Thunderstorm knocked out the power at this point, but all I had done from the Start of the Turn save (right after all the city builds were done) was move units to the capital to see what forces I had. We get our units back around 001 Dune and take a look around.

First, we want to build Space Ship Parts. We don't need to be any smarter, so science goes to 0% and +1393 gpt. We learn Stealth in 7 at 0%.

And while many cities are unproductive this turn, we only need ten cities in good order to build our space ship. With 279 cities, I think we can find 10 that are not rioting.


Second, we don't want any cities to riot. Check F2. We are importing nothing, not one, nada, luxuries. All our happiness is homegrown. though only six of the eight luxuries.

Portugal's DoW ends those MAs on England, France and Celts. Arabs are open to peace also.

We still MAs active versus the Dutch with India, Iroqouis, Hittites and Spain.

We make peace with Arabia for WM and 66 of 66 gold.

Then we kill any trespassing French or Celts units while trying to grow leaders. We win all the battles but no MGLs.

We make peace with France for WM and 53 of 53 gold. We could claim two cities, Fez and Aden, but both are small, far away and hard to defend. Gold will do just fine.

We make peace with the Celts for WM and 6 of 6 gold.

We make peace with England for WM. England is broke.

We are now at war with only Netherlands and Portugal.

That's funny. I think it best to think of spaceship parts as "small wonders" (who says wonders are useless?). You *can* rush them with MGLs or SGLs, but that's about it. No unit rushing them, no forest chopping shields in, no buying them. In my experience (once you realize that), it's much more of a problem to get the techs, than to actually build the parts (unless playing an OCC space game). I once deliberately tried to get the AIs to research as much modern techs as they could for me, and ending up building all 10 parts in I think 11 turns, as it looks like you've done here.
 
Great write up as usual, Bob. I really like the style of your games, makes me miss when I used to always play to have the biggest nicest nation and just win and not worry about dates.
 
Seriously Marsden. I mean, when playing for the HoF there usually seems little reason to play a 60% pangea warmongering game or to play continents or play a 70% map of some sort. I guess some exceptions may exist, but not many.

This might be true for you and - even if I am hesitating to say that - for myself I have the same feeling than you, but if it is this what makes CommandoBob, or anybody alse happy, it's cool of course :thumbsup:
 
I agree Calis. I just meant that if you say play a 60% pangea map vs. max opponents for a histographic game you've played a game where you probably could have had a higher score under other conditions.... and such. But, if you find it more fun to play on maps that don't optimize finish date/score do it anyways!
 
I do enjoy the Huge Pangea maps at Monarch. The biggest reason I've stuck with those settings is because those tables are empty. Which means even a badly played game, like my Indian Conquest, can land up with a spot in the HOF.

I've gone with max opponents and random civs just to prove that it doesn't matter what the civ is, it matters who is playing that civ. Any civ can win in any VC, but too often the players get stuck in a rut playing their favorites. Gotta be Rome, never be Maya, avoid all COMs; that sort of foolishness.

On this one I thought I could just waltz into a third place, given the gap between Tone's two games and Karl_t_great's game. I learned my last Spaceship tech a few turns into the 1600s, so maybe I could have if I had pushed harder. From early on I thought I could rush the various parts, so accumulating cash was part of the plan. Now I know better.

The next game will be UN and that table still has some empty slots. The 20K culture will be the tough one, since that table at Monarch Huge is already full.

I still haven't decided if I will redo any of these at the HOF minimums and try to beat my score.
 
Not a bad effort at all. I would say that using ICBMs as pre-builds for the SS parts gets the fastest launch time, but then I have done multiple Space victories. Other pre-builds can be the Palace in your FP city and Armies in your MA city. Bravo for a nice win, CBob!

And the science fiction titles brought back memories of many afternoons reading pleasure. Would it shock anyone that I've read about half the books listed?
 
Manfacturing plants can also help as pre-builds on some spaceship parts if you go to Robotics early.
 
