Civ6 6otM 03 Opening actions

That's awesome. Considering I'm at 13.6 it's certainly a different approach!

my beliefs are faith generating, +2 from quaries, +2 from all cities following this religion, +5 from synagogues, majority of my cities had holy site and at least shrine + I befriended almost all faith city states.

I'm new to Civ 6 and this is my first GOTM. I've only completed one game so far so my strategy is not very honed as I didn't do any research - I'll figure it out as I go along. I made a few mistakes early and had a significant setback but have managed to recover somewhat.

- Where did you settle your city?
I settled on spot - looked pretty good.
- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
I went for animal husbandry and mining to quickly access initial resources. I had a bit of luck early on as I discovered a natural wonder within the first 10 turns and got the boost for astrology so that was third. After that I went for bronze working. I was able to get theology recently and just recently got the boost for the Samurai tech which I will be researching next.
- What was your build order?
Slinger, Builder, Settler, Stonehenge, holy site. I made an error here by not saving a chop for the wonder and unfortunately I missed it by 2 turns so I ended up wasting quite a few turns in my capital. I chopped for the settler instead after spending charges on stone and a pasture. I had to adjust my strategy because of this.
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Pretty quickly after failing on Stonehenge. I shifted gears to get some early settlers and shrines and tried to maximize great prophet points. I was able to get 3 holy districts and several shrines. I did found a religion and spread it England.
- How did you place your districts?
I got a nice +5 faith adjacency bonus in my second city because of the mountain natural wonder which really helped. I placed on a river in the capital for a +2 bonus.
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
It was a bit tough because of the wonder build and England was constantly bringing units around. I also had Greece #1 creeping on my borders to the East. I managed to get down 4 cities and I don't have much room left so I'm beelining for Samurai to take out a few neighbors.
- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
I picked God King and Barbarian Combat boost at first then made use of the +50% settlers bonus and whatever civic boosts the faith adjacency bonus. I switched to Classical Republic towards the end of the opening and made use of the envoy boost. I think I also switched to the wonder production boost for Stonehenge.
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Yerevan first who I sent some early envoys to and actually bought their units to explore further east and eliminate some barbarians while I was expanding. The Brussels and Stockholm. I sent a few envoys to Stockholm as well.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?
For the most part - England is friendly and we have open borders and I've spread my religion there. Both Greek leaders have denounced me and I think I'll probably try to capture some Greek cities - they founded a religion first and have been especially annoying. There's already a bit of an apostle battle going on.
- How were the Barbarians?
A minor annoyance but they did provide the opportunity to get some tech boosts and I took out a few outposts.
- Any surprises?
I was pleasantly surprised with the natural wonder but I didn't take full advantage. I thought I had Stonehenge in the bag so I was pretty surprised when someone beat me to it. I was a little surprised at how much contact there was in the first 100 turns.
Please use spoiler tags for any surprise details you'd like kept hidden. Thanks.

- What was your build order?
Kyoto: Scout -> Slinger -> Builder -> Builder -> Settler -> Holy Site -> [purchase trader] -> Shrine -> Slinger -> Settler -> Settler ...
Sendai: Holy Site -> Settler -> Water Mill -> Archer -> Shrine ...
Osaka: Water Mill -> Holy Site -> Shrine
Gifu: Water Mill -> Holy Site -> Shrine
Nagano: Granary (no river) -> Holy Site

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Holy Site #1 completed on Turn 40. All cities have one.
x2 Commercial Hubs
x2 Campuses

- How did you place your districts?
Normal adjacency bonuses, mostly. Including trying to account for meiji restoration - but some terrain features got in the way.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
5 Cities, all with settlers built by me
Kyoto (pop 9) - settled in place
Sendai (pop 7) - settled NW up river towards London
Osaka (pop 5) - forward settled 9 ENE of Kyoto at river fork w/ Iron
Gifu (Pop 5) - settled between Kyoto and Osaka
Nagano (Pop 5) - settled S of Kilimanjaro on the shore
{currently no serious plans for future cities, maybe 1 in the northern desert}

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
See Civics above.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
I've met 11 city states, and have 1 envoy with 6 of them. I have 3 envoys (and am Suzerain) with Yerevan, La Venta and Jerusalem

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Yep, I seem to be able to keep a balanced approach with all of them. Greece went to war with Greece which was amusing. And now both Greek states are at war with Brazil.

