Conquests Designer Diary 4 - Medieval Europe

Sounds pretty good (relics, plague, specific tech-trees,...) but the first picture looks pathetic (I mean the spear and swordsman units and the scarce cities).

BTW I really wonder why Americans use the expression "battle of Tours" for what we refer to as the battle of Poitiers (732, Charles Martel blocked a strong Muslim raid).

I have to say that I am sooo glad that they've implemented Plagues-as they said they hoped to :) :)!! All I want to know is-HOW is it implemented? Is it TOTALLY random, like Volcanoes, or is it related to city placement-like with Disease in Marsh and Jungle terrain?? I'm VERY intrigued by this, as it will make a VERY interesting addition to the Epic Game! I just hope that, like disease, there are improvements which can either slow or prevent plagues!!
Oh, I'm also VERY intrigued by what an Inquisitor Unit can do ;) :)!! Does this mean that Religion is going to have a MUCH stronger focus in CivIII now? I'm very, very curious, but also very happy with what I've seen-and am now quite convinced that Medieval Europe will be my favourite scenario :) :) :)!!!

YOurs,
Aussie_Lurker

and what happans when a Pagan (Vikings) or Muslim faction caputres a Holy Relic?

I'm just looking at it now

Interesting read. The part in italics was interesting, good touch by Firaxis. I guess single regicide would be a quick death. I wonder what the playable civs are.

First Screenshot: Why is Paris on Fire?

Last Screenshot: Ooh, Tar. It doesn't seem like they have any tar throwing people for Castle Seiges :( But Byzantine seems like they could use it. ;) Does anyone know what "Krak des Chevaliers" is?

Black Death seems interesting. It appears to be timed (maybe some kind of slight events trigger?)

EDIT: I just noticed a bunch new stuff by going to the media page.

Wool - Luxury resource
Spy - Detects invisible assasins, 2.2.1 treats all squares as roads
Splinter of the True Cross - German Relic
Inquistador - Detects invisible, all squares as roads, 4.1.1 (nice attack)
Crusader - 4.3.1 40 shields
Crown of Thorns - French Relic
Assassin - 5.1.1 (OK, that's a nice attack ;) ), invisible, sees invisible
Holy Grail - English Relic
Shroud of Turin - Relic of the Burgandians

That's about it.

I think the Krak des Chevaliers is what they called it the declaration when they layed down what amounts to Chivlary.

Thanks. I wonder why it needs tar. But I like wonders requiring something.

BTW, check out my edit of the last post, in case you didn't see the media page.

"Krak des Chevaliers" is the greatest of the Crusader castles in the Middle East. It is still standing today in Syria and was the base of the Knights Templar I believe.

Burgundy, France.. Britanny.. Vikings.. Spai... ahh, ok, I gotchya

Here's what I can make out of this preview...

aaminion00, the areas where you say there is nothing important in (the areas of black text on your map), are extremely important to the game and contain some of the strongest civs in the game.

The reviewer must have been playing one of the European Civs. The game plays very different if you choose one of the other sides.

I know, I'm just joking, but pointing out that 75% of the map was not shown at all. They mention Jerusalem, Russia, and a number of other civilization, but we don't get to see even a glimpse of it on the world map.

This whole 'Eurocentrism!' issue is by no means justified (except for the missing African Civ, I agree on that point).
Please wait until you finally see the Conquests. The only one that really features Europe is Napoleonic Wars.
Mseoamerica? Mesopotamia? WW2 Pacific?

Not even the previews for Middle Ages really feature European Civs. The first thing that was said about it was that Byzantium will be in it. The UGO site tells you about Ansars. And what do you think Jerusalem will be? A European city, in 843 AD?

And anyway, until C3C the common issue was 'Americacentrism!' (I have to admit, even I felt like this sometimes), now everyone talks about Europe?

The truth is, C3C is 'Middle-East-centric'! Shame on you!

WTH? People, I'm talking about the preview which I was dissapointed in. Not the actual game. I KNOW that there are civs in those places, i'm just dissapointed I didn't get to see a single one.

As for civ3 being eurocentric, I'm European. It's not too Eurocentric, but the Celts were far from necessary.

I realize that, I think that Doc is 'cross threading'.

I agree with you, that preview only scratched the surface of the scenario and focused on about a quarter of the map. Trust me, there's stuff going on there also.

I woukd imagine that the fall of Rome one is cool...

so? that just means I have reason to expand the territory of the mighty Byzantines to emcompass the lands of the barbarian horde!