Buried in my Hof thread is the fact that I always used to play random civs and really didn't have a strong plan in mind but merely played. Then I started with the Hof and found that having a sci trait and doing the age gifting and so on and so forth tried and true methods to get the date down and so on, it's a completely different style of play to go for the fastest finish and I miss it at times, but after so many games into the HoF I'm stuck in the patern. I remember one particular game I was chugging along and I accdentally hit the domination limit, I was severly disappointed because I thought I still had another 100+ turns coming! Ah, those were the days. Worry not, friends, I still am trying the fastest finishes, I just haven't had any successes lately.

Somehow, in what is surely one of the most detailed turnlogs ever posted for a HoF game, it is this detail that blows my mind.
 
Gibson's Neuromancer (city number 6 or 7) is what started the whole cyberpunk thing - very Blade Runner.
 
The Start:

For this game, with the goal of building the United Nations, I will be using nation capitals for city names, courtesy of the WikiPedia World Capitals.

Only seven entries in the HOF for this game setting. I don't see anyway to get to the UN before 1000 AD, so the best I plan to hope for is becoming the new 5th place winner. And even then, getting the UN built by 1400 won't be that easy.

Then I started the game and drew.....

...a horrible starting location, a real wooly-booger. We stand on grass, but have 2 hills and 4 mountains in the inital 9 city tiles. Two BGs and a river are visible, so we'll be moving. Even after moving the scout, as shown above, things look grim.

One of my own preconditions is to take the first generated starting location, so there is no-rerolling for somehthing better. The challenge is to make this start work.

On the bright side, Russia is a popular civ for this kind of victory, being SCI and EXP. EXp will help with early tech trading and SCI will help us get smarter faster. And the three free techs don't hurt either.

Russia's UU is the Cossack, a Cavalry upgrade. It has the same A/D/M as Cavalry, but can attack multiple times in one turn. Cossacks cost 90, Cavalry cost 80. Ten more shields for more attacks per turn? Cheap.

We hope to meet other SCI civs, that would help us, but with all Random AIs, well, who knows who will be around to join in the fun? We'll need to keep the SCI civs alive all through the game, so we may have to beat up on the bothersome. :D


We start playing and move a bit and in 3900 BC we build the capital city of 001 CommondoBob-grad. I just like the way the name rolled of my tongue; it sounded so pretentious and overblown.

We build two warriors to explore and then start a granary. In 3550 BC a friendly tribe tells us about Dyes, but the Dyes are surronded by 4 jungle tiles. In 3400 BC we find 4 Wines eight tiles away in the northwest and ocean to the east. The Wines are not too far, but still rather distant, given the terrian involved. In 3150 BC we have some bad news; Zulu are nearby. That is followed in 3100 BC by popping a settler from a goody hut. And our scout finds an ocean due south of his previous coastal location, after walking through 8 tiles of jungle. In 2800 BC our popped settler builds L01 Red, Red Wine. We meet the Hittites in 2590 BC. 002 Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is founded in 2430 BC.

Now the start looks even worse. Only one direction to expand and that is westward. Jungles to the east and south-east, mountains to the south and desert and mountains to the north. The Dyes 4E-1SE of 001 CommandoBob-grad are tempting, but will require too much effort to acquire. One settler is not too expensive, but roading three jungle tiles will take aboout 30 turns. With only three cities and the Zulu nearby, this is not the right time for that much effort. Once we get our core built up and have some more workers (or buy some) we can try to claim the Dyes.

In 2190 BC we discover Iron, but it is outside our borders and next to a volcano.

We bump into the Iroquois in 2030 BC. Another agrresive civ with an Ancient Age UU is our next door neighbor. Impis and Mounted Warriors, both fast-movers and close by. And we still have three cities.

In 1910 BC Wines are connected to 001 CommandoBob-grad ([party]) and 003 Yaoundé (Cameroon) is built in 1750 BC. Sumeria is due north of us, as we find out in 1625 BC. We sell them used techs and take all their gold, all 25 pieces of it. 004 Wellington (New Zealand) is founded in 1475 BC and in that IBT Iron is connected, which means Swords, and we learn Writing (Embassies). The Maygar teach us Horseback Riding and then our Iron supply is cut by an erupting volcano. We meet Japan in 1175 BC. We bankrupt Sumer, Iroquois and Japan with Horseback Riding.

