Perhaps I've just been pressed for time, perhaps the whole work/life balance thing is out of synch, but I'm finding it really hard recently to get involved in anything that isn't just a quick and dirty standard Prince level game.

I love playing the sprawling Emperor games where there's an epic struggle to the top for my Civ, but in the past week or two, I keep reverting to the 4 hour Prince blitz that I know I can win regardless of what the game throws out.

I'm not bored with the game, I just don't seem to be able to engage for some reason. Even on the Prince games I'm getting to the point where it's clear I've won and finding it hard to trudge on to the finish line.

Civvers-block....is it a real condition? Does anyone else suffer from this? Is there a cure!?

Move up to Immortal/mods.

Alternatively, try to go into horribly lopsided (on you) situs in the many games you play. Make your civ pull a handicap move when you feel your winning too much, but just not there yet. Roleplay it out in your mind or something - you might be able to rationalize the AI's rather amusing actions into something a lot more tolerable and enjoyable!

Mods eh? Usually don't touch them, but as I clearly need some spice to liven me up why not! :)

Hmm....might try and find a good future tech mod. I've always been dissapointed that Civ proper hasn't taken this aspect of CtA and made it work.

I've played on Immortal, but to be perfectly honest I find that Immortal and Deity are the wrong type of challenging for me. I can play them if I put my mind to it, but I find that I don't enjoy the experience as it's more like work than work, Emperor is usually my comfort zone as I find it to be a good balance of challenge and fun.

I think I'm probably just tired and the old brain isn't feeling particularly strategic. It's just annoying as I really want to get my teeth into a game, but I keep sniffing them instead! (apologies for the icky analogy )

Yeah, high levels are just... absurdly mechanic would be the words to describe them, I suppose. I find I can still rush an early civ and obliterate it on Emperor, but one time I tried that on duel Immortal and it was just horrible (met a good mid-sized army of archers, horsemen, chariots, spears, warriors etc. before turn 100).

For future tech mods, there's not really much. The Call to Power one hasn't been updated for months, which is a pity because there really should be more CtP-influenced futurisms in civ5. Even though its in extreme need of polish, Beyond the Future adds some nice buildings and units, advanced mech inf which totally makes the GDR irrelevant, railgun destroyers that are basically destroyers with serious range/logistics upgrades, UAVs that are endlessly reusable guided missiles etc. Had quite a bit of fun with it, but like the CtP mod it hasn't been touched for quite a while.

P.S. I think Paratroopers would transition nicely into a Future Era-esque Mobile Infantry (Powered Armor) unit. They already have the "on the bounce" ability, with their ability to paradrop 5 tiles away, now all they need is a buff to mechinf levels of damage, defense, the ability to attack after a drop and a cost of 1 aluminium.

That's pretty common when you are ready to move up in difficulty levels. If it's not a challenge it's less fun. Try playing on emperor without choosing a perfect civ/map combination...just go random civ/random map type. For me the experience of adapting to unexpected, non-ideal conditions and coming out on top is the most fun I can have.

I kinda disagree about immortal difficulty, that's where I play my random/random games and don't find it forces me into a single strategy or anything like that. Deity is ridiculous...but immortal generally gives me enough breathing room to experiment a bit.
