I've been playing FfH for a few weeks now, and I've twice after I've conquered a civilisation on a separate continent turned those cities into a colony to avoid the upkeep costs.

The first time I ended up with a Svartalfar colony to my Ljosalfar civilisation (that seemed almost appropriate somehow). The second Doviello to my Khazad. In both cases I ended up with a vassal state that had a different alignment to mine and therefore didn't like me.

Is the choice of civ chosen as the colony totally random, because if your breaking off part of your civilsation that they had some similarity of alignment and religion.

I really think colony maintinence should be taken out for FFH. It is just not flavorful and ends up being a chore.

It's not totally random. There's a derative civ in the XML files which is prefered (no civ in FfH2 has a derative civ). Also you won't end up with colonies of civs already in the game. Finally you won't end up with colonies of civs that are unplayable by humans or AI (so no infernals as a colony). Other than those restrictions it's random, yes.

What does determine whether yu can release a city as a colony or not? I settled a small island very close to my mainland and could release those cities as colonies, and I settled I chain of Islands really really far away, mostly for their resources, and was planning to release them as a colony, however I couldn't. Where is the logic that determines what can be a colony and what can't?

You need a minimum of two cities on the continent and you can't have your capital on it. You also can't create colonies if all the player slots (35) are occupied. Finally, if all the different playable civilizations (or leaders) are already in the game then you can't do it. This becomes a bit more complicated with random personalities on.

Colonies are rather broken... 3 free mana at no maintenance cost, yes please.. Just as broken as vassal states..

What's broken about vassal states?

I think the extra distace maintainance should be removed from FFH and for colonies to be removed, I never really liked them that much in vanilla bts and I hate them in FFH. They just don't seem to fit.

You can reduce a civ to 1 city then vassalize them and demand their palace mana without costing you anything basically giving you access to one more palace..

Suppose. I'm not sure if mana should be tradeable actually, I mean, how do you physically give someone mana? I think vassal states would be fine otherwise. I like playing bannor and making evil civs into tiny satelite states, after i force order on them of course :p..