We begin to clear the volocanic pollution to have Iron again, starting in 1100 BC. Horses are connected to 001 CommandoBob-grad that same year (they were only three tiles away). A few turns leater we meet France.

While we have met our neighbors, none are very close, which is good news. However, we have a lot of harsh terrain to expand into and it looks like our core is going to be rather confined.

In 950 BC we build embassies we our six friends, and then meet Korea two turns later. America stumbles to meet us in 750 BC and in 730 BC Iron is reconnected. Shortly after that the Iberian tribe takes pity on us and teaches us about Currency. In 590 BC we start to learn Republic at 100% science, 27 turns at -8 gpt.

490 BC brings us our first Elite unit, when an Archer beats up on a barbarian. We sell Currency to France for Construction and all their gold (205 pieces) and enter into a new age. Feudalism is our freebie tech. We pop a far away goody hut and unleash a bunch of barbarian Horses down by Miami. Whoops! :D Which leads to our first Palace Expansion in 430 BC.

We clear our first jungle tile in 210 BC. It won't be the last.

Our revolution to Republic starts in 150 BC with 14 cities and the changeover is completed in 70 BC. In 001 CommandoBob-grad vPike -> Sun Tzu's Art of War in 84. Rush with Ivan Pavlov and it is ours and not the Zulus, with their peksy Impis.

Despite the advancements we've made, we still have only one native luxury (Wine) and two native resources (Iron and Horses). The Dyes to the east, unclaimed and amdist the jungles, continue to mock us. We have 15 cities, 10 workers and 6 slaves and a long to-do list.

Throughout the next years we continue to buy slaves with tech, wines and gold. We need more cities and we have a boatload of jungles and marshes to drain.

L02 My Dyes is built on that lone Dye in 230 AD and Dyes are connected to the capital in 280 AD.

By 450 AD we have a 12 slave stack dedicated to jungle clearing east of the capital. Maya show up in 470 AD. The Forbidden Palace is built in 005 Valletta in 540 AD.

We declare war on Zulu in 560 AD and capture x01 Umtata in 570 AD. We bribe Iroquois into the war with Engineering.

610 AD comes and goes and we don't beat Tone's first place score.

One benefit of the Zulu is that L03 Gem City is founded inside Zulu territory and Gems are connected to 001 CommandoBob-grad, our third luxury.

A galley from Spain sails into view in 660 AD. Iroquois capture two Zulu cities and then make peace. We capture x02 Zimbabwe, gaining control of The Mausoleum of Mausollos, The Oracle and The Great Library in 700 AD and learn Theology from it, which makes The Oracle useless. The very next turn France and Iroquois both know Gunpowder and Education, so we learn them too and then The Great Library dies.

We know about Gunpowder but find no Saltpeter within our borders. All those hills and mountains and we get nada, zippo, null. From France we buy communicatin with Persia, India and China in 740 AD.

800 AD was Tone's second place effort in the table. We're not even close.

We get communications with the Aztecs in 880 AD.

Bartleby has the third place win in 940 AD.

We make peace with Zulu in 950 AD and pick up 6 trash cities, leaving them with two, after we capture their second captital of x04 Bapedi.

Considerable effort has been spent in jungle removal in East Russia, as you can see. We have 40 cities, 16 workers and 54 slaves.

Furs are connected to 001 CommandoBob-grad, our fourth native luxury, in 1020 AD. Germany is met in 1040 AD.

In 1090 AD we declare war on the Hittites; they have land and Saltpeter and we need both. *LongowmanOne* creates Ivan the Terrible, our first Military Great Leader, in 1100 AD. The war goes in our favor with sr02 Saltpeter Party being founded and Saltpeter being connected in 1180 AD. Cossacks, the Russian UU, can now be built and two of them are in 1190 AD. By 1250 AD the Hittites have gone from 21 to 8 cities and are on their third capital, while we enter a new age.

