On April the 1st 1573, during the 80-year Dutch Independence (against the Spanish), the Spanish lost the city of Brielle (Den Briel) to the Dutch revolutionists. The commander of the Spanish troops was called Alva. We still say: Op 1 April verloor Alva zijn bril.
(it used to be: Op eenen Aprille verloor Alva Brielle). The first sentence means: On April the 1st, Alva lost his glasses (because he was so surprised the Dutch could do that).
We are going to play the Germans.
