Conquest or Domination on a huge map seems nigh impossible!

I tend to occasionally play huge maps pretty exclusively on normal speed. I occasionally win with space but tend to focus on conquest. Albeit i have domination almost always turned off. With the amount of ground I have to cover I typically avoid a lot of warring until I reach tanks. Is it the most efficient way? Probably not. But its definitely a fun approach. Its an interesting mad race against the clock. If you stay pretty neutral and avoid wars before you often end up with one or 2 big powerhouses to contend with which makes the logistics of capping a huge map in the last 150-200 years of the game really interesting even on emp.

Someone mentioned space wins becoming unsatisfying after a while. Do conq/domi wins ever become unsatisfying for those of you who do that?

My best finish date for domination on a large map is 1505, which makes huge look quite possible.

Domination is probably my favourite condition. I play on large maps at epic speed mostly, which makes domination a good challange sometimes, but very doable.

They're the most straight-forward win condition - see land, take it.

I used to only go for conq/dom wins, mostly because I like playing with the modern warfare toys. Now that I'm playing again, I've done (2) domination wins on huge/marathon and (1) apostic diplo win.

The downside of conq/dom is that there's a definite point at which you've won, you just haven't convinced the game that you've won yet. So if you're evenly matched, it can become a bit of a slog to take down all your opponents in the last 1/4 of the game. Lots and lots of unit production, unit moving, marshalling, taking/razing cities, and defending your turf. Especially boring if the opponent AI is completely predictable (as in vanilla Civ4). Making the AI perform better with mods changes that up a bit and makes things more enjoyable.

The space race wins are interesting - but you have to chase the techs in pretty much an optimal order to get everything to finish near to each other.

Hmf. I guess i'm just gamed out. Space wins are nice because they are orderly, logical, predictable. But boring after a point, eventually you have just beaten the game and new games are just a repetition of things already done. I rarely go past 150 turns these days, when i can even be bothered to play.

War games might be interesting, if it didn't take so damn long and involve so much micro. If i could automate things, according to my specifications, this entire game would be much better but alas...

Oh well.

Play Rome. Praet rush. Pangea. It's hard to mess that up.

I play 100% huge maps for domination/conquest victory. It's awfully fun until the 19th century. Then it gets a bit boring, with a million units to manage... it's hardly impossible, though.