We get Medicine. We gift Persia, Korea, Sumeria and Germany into the Industrial Age. Germany gets Steam Power and wants Printing Press, Navigation, Medicine and Economics in trade, which we agree to.

Our luck with resources changes as Coal is connected three times to 001 CommandoBob-grad.

The Hittites are destroyed in 1290 AD.

And the world is fairly peaceful.

The Maya are bored (and/or stupid) and declare war on us in 1300 AD, grabbing and killing 6 Russian workers. They have a city close by and soon it is called x32 Uaxactun. We build some embassies with our newer contacts and we enlist five of Maya's neighbors into the war. We don't plan to do much else except to watch France, Spain, India, Korea, Persia and Sumeria send units into the Mayan meat-grinder. No matter how the war goes, we improve. Later, we get Japan into the war, too. The French city of Cherborg falls to Maya and we hasten to capture it, since it is 4 tiles from our capital. Cherborg becomes Russian in 1325 AD.

In 1350 AD eldar won with Greece, 5th place.

We learn Replaceable Parts that same year and One Rubber is connected to 001 CommandoBob-grad, so Infantry and Artillery come into play.

In 1380 AD we build Theory of Evolution in 015 Luxembourg City and start our Golden Age. Hoover Dam in 015 Luxembourg City in 1385 AD via our second SGL Korolev, born in 1320 AD.

By now we have 83 cities, 13 workers and 152 slaves. We are on the fourth turn of our Golden Age and build 044 Castries (Saint Lucia) and 045 Bridgetown (Barbados) this turn. In 1425 AD we learn Steel, but Oil is not connected until 1450 AD, which is exhausted after one turn of use (:eek:).

Iroquois go nutters in 1460 declaring war on us. They have 32 cities; we have 98. Their inital attacks net them one Mace and a jungle clearing stack of slaves. None of their invading Mounted Warriors have a victory when we cleanse the motherland. We counterattack, claiming x034 Kahnawake and liberating our recently captured slaves. St. Regis is razed. We get Sumeria, China, France, Persia, India, Korea, America, Spain, Germany, Zulu and Japan to MA with us on Iroquois. We lose a city to Iroquois in battle and an isolated city we got with the Zulu peace treaty flips to Sumeria. We recpature our city and raze another Iroquois city.

Now with 107 cities, 17 workers and 173 slaves, x038 Salamanca, the first Iroquois capital, is captured. We now control The Great Wall and Knights Templar and both are obsolete. x039 Cattaragus, the second Iroquois capital, is taken in 1505 AD and we now control Shakespeare's Theater. We grab x041 Grand River and Coprenicus's Observatory in 1510 AD.

In 1515 AD Spain destroys Maya.

Heroic Epic is built in L02 My Dyes in 1540 AD.

In 1565 AD we make peace with Iroquois, who are down to 11 cities while we have 131. And then we enter a new age. By 1570 AD we know that our free tech was Ecology, not Fission as we had hoped. Fission is 7 turns away at 100%, so we start learning. And it never occured to me to gift anyone else up to the Modern Age until I did this writeup. Plus, after eldar's victory in 1350 AD for 5th place, the next winning date is not until 1854 AD by bull17 with the Aztecs. Learn it or buy it, whenever I know Fusion won't affect where this game falls in the rankings.

Sumer plays with fire in 1575 AD, declaring war on Russia; their 31 cities vs. our 134. We lost one city to initial surge, some workers and a lot of border patrol. As we try to reclaim our captured city, we set off an Sumearian-Chinese MPP. The city is liberated and we have two enemies.

Actually, this is good news that Sumer decided to get all nasty with Russia. We need an international outcast and Sumer is close to us and has a lot more culture points. If they had not thrown the first punch we would have had to do that. Now China is another story. We have no beef with China, but we'll fight them, too. We waste no time in signing Military Alliances with everyone else in the world against these two. China will soon have border control issues, while we will have to put some hurt on Sumeria.