- How were the Barbarians?
Not much of an issue, an occasional camp will show up and then get wiped out. I think the fact that there are so many city states and other Civ's near by that the Barb threat in the area is significantly reduced

- Any surprises?
Found a relic in a goody hut on turn 10! I haven't found the last Civ yet and only just met one of France's boats on turn 90. It looks like Paris is on an island?!? I have already converted 5 of 8 Civs. With France, Gorgo (who got Stonehenge) and the Unknown Opponent still remaining. I realize as a few more Prophets get recruited that will change - and I'll have to re-earn some of my early gains.

I have yet to see anyone discuss a trick for religion, so look to my religion section if you want a quirky trick!

To start, I've gotten incredibly lucky. Somehow, neither England nor Arabia did much exploring, so I was the first to meet every city-state in the west, except for Jerusalem and Amsterdam. Then, a completely startling event took place just south of Saladin. Poking my scout around, before I discovered Arabia, I see a settler escorted by a warrior. While normally nothing out of the ordinary, the settler belonged to Amsterdam. I have never seen a city-state settler, nor did I expect to. Well, next turn, the warrior charges after a barbarian, leaving an unprotected settler next to my scout. Needless to say, I now have a city just south of Saladin. After founding, I see what happened--Saladin is swarmed by barbs, enough that Amsterdam was fighting some, so it must have claimed a 'barbarian' settler. The last bit of luck--in my starting to get desperate search for Civ #8, Catherine sails up to a Scout on a coast I had healing (he died like 4 turns later too). Catherine wanted to exchange info on capitals--a proposition I found particularly nice!

- Where did you settle your city?
In place. Good spot with little reason to move. Speed is of essence, so no need to waste turns.
- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Uh, stuff. I went for the new gov't and then Theology. The rest (...I thought) didn't really matter. Basically, once I had Archery and the builder improvement techs, I just shot around randomly, as it wasn't likely to matter.
- What was your build order?
Scout, Builder, Holy Site, Shrine, 4x archer, 2x warrior, then other things.
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Holy Site around turn 30.
- How did you place your districts?
Haphazardly. Other than the Holy Site, the differences here seemed negligable. However, my Holy Site placement was incredibly poor--I placed it in the south, despite being on the Southern side of the map. If I had placed it on the North, I'd probably be able to win by 2-3 turns faster.
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
No emphasis of my own. I didn't push out a settler (and only built one) until Kyoto was size 7. I deleted two captured settlers later. While the cities might be useful, they would be cities I would have to convert. I want all conversion efforts on the AI, not my own cities (I have not spread in my own cities at all, and 5/6 are my religion, the odd one being just captured--read my religion trick for how)
I captured 6 cities so far, razed 2 of them. Brazil should be dead in the next 10 turns or so.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
The typical way
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Yerevan is essential. Otherwise I just kind of poke around.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?
They were, I was not
- How were the Barbarians?
For me, no problem. Saladin, Gorgo, and Harald had severe problems with them at various points.
- Any surprises?
Mt. Kilimanjaro being close, and my luck mentioned at the start.

-Religious Strategy?
First, I prioritized instantly converting as many of my own cities, without missionaries or apostles. There's an interesting quirk/design when founding a religion. Any city that has a holy site automatically becomes the new religion (granted, I have only done this with cities that do not have a religion, so that may be different). So, I nabbed a prophet around turn 55. I did not found a religion until turn 85 or so (the turn I could start building temples). At that point, Kyoto and my expansion had built Holy Sites, and London and Athens were captured with a Holy Site. So, founded a religion, boom 4 cities fully my religion. Within a few turns, my 5th city flipped, as did Brussels.

Other than that, I did not spend faith, I did not add beliefs. Once my temple completed, I bought an Apostle a turn, and 1 missionary in London for Saladin. Now it's just a speed race to reach the AI's and conquer Brazil. France will likely be the big problem (as has been alluded to, at this point I am 95+% sure France is on an island), but I expect to finish within 20-30 turns.

