hello all , i am currently in this game on the third difficulty setting(forgot the name).. and i have this pretty powerfull city with a population of 12 and i am in a democracy.. my question is that the computer has won this town over and stole it from me, so i went back to and older save about 15 turns before and i wanted to know how i can prevent them from taking it again.. with out war hopefully.

Where is this city? Is it near the ai's borders or close to your capital? Also, what civ are you playing and what Civ *stole* it from you? If they are religiuos with a ton of culture, that could be why. 2 more things: is espionage researched by them, and do you have a strong garrison in that city?

If city has foreign aliens in it because it is a city you captured in war, (I assume this is most likely the situation) then you must eliminate the aliens by starvation or building workers/settlers etc, this may mean reducing city to size 1 or 2 before regrowing city, also build more culture improvements in city (libraries/cathedrals etc)

But if this city is close to the alien capital it may be almost impossible to prevent another culture loss, all you can do is reduce its chances of happening

well i am zulu and India is the civ who wins the city over... my capital is far enough from the city i guess. india managed to sneak a settler on the edge of the continant and set up 1 city.....
and one more thing i guess the fact that one infantry unit is garrisoned there does not help either.

So I'm assuming that you lost a city to a culture flip, right? In that case, rush as many cultural improvements as you can afford, and hope that your city's culture will be strong enough to counter the culture of India.

well whats funny about the situation is that i had all the cult thing i could build in that city at least what there is up to the modern age... which i think is everything.... but i just ended up garrissioning more infantry there.... i ended up going for the space victory....i was kind of forced into since some of the other civs started researching the space parts... what kind of ways can i get them to stop doing that ... i just want to go for another type of victory

You can raze the city that they built the Apollo Program in. Also, if they have started to build spaceship parts, if you raze the capitol, you destroy any parts they have built so far.

Flips can be pretty darned annoying. In my recent game, Zulu had built a city on my border. I built my own city south of them. It was surrounded by 2 Zulu cities, the ocean, and one of my own cities. The northern Zulu city was about 7-8 tiles from my capital. My culture (from the histograh) was double that of the Zulus. I was sitting there wondering when I was going to get the Zulu city to flip over to me.

Instead, my city flipped to the friggin Zulus. I just don't get that one. It's closer to my capital than my city was to theirs, I have double their culture, I have cultural improvements in the city, and it's all my own native citizens.

When I captured it back a few turns later, I seriously considered razing it, the traitors. Do you get a rep hit for razing a captured city if it's all your own citizens?

Yes, this was BC or very shortly AD. Nobody was anywhere near getting espionage yet. The ensuing war was fought with knights and pikes.

Brings up a good question though. Is there any way to tell if a flip is espionage? AFAIK, there isn't. However, in this case, that would've been impossible.

This is similar to the tank vs spearman situation. The odds are on your side, but the random numbers decide. You may have 10% chance of flipping his city each turn, and he may have 0.5% chance of flipping yours, but he may still be lucky. How many of your city's tiles were under Zulu control, and how many military units did you station there.

AFAIK, you always get the rep hit for razing a city, but you only get rep hit for abandoning it if the majority of the citizens are of other nationalities.

You don't get a rep hit for razing/abandoning cities. Instead, you get an attitude hit, i.e. the AI's will hate you, but they will still do deals with you. If you abandon a city, you only get an attitude hit with the civ that originally owned the city. I don't think you get an attitude hit if you abandon one of your own cities.