We don't do much to Sumeria in this war. Again, we take the back seat and let others do the dirty work. We send some Armies across the border to pillage resources and luxuries and we pulverized the Chinese units in the mountains by Cherborg. In 1600 AD we learn Fission and build The Pentagon in L02 My Dyes. In 1605 AD we raze New Sumer and switch 015 Luxembourg City from Palace to UN, due in 4 turns. Der is razed in 1610 AD and United Nations is completed in 1620. We agree to hold elections and the results are:

For this game, with the goal of building the United Nations, I will be using nation capitals for city names, courtesy of the WikiPedia World Capitals.

Only seven entries in the HOF for this game setting. I don't see anyway to get to the UN before 1000 AD, so the best I plan to hope for is becoming the new 5th place winner. And even then, getting the UN built by 1400 won't be that easy.

Then I started the game and drew.....

Russia.

And a horrible starting location. We stand on grass, but have 2 hills and 4 mountains in the inital 9 city tiles. Two BGs and a river are visible, so we'll be moving.

On the bright side, Russia is a popular civ for this kind of victory, being SCI and EXP. EXp will help with early tech trading and SCI will help us get smarter faster. And the three free techs don't hurt either.

Russia's UU is the Cossack, a Cavalry upgrade. It has the same A/D/M as Cavalry, but can attack multiple times in one turn. Cossacks cost 90, Cavalry cost 80. Ten more shields for more attacks per turn? Cheap.

We had a lot of units along the Sumerian border in hills and mountains to force them eastward when they trespassed us. These units were Maces, Knight, Horseman, Spear, Warrior and such; cheap blocking units. Most died, but Sumer took some loses.

Well, Sumeria was going to be the next target. They sorta helped me out. And they did not do that much damage; one city, 5 workers and weeding out some old units.

We get Iroquois to agree to an MA and ROP (we have an Army stuck on the far side of Iroquois land) and Iron.

The Start:

Since the goal is to have the most cultured city in the world, I decided to use a very common determination of culture: cash. These built cities will be named after the worlds wealthiest people, according to Forbes in/of 2009. Cities built to claim luxuries and resources will be named to reflect that, which is not new to me.

I did a little bit of reading on 20K strategy. This is my first attempt at this victory condition. I decided to not use the capital as my culture collector since I could not prebuild the palace. Instead, a second city would be the shrine to sophistication.

This is a popular VC in the HOF tables for Monarch and Huge. All ten slots are filled, so I just cannot waltz in and expect this game to be place on the table. It might happen, but only towards the end of the range.

So I get the game going and find out I am

China.

China, as a civ, is MIL and IND. Fast workers I like, but I don't expect a lot of warring on my part. China's UU, the Rider, I haven't used a lot, though it is a favorite for Conquest and Domination games.

Not a bad start. River, two BGs and Wines. The white tiles are not promising and the mini map puts me in the upper right hand corner of the world. So we begin. 001 William Gates III is the capital of China and building the city reveals two more BG, a goody hut and some tobacco. Looks good. Portugal grabs the goody hut from us in 3550 BC, while we wait for a culture pop to get the GH. We improve the BGs first and in 3100 BC Wines are connected. Shortly after that, in 2750 BC, and 6SE of the captial, we found Larry The Cable Guy, the city that will become our most refined and polished and cultured. Larry begins on The Great Library.

In 2710 BC we meet the Iroquois and in 2150 BC Zulu come a calling.

India greets us in 1675 BC. In 1625 002 Warren Buffett is built and Larry switches to a Temple, losing 20 shields to get some culture now. At 1500 BC it is very obvious that we getting hemmed in by our neighbors.

The land is fairly decent but we have big problems with our size and our neighbors. Horses are connected in 975 BC. In 290 BC The Great Library is built in Larry, the first Wonder for that city. Soon after that, in 190 BC, we declare war on Portugal (12) to get some room to expand.

The war hasn't done a whole lot for us, though in 30 AD we get our first MGL from an Archer. x01 Oporto is captured in 130 AD. We lose our Horse Army attacking Lisbon and pay Portugal for peace in 210 AD. In 280 AD we revolt to Republic, a Great Library tech, and have only two turns of anarchy for our seven city empire. In 380 AD Larry builds a colosseum instead of a palace, losing 183 sheilds in the switch. This happens again in 560, palace prebuild to market, losing 109 shields.