I played a practice game for this and felt the best way to advance the religious victory was to eat my closest neighbor for space and then capture the other holy cities to keep their religion from spreading. So that was my plan going in. Find the other civs, eat a close neighbor, spread the word of the Hindu!

- Where did you settle your city?

Settled in Place (SiP), I moved the warrior a bit north and saw only the one mountain, so the site looked lovely!

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Tech was Mining first to chop, then Astrology for Stonehenge. Headed towards political philosophy first on the policy side.

- What was your build order?
Slinger, Builder, Stonehenge.

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Holy Site first, to go with my stone circles for some missionary action.

- How did you place your districts?
Biggest adjacency bonus, including the Japanese bonus.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
I ate London with 2 slingers and a warrior. I founded Osaka near Kilmanjaro, and Shizuoka near Jerusalem. So 2 built 1 captured.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
Gold and Faith for Stone circles, then production. Added in Holy site adjacency and conscription when I got them.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
I know of 11 City States. Yerevan was the first one I found and the most important one to cultivate. Being able to pick apostle promotions is quite tasty!

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
No, they are puzzling. France and Norway declare against me and they are farthest away. Pericles spends 10 turns moving some troops my way, right under my archer's nose, to declare a "surprise" war that he can't finish. 4 archers are completely destroying him.

- How were the Barbarians?
When they don't have horses (which we don't have) they are quite tame.

- Any surprises?
Where France is was surprising. didn't expect that much water between us. The war declaration early from far away civs doesn't make much sense early. Seeing so many religious city states was a nice surprise, just getting 1 or 3 envoys can be very helpful. I was also surprised that England didn't put up much more of a fight, they didn't use their warriors very well to try and knock off my slingers.

Turn 103. I settled NNE on river (turn 2) so that I could build a Holy Site next to both city and mountain. I prioritized religious civics and founded Buddhism as the second religion (Pericles built Stonehenge). Beliefs include Stone Circles, 30% cheaper apostles and +1 apostle charge (from evangelized belief). I am (and plan to remain) suzerain of Yerevan. England DoW after I settled my second city close to London in order to secure the Natural Wonder. I captured both English cities plus a settler. I currently have 6 cities and the plan is to attack Pericles Greece (founder of the only other active religion) whilst spreading Buddhism elsewhere. Made some lazy timing errors but seem to be in fairly good shape for a "Warrior-Monk" Religious Victory.

Overview:
I am going to avoid taking out civs, since although that would make a religious game easier to win, it's not in the spirit of the challenge. I'll conquer some cities as need be, but will not take out a civ entirely.
I'm also going to change my usual approach. Usually, my approach is to maximize the march through the science tree. But, for this game, I'm going to worry less about that, and more about maximizing religious efforts. I doubt that, properly handled, the science deficit I might end up in will be important.

- Where did you settle your city?
Having looked west with the warrior, and seen lots of grass, but nothing in the way of goodies, I settled in place. There is a ton of stuff to quarry, and that will be good for the Stone Circles pantheon. There's also desert in reach.
- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Tech order was designed to try and get Stonehenge, then my Samurai. So I went:
Mining (quarries), Astrology (Stonehenge), Pottery, Writing, Currency, Math, Mil. Tactics (samurai) (Turn 93). After that, I took Irrigation to get plantations. From there it's been on a backfill basis (Animal Husb., Sailing, Archery (in progress).
Civics order was designed to get the Oracle if I could, then a new govt. (I've got to question why anyone would NOT head for Polit. Phil. ASAP given the way the game works). Order:
CoL, FT, Myst., Crafts, State Workforce (to get Conscription), Early Emp., and Polit Phil (Turn 79).
After that, headed to Theology (almost done), then Divine Right, followed by Reformed Church.
- What was your build order?
For Kyoto, it was Builder (12), Settler (on T22), Stonehenge (which I got beaten to on T39, just three short of being done!), Holy Site, Shrine, Granary.
For Fukuoka, it was Warrior, Holy Site, Builder.
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
- How did you place your districts?

