"Civilization 4 has encountered a problem and needs to close" at startup

Hi there,

Since the game is not running fast enough on my laptop (with my 1.6 GHz centrino, 512 RAM, and 64 MB geforce I get only one frame every 2-3 seconds ), I tried to install Civ 4 on my desktop computer.

It is a 2.4 GHz celeron, with 512 MB RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9200SE.
Even though I installed the "fix" for ATI cards, I still cannot launch the game. Shortly after double clicking on the icon, I get a windows error "Civilization 4 has encountered an error and needs to close" (in french "Civilization 4 a rencontré une erreur et doit fermer").

Any idea ? I'm so sad not to be able to play this long-awaited sequel

I tried updating all my drivers and nothing changed

this problem is not because of drivers. That i know for sure.

Do you think it's more a hardware issue ?

I may have a chance to get a new graphic card this week-end. Maybe that'll do something.

Meanwhile I'm playing on my laptop... at 2-3 fps max after some tweaking (it seems that many users with gforce 5200 have the same bad perf)

Same problem on a brand new AMD 64 x2 @ 48000+ with 2 gb ddr400 ram and a Geforce 7800 pci-e video card. Game dies right after double clicking on it