We've been at war with Portugal, but India has a source of Iron just outside our border and next to Bombay. In 610 AD x02 Bombay is captured and Iron is ours. In 660 AD we lose our last Army to three Indian Maces but the very next turn we gain *HorsemanOne* and Qianlong, and start a Mace Army. In just a few turns we can get Peace for Peace from India, but we decide to press on. China is very small and needs more land. The former Indian cities of x03 Calcutta and x04 Chittagong are added to China and in 780 AD Indian War Elephants appear. We make peace that same turn, now with 12 cities and some room to expand.

In 840 AD Larry builds Heroic Epic instead of Leonardo's Workshop since that wonder was built in Sparta. This same turn x01 Oporto flips back to Portugal.

In 880 AD we DoW on Portugal (14) and get India and Iroquois to join the fun, too. Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has more culture than Larry The Cable Guy. In 860 AD it had 2127 to Larry's 1436. So Lisbon has to be captured or razed or something for us to even have a chance at a 20K one city win. In 890 AD x01 Oporto becomes Chinese again and in 930 AD it flips back to Portugal. That same turn Larry builds a cathedral and starts a university. In 940 AD x05 Lisbon is captured and China now controls Sun Tzu's Art of War, The Great Lighthouse, The Pyramids and The Colossus. We recapture x01 Oporto and plan to raze the flippin' place, but my fingers get sloppy and we keep it.

Larry's culture is 1660, Salamanca of Iroquois is 1423.

In 970 AD we meet Egypt, Russia, Greece and Babylon on the IBT; not quite sure how that happened. A quick culture shows Larry is not the cultural powerhouse any longer. Ur of Sumeria has 2978 to Larry's 1753. Not sure when we met Sumeria but we did in the last few turns.

In 990 AD we rush the university in Larry.

The nation of China is not in the best of shape. While Lisbon is no longer a culture threat, Portugal still blocks our path. More importantly, so do India and Iroquois. We'll deal with them after Portugal.

In 1020 AD x06 Evora, the second capital of Portugal, is captured. The third capital of Portugal is captured by India on the IBT. Rome is encountered in 1030 AD. In 1090 AD we make peace with Portugal for Printing Press and communication with Persia and Japan. Both are broke and stupid.

Then we Dow on Iroquois (26) for southern expansion. We get India, Rome, Sumeria, Russia and Egypt into MAs vs. Iroquois. Larry builds Forbidden Palace during this war. We make peace in 1270 AD, capturing two cities, razing one and building three of our own. Shortly after the war we buy a World Map.

We learn Free Artistry and start on Shakespeare's Theater in Larry, which is completed in 1350 AD. In turn, we start our Golden Age. Larry is about 3500 in culture, Ur of Sumerian at 5000 and growing faster per turn (46 vs. 51). And while neither Ur or Larry can claim 20K before 2050 AD, the fact that Ur is bigger and better is not good.

The peace with Iroquois ends in 1370 AD. Iroquois are down to 9 cities; they had 26 at the start of our last war. Others have been nibbling away on cities of Hiawatha. We capture x09 Mauch Chunk and x10 Grand River on the first turn of the war, followed by x11 St. Regis on the next. Japan is eliminated by France in 1385 AD, right after we sold Japan Democracy. In 1410 we captured x15 Caughnawaga and the Iroquois are just a memory.

With Iroquois gone we have more room to expand. But Ur of Sumeria is still a problem. They started building Universal Suffrage back in 1395 AD. We buy Steam Power from Egypt in 1410 AD (and we connected to two Coal right from the start!) and learn that Sumeria has a monopoly on Industrialization. And they won't sell it for what we can pay. However, Sumeria is building Universal Suffrage in Agada (5), a tundra town, which nets 7 spt, so this wonder is 101 turns away. We increase science to 80% on Industrialization to learn it in 6 turns. When we do learn it, Universal Suffrage is only 14 turns away.

In 1435 AD Saltpeter is connected to our capital. Furs and Ivory have also been connected rather recently, giving China 3 native luxuries.