Holy Sites in each of the first three cities, relatively quickly. Kyoto also has a commercial zone, which is next to the Holy Site. The Holy Site in Kyoto is south of the capital, because that got a bonus and didn't use up prime cog lands. Commercial hub is hex NE frm there, in the bend of the river.
In Fukuoka, the Holy Site is right next to Mt. Kilamanjaro, for a +4 faith bonus.
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
I ALWAYS emphasize expansion. I've built three cities via settlers. I've not conquered any yet; just wait until the three samurai I'm working on now are done. London WILL be mine.
- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
Discipline and God King to start. Conscription replaced that as soon as I had it, as the barbarians aren't really an issue. On Turn 79, got my change of government; instead of the usual Oligarchy, I chose Autocracy, for the yield bonus in Kyoto and the extra military policy (no need for green card as city-states not that important here). My cards are Conscription, Agoge, God King and Revelation. As soon as the prophet popped for me, Revelation was replaced with Urban Planning.
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
I've met Yerevan (first to it!), which is a literal Godsend. Also Stockholm, Brussels and Kandy. I'm the suzerain of Stockholm, courtesy of one envoy placed there, and two from bonuses.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?
So far, yes. Vicky has befriended me, and Pericles has not said much to me at all, beyond warning me not to interfere with city-states.
- How were the Barbarians?
Very passive. A barb scout ran through my land without doing anything to it at all; no barb military units have bothered me.
- Any surprises?
Well, getting pipped to Stonehenge by three turns was annoying (especially since I know I could have shaved two turns off by being more attentive to when I switched from maxing food to maxing industry). I'm assuming the Protestant civ is the one who got Stonehenge. Glad I didn't bother with The Oracle; would have been beaten to it, too.

- Where did you settle your city?

Settled capital in place.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?

First tech was Astrology. First build was a scout to get as many free envoys as possible, plus going into the game the plan was to settle a hex ring of cities to then build all my districts in the middle so i needed to see as much of surrounding territory as possible. I'm still kind of working on that plan, but geography and creeping additions to the plan have kinked it a bit. As is now, the center of the hex ring is to the NW of the capital, and there is a mountain in the way of eventually seeing all the districts clustered to get max adjacency bonuses by untiliizing Japan's unique trait. In retrospect, i think it might have been better to center the hex ring of cities to the SW of Kyoto, due to all the plain grassland in that region...with my center to the NW, i will be harvesting some good food bonuses, but whatever, with Everest to the West and the other abundant food, shouldn't be a problem getting rid of a rice or two. Second city i got close to London trying to claim all the adjacent land next to the natural wonder, third city was to NE of city 2, and my third city was settled to the NE of capital bc it looked like a great Petra site (creeping additions to the game plan). Got Petra, so that's cool.

- What was your build order?

iirc, build order was Scout>Settler>Holy Site. Normally i would've had a builder in there, but normally i wouldn't have chosen Astrology as first tech. Starting position had several great tiles even unimproved, so i went for the earliest possible half-off Holy Site (considering but skipping over Stonehenge). Worked out ok as i am pretty sure i was first to found a religion (next time i will take notes!). I probably could have chosen better beliefs, i'm always thinking longer term when GOTM is all about quick victories. I ended up choosing Feed the World and Pagodas, with Stone Circles as the Pantheon.
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?

I must've had my first Holy site before turn 20, as i started building it as soon as first tech Astrology was researched. Just finished with Education, so as soon as Kyoto finishes market in 1 turn will begin building Hagia Sophia. Will be looking to build the Mahabodhi Temple and Mont St Michel as well. Speaking of, i better get on the Mahabodhi Temple if I want it.

- How did you place your districts?

Still going for a big cluster of districts in the middle of the core cities. Requires buying tiles to do it right.

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?

I have 8 cities so far, 6 from my own settlers, 1 from London's settler after i captured London, and 1 captured, London (will be capturing her last city shorltly). Victoria DOWed me, i was going to play peaceful, but London was so close, and she started it. Captured the Oracle with London.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?

Economy, and switching out the Diplo cards to maximize Envoys.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?

I've met 10 altogether, currently Suzerain of Jerusalem, and it looks like i have lost that status with Yerevan and so will be looking to put more envoys there before building any Apostles.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?

All but Vicky so far

- How were the Barbarians?

