I hope those 3 words in the title mean the same thing on the game. Ive been reading the forum a lot and got somewhat confused how to do this.

Ive got 4 cities on a remote island. I want to give them independence so they become another country. Which means they become my Vassal through their independece ?

Where is the option to allow them independence? I cant seem to find it anywhere and it doesnt give directions in the manual.

Press <F1> and click the 'revolt fist' symbol in the bottom right corner. It'll tell you what options you have for gifting cities and granting independence.

Just did this for the first time in my last game. I had to do a little digging in the ol'Civilopedia, but when I figured it out and clicked the button in the domestic advisor screen, it gave me an option of creating a colony with the 4 cities on one island (that I had taken from the Khmer) or the 2 on another island that I had settled myself. Pretty cool deal as it freed up some of my units to rejoin the assault on the Greeks that was in progress! Though, when I later took another city (Khmer, taken by Greece) I got a pop up box asking if I wanted to keep it, burn it, or give it to my vassel/colony. Since it was on my continent, I kept it, but it was something new in the game (for me), which I always enjoy.

Yes, it's pretty poor explanation, and a shame people has to go to the forums to get it explained. But since it's here, I wonder again - what happens when you break of a city as a colony? Is it treated like a vassal state. Do you keep the culture?

When I press F1 it brings up a screen on the top right which has a list of options such as 'exit to desktop', 'save game', 'enter worldbuilder', etc.
Is that where the 'revolt first' symbol is (mentioned in the above post)? I didn't notice it there before, but I'll check again. Or am I looking in the wrong place? Anyone have a screenshot of it?
Or was I supposed to be in the city screen and not the world overview screen?

Can you get any of your cities to gain independence or are there certain prerequisits needed or only a certain number of cities that can break free?

When a city can be granted independence or given to another civ, a red fist shows at the end of its row in the Domestic Adviser screen: this will be either because its citizens "rightfully" (and oh so annoyingly) want to join another civ or because it is on another landmass. In the latter case, granting independence makes it a colony of yours - a new civ appears, instantly becoming your vassal and getting all your techs plus its own defenders.
To grant independence, press ALT + F1. A list appears from which you can, usually, select the cities you wish to give away. This can be tricky; I had a bunch of cities conquered on another continent, some of which had been previously captured from one of my vassals, others taken from an adversary, and although I clicked on the latter group (to be added to another colony/vassal) that is where the whole bunch went: it had been my intention to give the others back to their original owner. Fortunately this did not affect those cities of mine on "my" continent which had made "rightful" demands. No way do I ever want to hand over cities which I have developed to a far less advanced vassal who doesn't have the resources to keep them healthy and happy, nor indeed the techs required to allow some of the buildings there.

I did try to press ALT + F1 but I was in the world view of the map, when I tried it. The mouse cursor thing jumped and got stuck up in the top left hand corner of the screen & civ minimized and I was sent to my desktop. The only way I could get it out of there was by hitting ALT+F2. Then I could move the mouse like normal again. So I clicked on the civ button down on the task bar and my civ game maximized on the screen. There was an option that did apear that read something like "revolt...." There was no list of cities though and I could only chose one option which exited me out of the option screen. In my current game, I do have some cities that I've taken by force and atleast one city on another continent. It was very wierd that the mouse got stuck and I couldn't move it. I started to get nervous, like I had messed up my computer. Thankfully, pressing the ALT+F2 got me out of it. Anyone else run into this problem?

I'll try doing this on the domestic advisor screen next time I play to see if it works.

Thanks for the good replies guys :) - I guess the reason I haven't seen so much of it is since I'm been playing on Pangea maps.

OK. It works for me now. I didn't have multiple cities on the other continents, so I wasn't getting that 'fist' icon. I still can't use the shortcut ALT+F1, but if I go into the domestic advisor screen using the icon, it works. thanks for the help guys.