In 1445 AD we join the crowd by DoW on India (31) right after India and France make peace. x16 Allegheny and x17 Guimarães, both small cities, are captured right away, adding to our 37 cities. Egypt destroys Zulu and our Golden Age ends. We wait a few turns and then DoW on Portugal (2), one island and one mainland, in order to get some Gems. x21 Sao Paulo and x22 Delhi are both acquired in 1475 AD.

By 1510 AD India is no more.

Universal Suffrage is built in Larry The Cable Guy and Gems are connected to William Gates III on the same IBT.

In 1515 AD we sell Electricity to Sumeria for WM, Nationalism and 3574 of 3574 gold. Then we DoW on Sumeria (19). Next, we bribe everyone except Portugal into MAs vs. Sumeria, using our Wines as tradebait. Sumeria doesn't wait to reply, taking five cities from Rome on the first IBT. Even at 1515 AD, Rome lacks Iron.

In 5130 AD we make peace with Portugal.

Sumeria is on the other end of the pangea from us, so we do not plan to do much in this war. China adds cities, roads and rails and concentrates on learning more techs for more Great Wonders. At this point five games have already been placed into this table in the HOF and we'll have to do much better to get into the table. But first, Ur's culture has to be dealt with in some manner.

France and America both come to an understanding with Sumeria, but a little bit of gold-per-turn from us (6 gpt to France and 10 gpt to America) and they understand the world a bit differently.

In 1580 AD I get my first-ever double promoted unit, *RiderOneCavalryTwo*, thanks to Sumeria landing some Cavalry in China.

In 1585 AD all our cities are connected by rail.

We learn Replacable Parts and Rubber is connected at the same time, 1590 AD. We then sell Scientific Methods around and use the cash to spend 9000 gold on upgrades, which makes us Strong to all the other civs.

sanabas 7th place victory with Spain took place in 1600 AD. By now it is obvious I won't place in the tables at all, but I continue to have my first 20K Culture win. At this point, neither Ur or Larry The Cable Guy will have enough culture by 2050 AD.

In 1610 AD our initial MAs vs. Sumeria end. Six cities have been gobbled up by our friends. The wars continue, no one appears to pull out, and in 1620 AD Egypt captures Ur of Sumeria and Ur's culture becomes a non-issue. Moscow emerges as the leading contender in a 20K race, but has 4663 in culture compared to Larry's 6114. Sumeria is down to 9 cities.

Our last MA vs. Sumeria ends in 1665 AD. We offer peace, but they refuse our envoy. Egypt destroys Sumeria during that IBT.

In 1670 AD we DoW on Egypt (46). Most of their surplus military is off kicking Sumeria, while our military is close at hand. We share a rather long border with Egypt. We get the usual gang of idiots to join in the Egyptian dogpile, except for Portugal, still with only 1 city. We take 9 cities and lose 1 Cavalry. In this expansion, Incense is connected via L02 Sweet Incense, giving us our 5th native luxury. We take a few more cities a few turns later and Spices get connected to the capital followed by two Dyes in 1705 AD.

America destroys Egypt in 1730 AD.

In 1740 AD we plant spies around the world and Persia (48) doesn't like it and starts a war with us. We get everyone but Greece involved in this little misunderstanding (Greece and Persia have an MPP) and then proceed to pounce on Persian units outside of Persian borders. We're not afraid of Greece; we just don't want to be bothered with another war. Greece does honor the MPP to Persia and declares war on Babylon, France, Russia and America on this turn and next turn adds Maya to the list. Persia first surge of 20 units is stopped cold.

In 1756 we plant some more spies and Greece (31) declares war on us. Well, now that that is cleared up, we start on our offense. Nine cities that were once Persian or Greek become Chinese and four more are razed. Somehow Portugal (1) gets involved and starts a war with us. That was in 1760 AD. In 1764 AD we capture their lone island city of x53 Faro and that ends that squabble. In 1766 AD we make peace with Greece but not Persia. Persia has better land and is closer. In 1772 AD all of Persia that is close to China is captured and we slack off the pace, leaving Persia with seven cities and Rome as the capital of Persia, way on the east side of the pangea. In 1778 AD we see that we can win the game in 2042 AD. America takes out Persia in 1786 AD.