As if they are turned off

- Any surprises?

Not yet. Probably won't get the victory before T150, but very likely before T200.

This is my first ever GOTM! Enjoying it so far. Aiming for less than T200 victory.

- Where did you settle your city?
In place. Didn't see any reason to move.
- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Beeline to Astrology. Then jumped all around the place based on eurekas and trying not to move up eras to keep warmonger penalty in check. Have not located three of the other AI at T100. I think someone is in the water SW, so have also teched for water movement.
Civics - beelined PP and then Theology. Have had slow culture production so have been relying on eurekas to move me through these. Went Classical Republic
- What was your build order?
Scout / Slinger (part) / HS / Slinger (finish) / Settler / Slinger / Builder / Archer .....
Other cities went HS first
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
Built HS as soon as I could
- How did you place your districts?
I have desert folklore as pantheon which is crazy strong with all the desert. One HS has +7 adjacency bonus! HS placed for maximum adjacency bonus.
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Not really. 5 cities - one captured (london) and 4 settled
- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
no priorities - moving around as a i need them
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
was doing poorly with CS. only meet two of them first. then at T88 was first to meet La Venta!! Suzerin with Yerevan. Plan on focussing on the religious CS with my envoys. No other AI challenging me for them yet.
- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Yes. Very. I DOW Victoria for London then sued for peace. Getting denounced a bit. But so far no other wars.
The two Greeces and Brazil were in a threeway war for quite a few turns.
- How were the Barbarians?
Unlike others, I had a slight issue with a barb camp that spawned to the west of my city. But built a small army to take care of it, and then used that army for London.
- Any surprises?
I still haven't found 3 AI by T100!! Hmmmm. Freaking me out a bit considering i need to convert or kill them. I'm guessing at least one stuck on an island?!
Civs are slow on religion. The two Greeces have a religion each. but no one else near the last two yet.

In place
- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Mining, Pottery, Irrigation, Animal Husbandry, Astrology, Archery (synergy with land; early wonder)
Foreign Trade, Empire (to start expanding empire)
- What was your build order?
Scout, Builder x2, Slinger x2, Monument, Stonehenge, Holy Site, Archer, Settler, Archer
- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
turn 46 for Holy Site
- How did you place your districts?
near best bonus (which also generally meant next to each other)
- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Nine cities total (1 initial, 3 built, 2 captured settlers, 3 captured cities)
- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
started Discipline, Urban Planning
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Met 10 so far; Suzerain of Yerevan, Amsterdam, Kandy, Stockholm
- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Yes, but I started wars with them, so...
England War turn 44-54; capture settler and get tribute
England War turn 64-67; capture settler and London (England gone)
Greece War turn 88-98; capture 2 cities (after this considered warmonger by all)
- How were the Barbarians?
Too easy. Annoying to scouts, but that is it.
- Any surprises?
First time playing for a religious victory or even building something religious, so the whole game so far. Also, normally play peacenik, but decided to capture some of my opponents outright. I’ve only met 5 civilizations so far.

- Where did you settle your city?
on spot after checking sw with warrior.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
went for pottery and started with 6 turns to complete, Mining and foreign trade since I got the eureka...

- What was your build order?
scout builder holy site settler

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?
First holy site was finished turn 31 - I didn't go for Stonehenge and decided to get Religion "the old way"...
Pericles got Stonehenge, was the first (2120BC), I was 2nd (1640 BC).

- How did you place your districts?
placed HS in Kyoto next to city center, later Commercial hub next to HS, river and cattle, If I need to get there I'll go for Gr. Zimbabwe later... currently building Mahabodj.temple, Pedro got the Oracle but I didn't try for that...

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
No and I'm a bit surprised myself that I didn't. Since I'm focusing much more on religion and a certain victory type than in a normal game. London was just to close so I decided to get rid of her. Victoria had quite a decent number of units, took a bit, but went nicely of course.. took two cities from her. - Still with 4 cities on turn 100 all of them with HS... having about 60 faith per turn... running 100% HS adjacency bonus...

