I am wondering if anyone has ever played CivI for SNES when it was still around :). If you have, please post any comments and reviews on the game here :).

Yup, I did. It was the time when there were shops to lend console games, "try before buy".

As with all strategy games converted to consoles, the handling and movement of units by gamepad is a rather awkward experience. The game also ran very slow, as if run on a weak PC.
The intro was o-so-Japanese, with a goddess introducing you to the game, giving you the gifts of irrigation and so on, telling you it's your destiny to conquer the planet, yadda, yadda ...

The graphics were the worst of any Civ version I know. It was hard to recognize the units. And, right, you had to enter each city name; none pre-chosen.

Simply, I didn't buy it and stuck with my PC Civ.

Civ SNES was my first Civ experience, and I liked it. I played it on an emulator so I never had to deal with the aquard use of a joypad pecause I could sitch on the SNES mouse at will. :)
There are prenamed cities, you have to click the icon just to the left of the 'ok' it's an arrow the goes down and then does a u-Turn.

I always knew what my units were, never built navy, and only ever made 1 great military conquest when I invaded austrailia (populated by bronze age Babylon) With a transport full of armor. The rest of the Time I built a few cities (5-10) and played the defensive, developing land and building every wonder I could. I never went past warlord Dificulty and didn't achive a spaceship victory Untill about my 4th game. Ah sweet memories......

Just for fun, I tried to get the emulation version and played around for 3000 years. Here are some screenshots. The graphics are better than I remember, but the game handling and menu is still as irritating and awkward ... :mischief:

Encountering Abe Lincoln. My, was he young back then! :D

My first trip to the West. In white an American Legion and Chariot, below my Diplomat, and the "2"-city is the not so well developed city of Sparta

After "liberating" the Indians and the Mongols, life is much easier on my continent

My first wonder, the Pyramids, in the city screen :king:

Due to the slow performance of the game it takes looong to reach even 1000 B.C. Also, the menu screens are not as easy to read and obvious as in the PC version.
And, sigh, bigh sigh, no way to move around units by the numeral keys. Each step needs three clicks. My, this way the Romans never would have conquered half Europe ...

Still, quite some fun. If you get the chance to play it, take yourself some time!

I have "briefly" tried it. I selected the Japanese, since they are not in the pc version of civ. I don't remember what civ was missing because it's been a while :)
I don't know if the Japanese "pulled home" a little, because it was very easy game. (conquered whole world with catapults and triremes in very early years) I don't know if it was like this for all civilizations, because I only tried once. Also on a side note, I liked the way the game had Hawaii in the middle of pacific. Too bad the city I put there never evolved beyond 1 citizen, 'cause it is only one square island :)

I played this civ game first. Then I found Civ 1 for dos in a freebie bin at some electronics store.

I stayed up for 2 days straight playing that sucker (most of it was waiting :( )

I played civdos on my old OLD laptop. Now I miss it so. Civwin sucks compared to civdos :)

I have to disagree with both of those statements. I never had to choose my own city name. You either were doing something wrong, or we were playing 2 different Civ1's on the SNES. You just clicked one of the arrows and it selected the default name. I personally thought the graphics were much more lush and colorful than the other Civ games. The resolution may be lower - i'm not sure - but I much prefered the graphics in the SNES version to any other. This may be due to me playing the SNES version before the PC versions and you the opposite though. The unit graphics are different so I can understand having a different perspective based on which version you played first.

I don't remember it getting slow. I certainly remember Civ2 getting slow on the Playstation though. That game was 100% unbearable to play. 10 minutes between turns!!! Who would enjoy that?

The Earth map rules for sure. The Zulu's were replaced by the Japanese.
