I started a HoF game yesterday with a seemingly VERY good start. I got the wonders looked for very easily. the first one came with a scientific leader (Temple of Artemis), the seconf was the pyramids which I took from the Zulus.

Now, playing the Maya, it was great to have a granary in every city as well as a temple, without using any effort building them.

I started with a heavy settler campaign. I only went to a short war against the Zulus so that I could obtain the pyramids. I turned on the french, but when they made the great wall wonder, taking their cities proved to be a difficult task with lots of casualties. Instead I went against the Americans and wiped them out. My first cavalry unit entered the stage while most civs still had spearmen. I easily conquered 60 % of the map and had to go on amphibious missions in order to obtain 65%.

this is how the scoring looks.

Here comes the funny part. While I played under Monarchy government, the score per turn was around 33-34 points.
As you can see on the score graph, once the americans were finished off, the score was climbing steadily until I switched to democracy in the year of our lord 1150 AD. Then it declined to 25-26 points per turn. I made sure everybody was happy. I had all the luxuries I needed, I even stayed away from researching steam power for a while so that the hanging gardens wouldnt become absolete. SO.. my people WERE happy !! Still the scoring per turn dropped dramatically. I am starting to think that changing from Monarchy to Democracy in a game where you are in full control, is wasting points per turn !!
I dont have an explenation for this, I was really surprised to see this effect, so I started going for communism to see what happened once I changed to Communism. And.. as I though.. the scoring per turn increased.. now I get 36 points per turn, and it happened over 1 turn. from a measly 27-28 points pr turn to 36 points. if there was 300 turns left, that would mean 2400 points lost. Does anyone else feel the same way about demoCRAZY ?

I have sworn that I will play this game through on Communism and not even touch democracy again. On the next HoF try I might even play monarchy all the way ! Doesnt make sense.

By the way.. here is my map

Exactly what factors are involved that makes the pt/pr turn increase ? I am struggling hard by making huge cities. Disbanding smaller ones that take foodtiles from the Megapolis cities.
Please enlighten me, somebody :grad:

At the end of your Monarchy reign did you have a lot of units in cities? Garrison units provide happiness under Monarchy but not Republic, so that might be why the ppt dropped.

Also, delaying Steam Power in order to milk the Hanging Gardens is unwise. Steam Power allows you to build railroads which gives +1 food to any irrigated tile. That means a lot more people and in the long run a lot more points than HG provides...

Yes, and no... I had so many luxuries and marketplaces that it made no difference. They were all happy. I also put the luxury slider on 30 % just to make SURE that once the anarchy was over, it would be a happy happy family everywhere.

People in the cities dont mind military presense, do they ? if they show as happy, can they be more happy ? Besides, guns are fun toys !! :ar15:

I didnt delay it for long.. just a couple of turns so that I could see how my new democracy gov. was handling the transition. When I saw that everybody was laughing and giggling, I immediately got steampower. Total delay, 4 turns. cus I researched nationalism instead of steam. Took 4 turns.

and.. hehe, u forgot to check the poll

I'd vote in the poll if it had this option:
[civ3] [ptw] Yes, milk with Democracy (maybe Republic).
[c3c] I haven't accumulated enough testing data to decide yet...

oops, I seem to have answered one of your questions INSIDE the quote area,, thought maybe u missed it ?

Missed it I did!

All governments have a military police factor. For Monarchy, it's three. That means that for up to three military units, you will receive an extra smiley face in addition to what you would have by default. For Republic, the military police factor is zero.

It doesn't make the happy citizens happier, but it does make more citizens happy.

Just another thought...

do u think it is possible that the population under a DEMOCRATIC or REPUBLIC gov. will deny you the full extent of the points possible IF there are armies/units PRESENT in the cites ? (During peace or war)
