CivWin and Civ I DOS differences

Just got the Chronicles of Civ boxed set and am looking at the Civ for Windows game. Now, I'm used to Civ DOS, and thought this would be the same. The interface looks different, but I think I have found one difference in game play. The CivWin version of the DOS game, apart from (slightly) improved graphics, has one feature which is retrograde from the patched version of DOS - you can't (I think) rename cities.

There is also one significant game play change - I can't find any way of hurrying up the building of a city improvement. The DOS version had a "Buy" button in the Build box in the City screen. I believe that later versions you can hurry up the building by using Control-H, but WinCiv doesn't have a Buy button, and Control-H doesn't do anything.

Does anyone have a list of other changes?

(Or have I missed a way to hurry building in CivWin?)

It's been a while since I have played on a DOS version of Civ4. I am still figuring out how to get my MWware Workstation (It's a virtualization program) install MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1. I'm not sure if Civ1 for DOS can run on Windows 3.1.

With the DOS version of Civ, I have a DOS boot disk, and a computer which is happy booting into DOS. The game itself is installed on the hard disk, but I boot from floppy.

With WinCiv (or at any rate with the version that comes in the complete Civ which I have just bought) you can install the game and play it under Win XP, though you may need to reduce the screen down to a max of 800x600. This is NOT the DOS version running under Windows, but a distinct version of Civ 1 which was re-vamped to run in Windows. It was designed for Win 3.1 (I think), but - as I say - it can run in XP with no special provisions.

What can be a little trickier is running the DOS version inside Windows XP - this requires a .pif file, and a special trick on start up, but it can be done.

Renaming Cities:
- While in the City Window, go to City on the menu and click on Rename or just press "r"
Buying Units(Rushing them)
- While in the City Window, go to City on the menu and click on Buy or just press "b"

Thanks a lot :D

Those two were really bugging me. I've a tendency to hit the wrong keys when naming cities, and I hated not being able to put that right, and I've developed several strategies which rely on being able to switch production to a military unit and buy it at the last minute when necessary.

I should have checked out the City menu, of course instead of just piling in assuming I knew what was going on.

Thanks again!

In general, I perfer the feel from both the DOS and the SNES Civ1s. Though I dont like the limited civ choices in Civ1 for DOS.

Are there limited civ choices in Civ1 for DOS? I know that in the SNES version the Zulu are replaced by the Japanese (which I fully agree with), but just like in the windows version you can customize civs (with other words: rename civs). So I don't see the limitation.
