Completely (seemingly) random CTDs

Just installed Civ 4 for the first time on this box.

AMD 4000+ processor
ASUS A8V mainboard
1gig ram
nVidia GeForce FX 5600 (my 6800 fried so I'm using a friends spare :()

I keep getting CTDs after just about anything. Nothing in particular sets it off (in games movies (which I've tried turning off), number of turns, unit action). For no real reason that I can see, it just likes to crash.

All my drivers (hardware/software) are up to date and I've tried a few different tweaks found on these forums....

So uhm... Any suggestions?

I guess I should make this one addition - it seems to crash in less than 20-25 turns. 25 turns is the longest (so far) that I've gone w/o crashing.

Me too and I'm totally at a loss. I've established that it now happens regardless of Civ 4 release level, and my drivers are the latest. Prior to 1.61, this NEVER happened. Any help greatly appreciated.

I tried reinstalling and not patching but that didn't seem to help either. Have turned all graphics to their lowest setting as well, but again, this doesn't change anything. The average cutoff seems to be around turn 15 give or take a few turns, regardless if it's a new game or a loaded one. Have also tried starting just about every type of game/array of settings.

Please help! I need my fix people!

most likely causes would be overheating (and yes.. civ4 puts a much higher strain on your graphics card than your average FPS game) or faulty hardware.. possibly the memory

thought of that too and have been running without side panels for three days, to no effect. ...and since I live in Scotland you can take it from me that room temperature is well within limits!! Thanks for the suggestion though. Memory-wise I have 1GB.

I didnt mean you have too little memory.. but rather that you could have broken memory.. try to run a memory test program like:

i've had this happen a couple a time now .. as has my friend.... seems to be after the game's gone on for a while ..we play huge maps 15 civs.

My Specs:

P4 3.0g
2gig DDR2
256 X800XL Radeon
Raided SATA's
Ultra Cool and Over Powered lol

I've noticed it since 1.61 but, I have everything jacked at 1280x1024 so that might not help.
