD: 4 AI cities remain. I am within a few turns of capturing or razing all four of them. The Domination Land Limit was exceeded at this point, giving me a decent Final Score, but not high enough to break the 100K barrier.

As for World Wonders, I built (too many), building all of the early-game Wonders except for Stonehenge and Chichen Itza. Had I skipped many Wonders and gone conquesting my neighbours earlier, my fast Astronomy date might not have been so wasted.

As it was, Galleons made for very efficient warmongering against both Montezuma and Tokugawa, so getting Astronomy early had its uses.

As soon as I'm not zipping through the city screens anymore, I always press the windows button. This causes civ to minimize to the taskbar. After I bring it up again, it's fast again. Maybe this will work for you too.

I stumbled upon this fix as well. Anyone know why it works?

BTW, where's the thread for pre-game discussion of GOTM52?
