Civ4 has lost the "one more turn" status!

this has not gripped me like civ3.
which, while it does produce some sense of disappointment, maybe a good thing seeing as i have real life commitments these days.

Civ4 has lost the "one more turn" status!
Nay! Not for me. In fact it's worse than any other game I've played. I've had AOEIII for a couple weeks now and only looked through the manuals and not even loaded the game yet. Cuz it's all about "one more turn of Civ4".

Civ4 to me has one more turn potential - and in fact I have played one single game for over 30 hours of play time. But there is something... missing, for me. Perhaps because it feels like the game has evolved to make my preferred play style - conquest - the least preferred, least addressed facet of the game.

That said, there are a number of truly great changes that are so good you go "why didn't they do that before"? I mean, the biggest might be that unhappy people don't throw your city into total lack of production, just act as a drain on the city. I mean that's been ACHING to be addressed, and it has...

Also, with the problems I've had, perhaps my string is shorter than some for trouble.

The kicker was the border system post conquest. To me, it renders the game not unplayable, but tedious beyond willingness to suffer. Perhaps some changes will take place to capture my interest.

I do see why the original poster feels this, as I feel some of it too, but Civ4 has a number of worthy features that earn it a place with the other games.

For me, Civ III lost the one-more-turn status first (as long as you ignore certain Civ II spin-offs rather than the original Civ II). I haven't lost it yet with Civ IV - I haven't even begun to have finished playing it.

I haven't even reinstalled Civ III. And I don't I'll ever will.

I haven't reinstalled Civ3 either. And I don't see that happeining until a couple certain mods are updated for C3C. Like SOE V5!

I have to say that, if anything, Civ4 has regained the rights to the 'one more turn' franchise that it kinda sacrificed in Civ3. Don't get me wrong, Civ3 had some really great features, and I certainly loved the game in its own fashion, but it definitely never gripped me the way Civ1, Civ2 and SMAC did. Can't say this for Civ4 though-I find it highly addictive, most especially in the Ancient through Renaissance eras (my favourite eras of all such games), and have found myself starting a game and then wondering where the last 3-4 hours have just gone (usually around 11pm to midnight on a worknight :mischief: ). I also am running far more games in just the 2 weeks I have had civ4 than I did in the entire time I have had Civ3. Lastly, this is the first time I have even bothered to try MP in a civ game, and it truly rocks. Now, does that make Aeson's view of the game wrong? Well, no IMO, because it reflects his personal experience and opinion of the game, and I am sorry to hear it was a negative one. I, on the other hand, am majorly looking forward to my next big game of Civ4 :)!

i missed so many things on what civ 3 had but civ 4 doesnt.. for example.. millitary academy, sun tzu, helicopter transport.. and most of all.. i missed the paratroopers.. for god sakes BRING THEM BACK IN THE NEXT EXPANSION!!

Civilization 4 is my favorite Civilization of the bundle.

The main reason is that Conquest and Domination are no longer cake-walks as they have been in the previous games. No longer am I steamrolling my neighbours without giving a second thought to any, "Ifs" and "Buts"

However, if I turn a blind eye to one of my major cities in Civilization 4 and leave it barely defended, they'll capitalize on it, drop 4 swordsmen and make me cry.

Thats never happened to me before in a Civilization game.

Yeah, I know it sounds wierd, but the best thing I like about this game is that it is the very first time I can remember actually having to BEG an AI civ to stop a war-because he was either beating me, or the cost of holding off his forces is simply costing my economy too much (from the switch to vassalage, nationhood and the like!) Just the other night, I lost both my Holy city of Lyons and my port city of Rheims to a Roman assault and-though I finally got both of them back-I was by that time ready to offer the Rome almost anything in order to stop the war!!!

I guess I just don't see the source for all the whining....the game installed right out of the box without issue for me. I've had no slowdowns, no CTDs, no graphical meltdowns...just hours and HOURS of FUN. Civ is FUN again after becoming a "one strategy/exploit" trick pony in Civ3/Conqests. :shrug

I understand the feeling. Most of the time I just feel I am playing to beat it silly again (played civ2-3 on diety).

The new rules makes it interesting. I the last game my science halted because conquered and newly settled cities where not only non-productive like in civ3 but a drain on the total economy.

But the game doesn't get me anymore than that. All the things that were wrong with civ3 are still here and even worse. The AI cheats as much as ever. Even on lower difficulties (prince, monarch) they conspire and really never tries to be anything more than a pain in the ass on player. Diplomacy has never worked in Civilization games, and it still doesn't.

Without other civilizations as opponents it just becomes a munchkin world builder/tactical game for annihilating the opponents by using the game rules to the maximum.

I'm sorry, Carewolf, but I have YET to see any example of AI cheating-of ANY KIND!! I have seen my fair share of AI vs. AI wars, ones which I have either been asked to assist in or have joined in on to perhaps curry favour with a more powerful AI (which might be what you are viewing as 'conspiring' of AI civs), or which I have stayed out of altogether. I have had an annoyed AI civ go to war on me and-when I was clearly in a weakened position-have had a second annoyed civ start up a conflict with me. This is not CHEATING, but good strategy, and I would do it myself in the same position. I also have strong allies in Ghandi, Hatty and Mansa Musa-and they are REAL allies this time, not the 'stab you in the back as soon as look at you' types you got in Civ3 (or Civ2). As Vertronix has rightly pointed out, what makes this game so brilliant is that conquest and expansion are not the sole 'keys to victory', but where multiple strategies for success exist, and are the kinds which smaller nations can utilise as well as-if not better-than larger ones.

This game is boring when you have lots of cities and are winning. So just play it at a higher difficulty level and you'll be fine.

I would miss things, if not for everything new and improved that Civ4 has brought to the Game of Civilization. I think Firaxis gave the civ community everything it asked for and more. And as individuals, with individual likes and dislikes; we have been given the tools and the access to Mod this game beyond recognition if we so desired. And this game is deeper and the play is broader than any of its predecessors. Think of everything we do have, and you will soon forget anything you don't have.

Oh, and I know that at least one person is working on Paratroopers right now. :goodjob:

Aussie, are you playing the same game?

Try asking other civs what they think of eachother in the beginning of the game. They will all reply "pleased" when they have only meet, while they will treat you as suspicious.

And what do you mean by real allies? That you kept them bribed with gifts the entire game, and caved in to every stupid demand they made?

I have yet to see any AI act in any trusting fashion. The closest are puppets I've kept in check through superior force. It seems they only take you seriously when you can annihilate them without any real effort.

cIV definitely has given me the "one more turn" bug again. C3C was cool, but I could stop a game without a problem. With cIV, I've literally been dragged off the computer by my wife (about an hour after I said I'd stop)! I don't get a chance to play it every night, but I can squeeze in quite a few hours on the weekend, and let me tell you, I don't want to stop playing it. Never. Sux at 7am after a night of playing and having to watch my 2 year old! Although, he gets a kick out of watching me play (for about 1/2 hour).

Go cIV!! You're stealing my life away!!

I can't agree with the title. The more I play Civ4, the more I love it :goodjob:

Likewise. For me one more turn syndrome is as strong as ever if not moreso.

I respect the right for everyone to have their own opinion. I'm of the opinion that Civ IV is the best Civ yet.

Game is just out, too early to say. A year from now we can say one way or the other. But I suspect with patches, mods, and maybe an xpack either arriving on on the near horizon, Civ4 will be going strong.

Meanwhile, I've still got CivIII on my laptop.