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
started with God King and faith porduction...
My Religion got Religious Communities helping with housing (another reason for late expansion this game and Mosques and now I added holy order and Tithe (+1G for 4 followers) with my first 2 apostles)
Will aim use one Apostle for inquisition next and the other for spreading (hopefully the Mahabodj.) guys...
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
lots and emphasized on religious ones, of course - just lost souzerainity of Yerevan to Pericles so I gotta take it back asap!

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Yep - Got denounced by Pericles and expect a DOW withing the next few turns...

- How were the Barbarians?
the first 2 scouts appeared on turn 5 so they were there early. They were never a threat to me except when wandering alone far away from home - lost a scout far north near Arabia which was a pity since there was a GH I couldn't get. Another scout is in trouble right now... No barbs near my borders, but annoyingly around the other civs like flies...

- Any surprises?
Went for pyramids. Don't know if that was a mistake, but I like it ;) I will have to finish Pericles off either via war or religiously and I should be good...

I tend to not focus to much on one Victory condition and find myself approaching the game too broad, I think... :)
Very interesting diversity in development in this thread...

Any suggestions are appreciated...

Spoiler turn 101 :

Honeyview_Civ6Screen0088.jpg

Hey guys just found out about this forum through Civ's facebook page!
I've been enjoying playing this GOTM atm, makes the game interesting!

I'm at my turn 254 and now I got stuck... crashing everytime I try to go to the next turn. Then I went read about it on the web and seems I'm unlucky with no fixes yet -.-'

Hope I can get back to playing GOTM yet : D

My second GoTM, I kept detailed notes this time. -

- Where did you settle your city?
I settled in place, I decided to go straight gor Astrology and Stonehedge (180p) on the desert , and couple that with a stone circles pantheon.

- What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Techs: my sequence along with the turn I got each tech and the rationale was:
Astrology T10 to grab Stonehedge> Mining T16 for quarries/chop > Bronze working 32 to see iron > Animal handling T35 > Pottery >Irrigation T44 to improve sugar > started Iron working and while waiting for the boost, filled in gaps with Archery T51 for Yerevan quest > Masonry T56, Writing T63 >wheel>Currency and then beeline to Military tactics and samurais.
Policies:
I went for Political Philosophy (change to Oligarchy for going to war with England) and Theology immediately after. I have targeted the Mahabodhi temple as a must get wonder.

- What was your build order?
scout > builder (stone, stone, chop) > Stonehedge.
Then settler > military (slinger/warrior/spear) > Holy site> Monument>settler> Encampement and sword/horseman

- How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?

I did not give priority to districts or improvements, Instead I decided to prioritize expansion and the early war.
I built the Holy site in Kyoto T57, then an encampment around T75, have started a commercial in my 2nd city, and caprured a holy and campus from England.

- How did you place your districts?
Holy site next to forest for Mahabodhi

- Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
Yes, very much so. I forward setled across the desert towards Pericles, once I found he is an amicable fellow (declared friendship around T35), I decided that I would fight the English and forward settled toward the Kilimantzaro site.
At T99 I have settled 5 cities and captured 2 more.

Spoiler T99 expansion :

Takasaki was founded by a captured English setter.
I got plenty of room to found new cities between existing ones.

- How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
After getting the pantheon wth God-King, i selected all the production bonuses according to what I was producing.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
Yerevan, Brussels, Stockholm in the first 40t. I got there first on all three, Yerevan and Brussels I try to keep mine. Later met Jerusalem and La Venta which will also be very important. (and easy to get now that Victoria is gone)

- Were your neighbors peaceful?
Poor things, they were. Pericles is a big friend.
Spoiler :
he will probably have his hands full at the inevitable Peloponnesian War with Gorgo

Victoria tried to expand towards me but I was more than ready because I had decided right from the beginning that i would need to defend my settling.
I chose to spend my first accumulation of 650faith to buy Sun Tzu. He allowed me to destroy the English in 11 turns with 4 units.

- How were the Barbarians?
Insignificant. I busted a camp in the SW early with a warrior attacking, resting and attacking again. Yerevan took care of some barbs too !!

- Any surprises?

Spoiler :

There are both Sparta and Athens in the game. That was a funny moment.

