I'm creating one thread per conquest in order to discuss strategies and experiences with each conquest. I'm curious to see what people think is the best civ to play for each one, as well as the easiest and toughest. I'd like to see some straegies and tips for each civ.

What a difference a turn makes.Knowing that one turn one a bug allows you to make all sorts of great deals with the AI players,i waited until turn 2 to do foreign realtions and it makes a huge difference, only one Ottomans were willing to make an alliance with me...and now austria is attacking denmark so i am at war with austria also...I have already destroyed the Dutch and im working on killing off the Italians, but the diplomatic situations seems to be key to surviving and winning.Im hoping to make a deal with the Spanish soon ... and this is only turn 3...I must say one thing...this is probably more historically realistic,,,as the French were pretty much isolated diplomatically by the surrounding monarchies that were threatened by the French revolution and Napoleon...anyway its only turn 3,,,but i think think this way is more fun.Ill let you know how i do...one key thing to accomplish is to get mutual defense pacts with the russians and the ottomans as this will protect against Austria and Prussia..i think diplomacy is the key to this scenario.

One more thought for opening moves...use your leader Davout to make an army on the first turn and use it to attack the Neoplitans right away and u will get a golden age...then mobilize and the comination will help u churn out troops quickly for the first 20 turns....u will need them

Common opinion on the diplo problem is: You are very well allowed to make deals; France and England should get straight MAs with everyone. If you wait until turn 2 most Civ will have MAs/MPPs against you.
Just don't take cities in the deal.
About the Leader: Better wait until turn 3 or so with the GA, you'll benefit a lot more when you have some more Workers already. Make an ICav Army with one MGL, and use #2 for either the MilAc (Paris) or the FP in Marseilles. You cannot build the FP when mobilized, so also wait here as well.
The most important thing about the KoN war are the Silks. Also, sign a RoP with Austria and form a Dyes Colony S of Venice ASAP. With 5 Luxuries, situation will look much better.

As Prussia you don't get great inf & cav later on so invest heavily in artillery. Use fortifications vs the French and keep the west heavily manned. Consider blowing some French roads with cavalry to slow their attack, it can be worth the sacrifice.

Prussia needs more cities to compete with the big boys so sieze Denmark. A MPP with Russia/Austria can really take the sting out of French advances as it is their units clashing, a RoP then is only natural.

As Prussia I like to attack the weaker civs and kind of remain neutral, attacking the french Coalition and the English Coalition (denmark, Neopolitan, maybe Dutch) once that is done, drag spain into a war versus France. While France is whooping spains arse (unfortunately they will make plenty of VP's) but you can sneak in and attack France. I also like to have a MPP with Austria (unfortunately sometimes Austria will delcare war on France to early but whatever)

Thats usually what I do as Prussia

The eaisiest way to win is be England and get MPPs for cities, by turn two you've won!

Yawn. Offense intended. Even more easy it would be going to the editor, enable Regicide, and place all Kings next to your Capital. Works best with Russia, since the Cossack has 'Blitz'.

One thing that really bugs me is the AI razing cities. Who would capture Rome and tear it down? The Vandals are long gone by the early 19th century but France insists on going on a rampage.

It is even more ridiculous when Rome is on a victory marker and the scenario has settlers disabled. It is so obvious that the AI is not aware of victory conditions and thinks it is business as usual.

I had to quit when faced with such stupidity - there has to be some way to disable razing.

who cares, just fortify a unit on it and the city dosn't matter, then again, ther isn't exactly a very good defence bonus, and the only reason to do the napolianic and do the city for MPP strategy is if your a newbie and you don't want the spot to look empty (or that's the only conquest left!).

I noticed that after i killed captured Amsterdam and killed the Dutch that my mobilization automatically went from war time to peace...unfortunately i didnt notice it until 30 turns later...is this a bug?

has anyone other than me ever seen the dutch take another city. On my game as prussia I had perfect view as they sent the lone cavalry to Vejle, he attacked one musketman and survived not losing a hp, then next turn he attacked again and took the city, it wasn't until many turns later that I took it off them. I was amazed the Dutch managed to get a 2 city. Anyway I am making a mod for Napoleon as there are a few things that need changing *cough* sweden are as advanced as russia is so wrong it is unbelievable, but portugal are like the saviour.

ozza, consider giving Sweden the SEA trait additionally, and by all means give them 2 Workers to start with. Plus at least a Bank in Stockholm. That way, they are really playable (follow my sig).

Portugal...I can life with Banks in Lisbon and Oporto, but Universities?

I am very interested actually in your Sweden thread as I am thinking of having a go as Sweden, or may be Kingdom of Naples

i was bored one evening many moons ago and decided to play england on deity (for my ability at that particular time it was basically a suicide mission / joke game), i got dogpiled very early on so imagine my surprise when i eventually won on VPs just by sinking everything that moved

Here are the war strategies at the beginning for the 3 of the main countries:
I will post the others some other time.
Spain:Quite Difficult especially on harder levels, take Portugal and Gibraltar first, then against france sign alliances against them with prussia, austria and the ottomans against france. Strike at Montauban as it is never overly defended, then move on to Bordeaux. Take the southern strip of France by taking the two cities I mentiones and Marseille, Turin and Valence. Then begin to attack Austria.

France: Easily build some vet imp. cav. then put them into your armies, invade dutch, take the KoN, then I usually target Spain as they are weakest or you can target Prussia. Always keep northern area defended as Britain will ship over if you don't stop them. If you take Spain advance into Portugal and Gibraltar.

Ottomans: To me these are the hardest civ you can play without modding, which effectively is true of the time, they did never get invaded by Napoleon, but at the time they were a declining civ which definitely shows in this conquest, poor units help you to struggle. I usually take KoN before France does, by blocking France off from reaching by land then invading KoN. I then usually invade Southern Russia early where they have huge corruption and not many units due to bad infrastructure at the beginning. Although your cities are probably worse, you can just about invade up to and including Kiev and Kharkov. Usually from then I get stuck, when I done this I was successful up until now but then Austria and France signed alliances with Russia against me and just overran me as I had no allies, Denmark had been invaded by Prussia, in return Prussia had 2 cities Danzig and Konigsberg, the rest all belonged to France except Leipzig and Posen which Austria owned. France had invaded all of Spain, Dutch, Portugal. Sweden had fallen to Russia, all that was left for me to sign alliances with on mainland Europe was 2 city Prussia. Oh yeah and Gibraltar was there as well, no help though. Britain hardly ever have any impact in the ending of the game. With all this the Prussians who I signed alliances with so I could distract the enemies and prepare my units, though within 5 turns France took Danzig and Russia had taken Konigsberg eliminating Prussia, by now I was done for. Remarkably 10 turns later Austria took Gibraltar. So by then I had lost around 4 cities, still battling, but Sipahi and Janissary are no much for Imperial Guards from the west where I had Janissary defending, Hussar from the North with the odd Danish Cavalry where I had Sipahi. Then Russia on the east where I had about 6 Janissary there and 8 Sipahi, not well defended at all, Guard's I think are the most cost effective of the elite units, and Russia by end game can pump lots of them. Very hard to tackle. Trust me a game with the Ottomans is very hard

One point to add: Avoid small, heavily guarded VP locations. The AI will stack lots of Defenders there, leading to high casualties without being worth it.

Capture a size 10 city = 1000VPs (plus defenders)
Capture a size 5 VP town = 500VPs (conquest) + 500VPs (location) after 20 turns...

In short: Ignore Gibraltar.
