Why not? There WILL be a MAC version of Civ3.

Can you just imagine if you find a really important resource in the early game a long way from your border, but near someone else's. The temptation would be to slap a colony on it and build a long road to connect to it, and then there could be a big long running fight over that square as the other Civ tries to grab what might be his nearest or only example of that resource. It could become a more realistic version of the Ai's known predilection for getting obsessed with attacking one fortified unit near its borders rather than assaulting your lands.

Sounds like these colonies are going to be really interesting, and pose quite a strategic challenge.

And thanks to Dan for taking the time to answer our questions.

One point that's just occured to me. If resources can be exhausted, is there going to be a maximum extraction rate? E.g. if ten cities are all using the same iron square to build legions, will each one take longer to do so than if it was the only one using that square?

Oh, and one last thing I'm not quite clear on (being a bear of very little brain

). What effect does losing a city have on your borders - presumably they shrink, but is it only in the area the city was in or across the whole Empire? And does it reduce your culture score?

I agree, colonies are going to be important strategically, but the AI needs to be able to realize this, but not send every unit it has against it, if they were smart, they'd just destroy the road, then wait and lurk in "ambush" mode by the side of the road for one of your units to come back and rebuild it and then BOOM, of course you'd probobly want to build a different road route for that specific reason.
I don't think there should be a "maximum extraction rate", that would be a little too much micromanagement.
