Computer charger overheating question

My laptop computer's charger often gets really hot (hot enough to be uncomfortable and even painful to hold). I'm concerned that I might burn it out. Whenever I notice a problem I unplug it and just run my computer on battery for a while but I'm still concerned that I might have a problem sooner or later. How real are my concerns? How heat-proof are the big black boxes on computer charger cords (and while you guys are at it what are these boxes called anyways)? Thanks a ton!

PS: I've never actually smelled anything burning if that helps

It happens to mine as well. I think it's just normal but you should unplug it for a while to cool it down.

I think if a charger gets so hot it is uncomfortable to touch, then someone designed it wrong. Many electrical components get hot in use. But they are placed in cases so that people do not directly touch them.
