A civ with pyramids grows much faster, that's all. Even if US or USSR agriculture was great, so were population growth control measures (true even moreso of Europe). It might make sense to give it in the US to represent massive immigration (which began towards the end of the cold war), otherwise I would give it to whatever civ ended up representing most third world countries, due to the dramatic population explosion (India? China even with it's attempts to control growth? Indonesia?)
