How are the combat odds calculated?

I always thought that a unit with 2strength versus a unit with 4strength would've had a 25% chance of victory, but instead they 0.9% chance of winning... wtf?

combat is a round based battle, reducing the two combatants hitpoints every round, based on the unit's strength. i believe each unit has 100 hitpoints, but lets make it 10 for the sake of easiness.

Code:
round	4str hp	2 str hp
0	10	10
1	8	6
2	6	4
3	4	(-2)

so basically the 4 strength unit would have killed the 2 strength unit in round 3. if it attacked it would have been before it self takes damage. this is with no unit missing, but this can happen. so the 4 str unit just needs 3 hits, the 2 str unit at least 6 hits to kill the other unit. that's why the odds are so insanely low.

basically, a gifht consists of rounds and is ended by the death of one of the fighter. Each fighter begin with 100 life (unless it has already been damaged). On each round, one of the fighter inflicts damage to its opponent depending on the difference between the forces: at 4 against 2, the 4 force guy has 66,6% of chances of hitting (4/(4+2)), and the 2 force guy, well, 33,3%.

After this, damages are also calculated depending of the strength difference. With a base of 20 damages if forces are equal, this number goes up if the fighter inflicting damages has a better power than the other one, and on the opposite for the other fighter.

So with 4 against 2, the 2 power fighter should win odds with 33% of hitting to inflict lot's of times less than 20 damages to win, against his opponent whose odds are 66% to inflict more than 20 damages each time. This explains why.

Basically obv ;)

Regardless of the stated odds, lurking somewhere is a "fudge factor" giving the following effects :-
1. If it is utterly essential that you, the human player, win a battle, you will lose.
2. Far more often than the laws of chance suggest, a much weaker defender will land a string of five or more successive hits on your unit, and thus kill it. This is particularly the case if your unit is led by a Warlord.

An optimist is a pessimist with no experience, remember !