I am still not playong a very religious game, but I feel that i have set up nicely. I have designed the combo of +4 faith from wonders, Mosques and Mahabodhi. Once I built it (around T120) I thnk I will be pumping out some kung-fu bad-ass Budhist Apostles :crazyeye:
Spoiler Buddhism :

I have actually had one Religious victory already (as Egypt, on King), so I thought I would have better luck this time than I did on the Culture victory in GOTM2. I wanted to take advantage of Japan’s cheaper districts to get some Holy Sites up and running (passing on wonders). Compared to some of the earlier posts, I had a peaceful game, Liz massed some troops on my borders at one point but didn’t attack, and has been very friendly after I converted her cities. I’ve converted her and Brazil so far, waiting on Apostles to really go after the Greeks (Pericles has founded the only other religion so far).

Where did you settle your city?
In place

What did you research and which policies did you choose and why?
Science:
Mining/Pottery/Irrigation/Astronomy(Shrine)/Bronze/Animal/Archery, then Writing/Currency/Horse/Apprentice. After that I started aiming for Military Tactics for Samauri.
Culture: Push to Political Philosophy, then head toward Theology.
Code/Trade/Empire/Craft/Workforce/PolPhil then Mysticism/Drama/Games toward Feudalism.

What was your build order?
Scout/Builder/Sling, started a Settler while waiting for Astronomy then Holy Site (bought Shrine)/Trader/Settler/Sling then a couple more settlers and builders, alternating policies to boost. Once my other cities were up I switched back to development, with Granary/Commercial/Temple. Next two cities went Holy Site (with a chop), then granaries and a couple units, and a Theater in Tokyo.

How soon did you build a District? Which ones did you prioritize?

Holy Site in Kyoto completed on turn 31, 56 in Kyoto and 84 in Shizouka.

How did you place your districts?
I picked up the Desert faith pantheon, so I picked Holy Site spots to get an extra +3 faith from deserts. Deserts also seem like good tiles for districts rather than wasting decent farmland or mine spots. I have hexes identified for Commercial (on river bends), Industrial, and Theaters in all 3 core cities (maximizing adjacency bonuses), planning an Encampment in Tokyo and a harbor for Okayama.

Did you emphasize expansion? How many cities have you built/captured in the first 100 turns?
I wanted a strong base of core cities, I built 4, thought about 1 more to the south. Haven’t had any wars so no captured cities.

How did you play your governance cards, priorities?
GodKing to start the faith, then alternated the +30% Builder and +50% Setter cards to boost expansion. Just switched to Scripture when I got Theology a couple turns ago to boost Holy Site bonus.

What City-States did you meet and which ones did you cultivate to your side?
My scout met Yerevan on turn 11 (free Envoy), so that was great. :c5faith: I’ve met 10 CS so far, envoys are focused on getting to 3 with the religious ones, and I have 1 with a couple of the others from quests.

Were your neighbors peaceful?
So far, yes. Liz moved about 5 units near my border when I settled Okayama on the coast, but I converted her cities about the same time, and she became best friends. Pericles threatened me about settling too close (to the city he forward settled near me… :mischief: ), and he didn’t like me converting one of his cities, so he denounced me, but nothing more.

How were the Barbarians?
Not bad, busted a few camps nearby. Lost my scout in the far NE when he got surrounded (past Brazil).

Any surprises?
I was surprised that more religions haven’t been founded yet (probably due to Prince level), I expected Spain or some of the other prime religious civs (from reading these reports, seems like Saladin is out there yet).
Spoiler Religions :

Also surprised for a Pangea map that I haven’t met everyone yet. I’ve only met 4 civs so far (England, Brazil, and the two Greeks), I saw a message about France sending a delegation to England (so I assume she’s to the west) but no sign of any others yet.

I haven't finished yet so I post my question here: I wanted to use an Inquisitor on the Arabs but I can't. Any idea why?

I had to sign open borders for him to get to the city still he couldn't counter islam, not only in the holy city but in other cities as well... Not even if my religion was at least present (minority) in that city...
Never went for religious Victory before, maybe that's why I never ran into it...

You can only use an inquisitor's spread action (eliminate other religions in a city) if you control the city. Conquer the Arabian city and you can use the inquisitor, but as long as Arabia controls that city, no inquisition.
