Civ4 Newbie, strategy support Please

People do read your posts, its just that there's not much to say apart from whats already said. Lymond and others gave you excellent advices, the rest is practice. Play a few more games, concentrate on your goals and you will prevail.

CornPlanter makes on a excellent point. At this time it's just about get in some practice games which will eventually make discussions more relevant to you. Try out a few more games and then run a walkthrough game on the forum in which you post saves at different points in your game and folks will give advice. Some may even play along with you if you post a starting save.

On thing to keep in mind. Time victories are okay at first but really you should start looking at the other victory conditions which enable you to finish a game earlier - era wise - and try out new strategies. Try playing out each victory condition in a different game. Your choice of victory condition is not always determined first thing but based on factors like the map, other civs, success/failure, and the flow of the game. I'd say that between 1AD and 1000AD you should start to have a pretty good idea of what VC you want to achieve. Note though that of all victory conditions, "Cultural" is one to try to focus on as early as possible - it can be one of the hardest and has probably the most unique strategy. Domination and/or Conquest can usually get you early finishes and high scores if executed properly - but that not always important. Diplomatic can be won via both the Apostolic Palace and UN elections.

Good luck. CIV is a hard game to master but you should improve your game greatly in no time by reading the forum and practicing.

Are you getting BTS?

I just thumbed through this thread. Don't get discouraged if you lose or no one reads the thread. Just keep plugging along. Have you tried any NC games or looked at their threads? They're great ways to improve your play overall.

So ok. Another unsuccessful try on noble, but now I lose just because of 20 points  I tried the space race, and was winning but it finished too early.

Lymond, I need to get money and then buy the BTS, I don't want it for illegal means because I plan to read the manual and play online. Thanks I'll try it later, first I need to someway win in noble, then I will stay on noble trying to win in another conditions. A

NC games?

Thanks

Well thanks for all the advice!
Although I bought the game a year ago I just started to try to be better.
I saw the 'complete' at Amazon without the DRM and asked my wife for it. She isn't insterested as I spend enough time with Civ4. My Uncle would stay up late at night playing Civ2 until his wife got rid of the CD and he couldn't play it any more. I'm a bit like him.
I haven't tried the online muti-player version (single player only) because I assume I don't have enough time to dedicate to it. I may spend 4 hours one night and not come back for 3-7 days for another 2-4 hours of play. I am correct?

You can save it and play later, but it works only if you had combined with those guys, because then they will never return.

I do it always when multi-player, I could do it even with you... but it depends in which difficulty you play, I lose enough against the computer. :D

@Soundwave - I hope you don't obtain any games illegally...not well thought of here. Keep an eye out for specials. Steam just had a great sale on the complete edition but I'm not sure how it works in whatever country you are from.

Keep on Practicing!

On prince and below(it works above that too, but on monarch+ they all start with archery) an Early Rush can be quite potent. That's when you hook up a key resource(horse and/or copper and/or iron), get a bunch of units quick with whipping or what not and wipe out your nearest neighbor. This is especially a good idea when you're next to someone like that idiot Montezuma who you know is going to come after you.

Getting axemen and catching your neighbor when he doesn't have his strategic resources up and running can essentially win you the game really early on.

Yes, rushes can be very effective, but its very important to settle ON the resource to hook it up even faster...

it spares you about 4-6 turns by noy building a mine or pastory, which you can build roads and chariots with...

BTW: Archery is a deadstop... you dont neccesary need it unless you are Protective :)

Don't change your difficulty every time you start a game. Each level plays differently. If you stay at a level you can get a feeling for it, what is good and what bad. Move up a level if you start winning most of your games.

If you just started playing, prince is too high a level. On Nobel you and the ai get the same conditions. On prince, the ai gets some advantages over you.

It's no big deal if you loose games. I'm pretty sure everyone here has his or her share of defeats, I certainly did.

If you want to have more specific advice you should start a game and a thread about it with some screenshots.

Yeah I know it now, thanks.
I finally won on Noble, by time I almost by spacial (just left the engine but could build that just not on time, if I had 5 more turns.

Now I'll try to win each type on Noble starting by the Spacial race and for me have an motive to be fast I'll keep the time victory.

Thanks

I did my better game on Noble and by Space Race around 2030 and it was just amazing, I had more than 15 cities in some point and conquered most of the new world, but it broke my budget, anyway I tried to be the more peacefully is possible but I had no success, all my neighbors excluding the Persians were my enemies and they attacked me several time and had success conquering one of my cities which I get back later.

I get a lot of resources around my cities what make a boost on my economy principally because they were food resources and it grew my cities! I end with 3 cities in the top 5, also end with most population and territory.

NC games?

I know this was posted a while ago but just to clarify "NC games" refers to Nobles Club, where players from these boards all play a game from the same save to compare and learn from each others games and give advice and feedback to each other. Definatley worth checking out if your looking to further improve your game.
