How do you build colonies?

I have seen a lot of them. I destroyed one and was able to build mine on top (ctrl-b).

But, if I see an interesting spot, how do I build one by myself?

Right, but is there special places to build colonies?
Can't I build a colony wherever I want?

You build colonies to use resources that are in undeveloped areas of the map (not inside the cultural borders of any civ). The colony must be connected to your trade network by a road in order to function.

The key thing is that it must be a RESOURCE square, ie. Strategic Resource or Luxury Resource. You cannot build colonies on any other squares.

Why bother about colonies? A city brings the same benefit + a cultural border which a colony doesn't. If the AI builds a city 1 tile from your colony 10cp will absorb your colony!

On the attached picture:

I can build a colony on the green square, north of the persian colony.

I cannot build one on the gold, south of the colony.

Why?

Ugg!
That "green square" is just a fortress that happens to be on a square with the strategic resource Saltpeter, while the gold is simply a bonus resource that only adds to whay you gain from working that square with a city. Do you even understand how resources work in the game?
REad the game manual through and then you will understand the game in a basic way...

My thought exactly. Modern Fort, Modern Armor and still uncolonized territory?

Must have started a huge map with 3 civs.

Maybe he just razed all the cities around it? I'm wondering why the workers are building roads to nowhere...

And all those workers are happily working with no protection apart from one single MA? And they are not stacked so these workers are all put to work manually?
