Commander TIps

I agree that the top of the Assault tree is crazy powerful and should be the default first choice for the first couple Commanders. I do like Leadership as an option for later Commanders, especially if you have +1 free promotion somehow. Building a Commander for ageless yield buffs and increased troop carryover is a very nice use of late-era hammers.

I think the remainder of the Assault tree isn't all that exciting, and it's an interesting decision whether to continue straight down Assault for the fastest possible Commendation or to go into a different tree after Initiative. Logistics in particular has a very nice mix of combat and infrastructure buffs. At the moment "open Assault, then go down Logistics" is my default path for my first Commander.

Assault finisher is great for some Civs like Ming and Mongols. Their UU can ranged attack and get the benefit of first strike.

While people have mentioned that you can use your commander to backup unit there is another use of a similar technique I feel very overpowered from the deploy promotion. It is that it can act as if you had 3 movements on all your units AND ignore the terrain.
Example with
[Melee Unit][Commander][River][Enemy]
In a normal scenario the unit would not be able to attack the enemy, but you pack it into the commander and then redeploy on the river you will be able to.

Has anyone figured out why deploy with initiative sometimes doesn't work (units coming out without movement)? I thought it might be vegetated/rough/river tile placement, but that doesn't hold up because I've deployed on those tiles and not had issues.

Hmmm, don't think I've noticed that. It even avoids zone of control from what I've seen.

I've had issues with the melee attack command though, sometimes it uses the movement points and nothing happens. The ranged one has been reliable

I have seen this once, pretty annoying. I had a commander in the hex NE of a city I was attacking. I unpacked a chariot that had been packed for a couple turns to the hex E of city so I could attack a unit south of there. I had the initiative promotion (why would you pick anything else first‽) but the chariot unpacked with 0/3 movement. Both commander and chariot were on flat, non vegetated, non rough terrain, both directly beside the enemy city.
