Cold War Project

Answer:
Conterversial, but oh well.

Absolutley none

A) Would ruin a game as the crazy AI/crazy human starts a nuke war.

B) Totally unrealistic, no-one in their right mind would have used nukes against another superpower in the cold war. Sure they came clos in Cuba, but not even Kruschev was insane enough to use nukes, they were placed in Cuba purely for barganing purposes.

C) It would be a waste of 1 or 2 unit spots.

Perhaps a limited number of SRBMs, and make them unbuildable. But mordheim is right, the AI would go crazy with them....

OR

You could instead of giving them 99 attack give them, say 90 but put them in a slot where they'll attack anything.

Of course, in the latter you should make them buildable.

Whoa! I dont post in this thread for more than a day and already its on its third page. To answer your question from page 1, SEATO is the South East Asia Treaty Organization. It was NATO's, North Atalntic Treaty Organization, sister organization of countries in South East Asia. It's primary job was to stop the spread of Communism into South East Asia after World War 2 ended and the Japanese Empire no longer existed. The difference between it and NATO was that members of SEATO wer not responsible for helping out their fellow members, so the organization failed in its job after the Korean War and Veitnam War, when Communism began to spread through South East Asia. It disbanded in 1978. It's original members were the US, Canada, the Philippines, Australia, France, Pakistan, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Thailand.

As for using this as a civilization, it could work or you could combine SEATO and NATO together into one civ. SEATO's headquarters were in Bangkok, Thailand and NATO's are in Brussels, Belgium. I'll look for more info in terms of military might. You can e-mail me at emugod4ever@yahoo.com

Maybe if you set the nuclear movement to zero, set all of them to home city "none" (so citizens are angry) and make them unbuildable, and give them to the United States, the Soviet Union, and China. It'll prevent the missiles from actually being used, but still have the same kind of diplomatic influences.

Of course, this would all depend on if academia wants the nukes to be usable or not.

Though in either case the nukes should stay in the same slot because only units in the nuclear missle slot make the dip. influences.

One more time, thanx for your help!! :goodjob:

Mordheim:
I don´t agree with you. Not having them in the scenario would be totally unrealistic!!! When you think on the Cold War, the first thing that comes to your mind is "menace of a nuclear war"
As I said before, i don´t want to make a realistic scenario; I won´t respect exact dates or conflicts. It´s a "what if" scenario.
As it happened in real life, USA and USSR players will have to talk, negotiate and sign some "non-proliferation treaties" or you can start a nuke war. No restrictions.
Sorry, but I´m not going to change it.
NUCLEAR MISSILES ALLOWED

Perhaps a limited number of SRBMs, and make them unbuildable. But mordheim is right, the AI would go crazy with them....
The AI? This will be a MULTIPLAYER GAME ONLY!!! Human players will decide. AI won´t have access to nuclear power ;)

Emugod:
THANX!!!! Great link!!! :goodjob: very useful :D
You know, i´m not sure about a combination of SEATO and NATO

I have a problem here, i can´t make a decision...

Some ideas, i´d like to hear your opinions...

1) Space Race
Would you like to see it? I can add some techs and "redesign" the civ2 classic Alpha Centauri Space Race to a new Moon Race.

2) Techs
As I said before, i´m going to include multiple files (events, rules and units) Mmm... what about techs? I said that this would be a "what if" scenario. However, i´d like to respect techs/units timelines. I mean, i don´t want to see B-2 bombers in 1960.
Do you want me to give the techs trough the use of events? or just use the traditional science research system?

3) Vietnam
My scenario will begin in 1964-1965. Give me your ideas about this topic. Anything!!!

4) Revolutions/Wars in Africa/Latin America/ Middle East
Should I add some events to recreate them? Or just "forget" them?
USA and USSR were involved in many wars, outside their territories... One more time, this is a "What IF" scenario...

Seventh and Eighth Tribes
I decided to include a modified SEATO.
Original Members:
1) USA (it already occupies one tribe slot)
2) Canada (inside the NATO)
3) Phillipines
4) Australia
5) France (NATO)
6) Pakistan
7) UK (NATO)
8) New Zealand
9) Thailand

My SEATO
1) Phillipines
2) Australia
3) New Zealand
4) Thailand
5) Addition of Indonesia
6) Japan?
7) India?

What do you think about 6) and 7)? Inside SEATO or not? Japan inside US tribe?

SEATO sucked - all the member states hated each other, and only (reluctantly) co-operated against communism. For example, when signing the treaty, Australia told Pakistan that it had no intention whatsoever of coming to Pakistan's aid in the event of an Indian attack on Pakistan.

But it's an OK compramise for a civ scenario ;)

personally I think the slot would be better spent on a Commonwealth Civ.It would work better in my opinion.

Just remember to make Thailand SEATO's capital, if you want historical accuracy. As for events, make the Six Day War between Israel against Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq (I'm missing one Arab country) as an event. It took place in June 1967 and Israel managed to capture the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt and the Golan Heights from Syria. It was a major blow to the Soviets, because they supplised the Arabs with their weaopns, such as MiG fighters, who were easily crushed by the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces). The Israelis wiped out the airforces of all the Arab armies in a day. This event could also unlock some sort of new Soviet plane because nwo the Soviets need to upgrade their weapons so they can surpass Western Weapons.

As for Civs, here's a possible list that I think might work:
1) NATO (Includes USA)
2) SEATO
3) Warsaw Pact (Includes USSR)
4) China
5) Pro-Captialist Countries (Spain, Israel etc.)
6) Pro-Communist Countries (North Korea, North Vietnam, Cambodia etc.)
7) Arab League
8) Neutrals (barbarians)

You could forgo the Arab League and make the US a separate civ. I hope this helps. Maybe you could play around with it a bit and see what you like.

Case and Insane Badger:
Really, i need to make a decision!!! SEATO or Commonwealth? This time, take into account playability in a civ2 game, no historical accuracy.

Emugod:
Sorry, but I don´t like your list. I´ll use the one i gave you in Page 2.

1) USA /Israel/South Korea/Taiwan/Panama/ Phillipines? / Japan?
2) USSR /Warsaw Pact/Cuba/Yugoslavia
3) China /North Korea/North Vietnam
4) NATO / Japan?
5) Arab League /Iran
6) Latin America
7) SEATO or Commonwealth
8) UN

In the case of a "Commonwealth Tribe" Do you want me to include UK inside it? or inside NATO?

I don't think there should be a Commonwealth. All the major countries in Commonwealth could be grouped into other alliances, like NATO and SEATO.

The Commonwealth should definetly not be included as a Civ. The Commonwealth is by no means a unitifed political, military or economic entity. SEATO is a much better choice.

What about the neutral countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Sweden etc. that were never part of any of the alliances?

Here's how I'd structure it:

(1.) United States
(2.) Western Europe
(3.) Warsaw Pact
(4.) Pro-U.S.
(5.) Pro-Soviet
(6.) China P.R.C.
(7.) Neutral (inc. India)
(8.) Terrorist (Barbarian)

Terrorist for barbarians to represent non-aligned terrorist states. Syria, Libya, etc. - Warsaw Pact and Pro-Soviet countries should have unbreakable alliances with these nations to represent the kind of diplomatic relations countries like Libya had towards the Soviet Union, Cuba, etc.

Why not have Warsaw Pact and Pro-Soviet countries all be one civ? After all there were few "Pro-Soviet" nations outside of Warsaw Pact, that is if you would think that North Korea and Vietnam would be put under Chinese and not Soviet influence.

BTW what's with this UN name for the barbs?
