I couldn't find any discussion about the Civilization board game that is coming out soon. I think it was just demo'd at GenCon. Anyone have any news about this. I'm quite surprised I couldn't find anything about it here.
That's a link to an old issue. And the publisher sort of went out of business, but looks like some aspect of the old company survives. You can buy parts and assemble the boardgame yourself: http://www.eaglegames.net/SearchResults.asp?Search=civilization
I know nothing about it other than they are a well known British board game maker. It looks a lot less like Risk, and a lot more like a Puerto Rico style boardgame (like the Age of Empires boardgame made by Eagle Games).
Both companies are a bit heavy on plastic jewelry.
I have a FFG Red November which is definitely loaded up with pieces. I've heard the game just takes too long in general so I'll probably keep my Civ action on the PC (and occasional DS).
I have a hard time picturing FFG making euro-games, and from the looks of it(and the summary of the game in you link) It seems to mimic Twillight Imperium very much which ofcoarse also would make a lot of sense, since that is basically Galactic civilizations the boardgame anyway.
Looking at the board some more, it is a bit non-Puerto Rico in that there's a tile laying phase to determine the map, not just player sections that don't connect to each other, but the map is pretty smallish. I'd say they've put some euro-feel into it.
Yeah the board placement, and you mentioning Puerto Rico style gameplay, along with it being made by FFG, made me instantly think TI. - And in extension ameritrash it is afterall one of the prevailing features of many FFG games.
Note I am not bashing anything, I have played both TI, Descent and Doom which all prescribe to the oh-shiny mentality(not that is is a bad thing, I have had some very good times with TI) as wel as a lot of Arkham Horror, which is the least shiny of the FFG games I have played, although there still exists lots of dice and randomness.
The trouble with those big box games is the sheer time it takes to set up and play. And in many instances have we pulled out Arkham Horror even though we had agreed on playing TI. Which is very sad since I now have this huge game(and pretty expensive) sitting on my shelf doing nothin even though we all like it, but also know the time and commitment it takes. I fear this game is gonna be the same - very nice, lots of options, but way too much work and time to get going.
