Civ4 shuts down at startup - 'Check XML'

I reinstalled Civ4 on a PC running Vista; it installed OK, but whenever I try to start the programme, there is a 'Check XML' message, and then Windows cuts in with a message that Civ4 has stopped working. Any ideas, please? Directx is up to date, and Sound Card drivers also up to date, as far as I can tell. Reinstalling Civ4 made no difference.
