Can be... The operative word being "can" there. The Internet is an international network, it is not America. Please remember that.

Is it just me, or has this thread gone waaay off topic? Christ it's like reading a thread on the EverQuest forums.

Well, for what it's worth, I can't recall blizzard ever posting what they plan to fix in their next patch until the day the patch is released. Firaxis have done better than most companies I think by telling us the details before the patch is even out there.

I agree however a known bug list would be nice. Even nicer would be whether they plan to fix them and a priority. I don't expect the second for business reasons (and AFAIK no game company does such a thing), and even the first is fairly rare to have such an organized official document.

The market reality is it doesn't pay to admit your game has bugs, so it's unlikely to happen. I think it sucks too, but you can't blame Firaxis for not wanting to lose face (relative to other companies) by looking like they have products out there with large numbers of bugs. Bugs in software seem to be like mistakes in politics - everyone knows they happen, but for some reason it's considered really bad form to admit it when it happens to you. Look at it this way - if someone hears Firaxis admit their game has some nasty bugs, they might not buy the game, even if the bugs are later patched. Where as by not saying so I seriously doubt you, as an existing customer, are going to refrain from buying any Firaxis games in the future that you would have otherwise bought. Or even if you will, you're in the extreame minority.

At the end of the day, I've played quite a few games since civ 3 was released, something that I wouldn't have been able to do if the game wasn't released until the patch date (I probably wouldn't see it in stores here in Australia until nearly xmas in that case). And I suspect that the game would be of a lower quality anyway - since getting it out there to the populace no doubt exposed more bugs than a few more weeks testing would have.

Even if they had waiting, you would have bought the game when it eventually came out anyway, so you haven't lost any money over it. And so long as they do come good on the patch (which I take as a given), and continue to patch any outstanding or future issues, I really can't fault Firaxis' behaviour. I think they're giving us the best possible game they can in the timeframe.

As far as industry standards go, I think games are generally released with more bugs now than they were 5 or so years ago. Most likely because they're significantly more complicated than they used to be, and hence there are bound to be more bugs both before QA (more code), and after QA (more stuff to test). Unfortunate fact of IT is if you're on the bleeding edge, sometimes you're going to cut yourself.

Anyway, I've said enough on this topic, basically I think Firaxis are doing what I think they have to do from a business perspective, which is a good thing because it keeps them in business for future games (maybe even civ 4 :p). Even though it would bug me if I was a Firaxis developer and I had to keep the fans in the dark. ;)

It's Friday now, no patch yet, still plenty of hours left in the day, I'm ok, I can be patient...

Personally, I would like to thank Firaxis for allowing the AI units to patrol mindlessly during the AI's turn ;). I like to think of it as them having a dance party and they're all doing The Hustle :D.

Any other suggestions for what type of dance steps the AI units know?

4. Allow Civs not able to use a resource, still Trade/Sell it to Civs that can use it.

That's not possible since they DON'T have it. New resources appear only after a civ discovers the related techs.

Didn't see anything concerning the Coastal Fortress city upgrade or SAM Missile city upgrade so I am to then assume that they are either fixed in the patch and not mentioned, missed or ???

The city governer builds privatiers which is mentioned but it also even after specifically asking NONE for units air, ground, water, exporer, etc will build defense units like spearmen in the beginning game (think has to do with happiness setting in governers?), jet fighters end game. Are these bugs addressed as well? Didn't see anything mentioned either.

There are many more questions I have but these two top the list and I want to see what the patch covers before posting more that may be already fixed :)

Great work though!

I cant wait for the patch, but what I want to know is what good is a Stealth Fighter??? The Prima guide, says it has all the abilities of a jet plus stealth... Thats BULL. No attack, no defence, and a bombard of 4. Almost as useless as a catapult.... Way to expensive for recon. Is this a glitch, or a Prima typo?

Well the game will now work as advertised so you complainers will just have to go find something not as worthwhile to complain about, because I can tell from some attitudes they wil never stop.

I can understand complaining before but the patch is gonna be out any day now.... why keep complaining about past issues? This post has turned into a big flame, the first few pages had actual usefull information and comments.

Personally I can't wait for the patch. But I will because I do have some self control.

No, Reo, it's just that strategy guides (especially Prima ones) are notorious for being wrong. Often they're written based on beta or even alpha versions of the game so that they can be published simultaneously with the game release.

Basically, never buy a strategy guide when you can wait a few weeks and then download a far superior one from any number of websites.

Thanks to Firaxis for the yet to be released patch and if you ever create an expansion pack for Civ III, I hope that you will seriously consider bringing the Vikings back into the fold.

"Those who ignore history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them."

Personally I can't wait for the patch. But I will because I do have some self control.

But not enough to prevent your expression of contempt for other's opinions. I still don't understand why people think everyone has to be completely content with a faulty product. I know, I know... you're thinking, "but they keep bringing it up!" I think if you/they stopped antagonizing the posters by stating your positive opinion of the game as a whole negates their facts (ie, air superiority broken, never tested, etc), the posters would probably let it rest. The game *is* good, just poorly tested, and not well supported verbally by the developers. Anyways, good luck with that self-control issue.

Ever bothered to read those "terms and conditions" for any Software? Export controls laws affect anyone using software developed in the states. They may not actually prosecute you (unless you live there), but they can (and do) blacklist you (or your company), which makes it illegal for any american individual or business to do business with you, and for you to enter an american territory. Technically, they could do this if you took / loaded MS Excel onto a computer in (for example) iraq, as MS Excel has encryption technology embedded.

Yes!

I have no problem with them complaining about legitimate bugs like air superiority I complained too. Obviously people take it a little too far though. I got ripped off and now they fixed it. I'm not gonna have a heart attack over it, as the problem is fixed now. Firaxis has learned their lesson no need to rub it in.

BTW the self control comment was sarcastic. I could wait several more months for the patch as long as they fixed the problems. Many of the people who were demanding a hurried patch were the same people complaining of a hurried game (so yes I too can learn from history and I wasn't gonna presure firaxis into making more mistakes).

But you did make good points ;)

Bah! Alfred trounced those pesky Vikings!

It's all about the Battle of Eddington with you Brits ins't? BTW, how did old Alfred fair out in the long run  Oi, I was going to pull the William the Bastard card but that would entail recognizing the Norman's existance...

From the suggestions I've read in this thread, I'm in love with:

1. Comprehensive trading screen.
2. Grouping troops to move them together.
3. Being able to go to the advisor screens from within city screens and when you're meeting with the other rulers.
4. Civilopedia links from the build list.

Some other suggestions:

1. When you lose a resource, how about telling WHY you lost it. Did it just dry up? Is the trade agreement over? Did you lose contact with it?
2. Unit ADM in the build list.
3. Better info on the other civs when you have an embassy/spy in place. You hear about when they start a wonder. How about when they quit working on one? How about telling which city they are building it in too? When they go to a mobilized economy, that should definitely be known.

Just my $.02. I love the game and was having an absolute blast with it without the patch. Should be even better now. Firaxis has a customer for life.

You can chat with your advisors while in diplomatic negotiations with foreign leaders. Click on the picture of your foreign advisor (not the box he's hiding behind, but the leader himself) in the upper right corner. This will open up the foreign advisor screen from which you can view other advisors' reports.

You can also access the civilopedia from the city screen to help determine what build orders you wish to implement. Right-clicking on certain areas of the city screen will open the civilopedia.
