compatability question

i bought my version of civ3 (the basic edition...no expansion packs or patches, etc...) from download-free-games.com, a yahoo site, for like 30 bucks. mind you, i'm pretty new to civilization and i'm impatient as a rule, why i downloaded mine instead of buying it from ebay or whatever and saving like 50%. whatever.

anyway, once i got the game, i was talking with a civ3 veteran, and he told me i should get the v1.29 patch to fix all the stuff thats wrong with the original. fine. so i got it from this site and installed it into my version of civ3. the game stopped working, so i emailed support at the site where i bought it and they said their version wasn't compatable with "certain"--they weren't terribly specific--patches and upgrades, etc. so what can i do about this? how can i find out what will work (like how i can get v1.29 to work) and what will screw up my game? advice please!!!

thanks.

Look at the patch level after you reinstall or remove the patch. It will show on the screen. It probably is already at 1.29F.

Otherwise you may have a lang version patch issue. I thought that was fixed in 1.29f, but maybe not.

The thing is that for 30 bucks you probably could get Complete and it has all patches and the two addons.

30 for a 4 year old game is no bargain.

The downloadable versions have been modified by the sellers and are not compatible with the official patches. You need to use thier patches only... if they are available... which is unlikely.

You're better off getting Complete.
