Don't forget when they sign on they have no research so they only thing they can do is knock out signs and torches.
Somebody recommended the Hawaiian islands for the next game, and I liked that idea. It would include plenty of the new jungle biome, as well as volcanoes. Not sure when one will be available, though.

I think ogr made that suggestion.
I recommend not too much water. Last thing we need is heaps of islands and the need to sail about. We could introduce movecraft again in world 9 though, if we use a seed with a huge seas. Then, with fire charges, we can make frigates, galleons and ships of the line (civ 4 BTS)!!!But fire mode needs to be on, only for ships.

Sadly movecraft isn't maintained anymore. My dad was born in Hawaii so he has a fondness for itI like the style of landmass we have now, an isolated continent, but I do agree it is a bit big. I want to point out an issue with using existing real world terrain in that there isn't a lot of striking terrain. There will be a lot of flatness with little elevation changes and most mountains you wont notice. I've started playing around with some tools and if I do find something that works I will let you all know.
Spout server however will be ready at this time. It has a lot of features, such as cubic chunks allowing for infinite height that still workes with standard, unmodded, vanilla clients. My plan is to move to this when it is ready in a couple months. If we are midworld I will just port our existing world over.
What if we had one island? Right now, Whiterun and Athens are over 1 km away from each other, and I'd like to see some closer connections in the next server. Also, I'd like to see some vertical cities. Skyways, anyone?
I've thought about it and I can just flat out restrict clients to spoutcraft only, but when 1.2 comes it will be some time before it is updated. I also do want to try and be inclusive of other players who come in.
Another options is to run a "grey list" when anyone can log in, but only those approved by a mod can begin to play. What would probably help is if one of the major cities is at or near the spawn point to help keep an eye on things. It does bias recruitment to that city though. Each solution has its own problems.
I liked the distances, it makes for a realistic feel going from city to city, and even adds a gameplay element or two (i.e., when ogr and I delivered 20 stacks of wool (there wasn't enough space in my inventory to carry all of it in one trip), we could have hired a mob defense party during nightly travel had there been enough people on the server). There was that element of supply and demand and one city saying "I need X amount of resources from Y city. Will it arrive safely, and how will it arrive?". With rails, we could put the items in a chest and send the rail to Whiterun.
What I was thinking about was if we all spawned someplace like a forest and proceeded to build the town right there (with some sort of landmark marking spawn). Granted, that might be a little chaotic.
