Perspective helps. I'm an Old Guy who has played Civ since the first release. With the exception of the mighty Civ2, every new version has been greeted with a mixture of disappointment and criticism. We compare a fledgling release that's cursed with those compromises necessary to get it to market with the previous version(s) that enjoyed years of polish and patches - not to mention the heroic and creative work of the modding community. Inevitably, the "latest and greatest" suffers by comparison.

When V was released I dl'd the trial version and after a few games I felt that it would be okay to wait until a patch or two came out to buy the game. I finally did so a couple of weeks ago. I felt that it had been significantly improved since its release. For me it is now in the "worth playing" stage. There will be improvements via patches and modding. That's the way it's always been with Civ.

None of the above is meant to imply that you shouldn't complain about things that you don't like in the game. Firaxis seems to pay attention and usually tries to remedy those things that get the most complaints.

Finally, the AI has always come in for criticism. Always. It will continue to be so unless Firaxis finds the tens of millions of dollars necessary to develop a chaos theory/neural net AI. While that might end some complaints the system requirements to run the thing would make NASA blink. If you strictly play SP (No matter how well) then try MP. I can almost guarantee that you'll get a great game and that you may be humbled.

What about civ 2 do you prefer?

Thanks for your reply! Civ 2 was a breakout game in that it used the capabilities of the PC's of the day to provide a rich and varied experience in Single Player. Until the Civ series began, if you wanted a challenging strategic sim game then you found an opponent and then you sat down at a table and played a board game. Civ 2, with its elaborate tech tree and random maps, opened the many-paths-to-victory model that has been a hallmark of the Civ series of games. There is still an alive and lively community of Civ 2 players decades after the game's release. I can't think of any other game with equivalent longevity.

Having said that, I am enjoying V. Part of the enjoyment will be watching the game improve over time.