Once again we plant spies and get burned for it, this time by Russia (36). Everyone signs MAs vs. Russia and we start taking and razing cities.

We got Confucius, an SGL, back in 1774 AD, but haven't been able to use him yet. Back then we were just about done with the UN. After it was built we started on the Manhattan Project, then swithced it to SETI. In 1804 we use Confucius to rush the Internet. After this wonder is built Larry is making 74 cpt and takes the prize in 2022 AD. We capture a few more Russian town until their capital is Erech, which at one time was part of Sumeria. It is on the east end of the pangea, so we are not too worried about culture flips now. In 1826 AD King of America's win took 10th place on the tables; playing for pride now. No way to get on the tables. We make peace with Russia for all their gold (577 pieces).

Which means that America is soon at war with France and Babylon. Maya and America begin to lose cities and territory. We don't have much to do with it. Only one Mayan city is near us and we don't touch it, though someone does. We bribe America into an MA vs. Maya but it may be too late. Babylon likes American cities.

This will be my first ever attempt at a 20K culture city win. I've read up on it some and seen that either the captial or the second city becomes the spotlight city. Unless I get real lucky with whichever random civ I draw and have an excellent starting location, I will let my second city be my cultural Mecca. I know that delays things a bit, but I like being able to have a palace-prebuild for something, which cannot be done in the capital.

I've decided to use rich people for my city names, since being rich is considered the same as being cultured. I went to Forbes for my list.

Some conventions I use:

First Contact with new civs in Bold.
Great Wonders, when buit, in Blue.
Small Wonders, when built, in Dark Blue.
Luxuries, when connected, in Green.
Strategic Resourses, when connected, in Purple.
Civ name, when war declared by us or on us, in Red.
SGLs, when born, in Red and Italic.

General city names start with a three digit number, followed by the city name, like 001 CommandoBob-grad.
Luxury city will start with a capital L, then a two digit number and then the name, like L01 Spooky Spices.
Strategic resource citys will start with Sr, then a two digit number and then the name, like Sr01 HorseyTown.
Captured cities will start with a lowercase x, followed by a two digit number and then the original city name, like x01 Thermopylae.

When I refer to a civ in this format, Maya (27), the (27) indicates their city count, generally via MapStat. During a turn, this number only appears once per each civ. Generally I use this when war/peace is declared somewhere or we get hit with a trade embargo. It doesn't appear all the time, but when it is used that is what it means.
When a city is in that same format, like Paris (8), the number refers to city size after the event. I use this when I capture/lose a city or when a city flips. In the past it was before the event; from here on out it will be after the event.

Early on in the game I tend to save (manually) at the end of each turn; later I save at the start and end of each turn. I do this to control city happiness. MapStat will refresh itself after a manual save, so saving at the start of the turn gives me a chance to prevent cities from rioting. Plus, my PC is sometimes a bit flakey; this ensures I will have a nearby backup.

The first game session was several hours long and overall went badly.

I should have made the early trade for Ceremonial Burial, but I forgot that it gave access to Temples. I don't normally build Temples and was rather fixated on The Statue of Zeus. Right now I have been slowly learning Currency instead of Republic and that is sure to come back and bite me.

Larry The Cable Guy is my most cultured city, but it is far behind Lisbon of Portugal. And the war went badly. I spent the 180 gold to salvage an eArcher and two catapults. I had hoped to strike before Portugal got stronger. Pikes will soon defend instead of Spears. And I just noticed that I lack a source of Iron, so no Swords for China.

I haven't explored very much, either.

On the positive side, I do have The Great Library. And a palace prebuild for something.

I have considered ending this attempt and start over with another random selected civ. Two bad goofs early in the game, in addition to being overly focued on one course of action, may have crippled this attempt. But while quitting is the easier option, the whole premise of these attempts has been that any civ can win any victory condition. Starting over invalidates that premise. This will not be an easy game for a 20K city; not now. But I decide to play and learn how to do it right. I will have to play better to win this game.
