Can you add mine to this lou long?

Well, I can add a link in the directory (first few posts) but I need you to write a small report/presentation of your scenarios like the others did. That I don't do myself. When it is done I will put the link.

Scenario Title: The Battle of Iwo Jima
Version: 1.0
Type: Historical and "Small, Quick and Tactical"

Overall mark: 8/10
(within the type of small and quick)

Playability:
Very simple scenario, fast, with no known bugs. It isn't a scenario that will not incentivate re-play as you can only play as US (and is very very simple).

Comments (both good and improvement ideas):
- Very small files (very fast download)! :)
- It achieves it's goal of Small and Quick
- New units are good
- Limited naval battle due to weak Jap Fleet
- Only possible to play on one side
- Victory almost assured (due to no time limit) :(
- No time limit so not much stress
- Replayability: low :(
- Accuracy: good but could be improved
- It needs a little bit more complexity

- Type : Fast, a bit silly & Fun [c3c]
- Map size and number of civs: 60x60, 8 civs
- Download size: 340kb
- MP version: yes, only 8 players (best played on MP)
- Description: Get 10 Easter eggs before others do. There are only 40 eggs on the map so there's not enough for everyone!
- Special features: Fast, nothing to do with normal civ (you go around searching for eggs...)

- Type : Historical scenario : the fights between Muslim and Christians to control medieval Spain.

- current version 1.5 (24th of November 2006)

- Map size and number of civs: 100 X 100, 12 civs

- Download size: 31MB + biq file.

- MP version: not yet but there will be.

- Description: Unite the Iberian peninsula. Play as Christians (Portugal, Leon, Aragon, Castilla, Navarra, France or Provence), Muslims (decadent Almoravids, fanatical Almohads and Nasrids, or the pirates (unplayable)) or be alone playing as Valencia.

- Special features:
Fast loading
New tech-trees, 1 for the Christians (well-developped), 1 for the Muslim (more limited) over 3 different eras (1085 to 1492).
Lots of new units (plenty of knights, many Muslim units such as camelry or Arab archers, plenty of ships)
Use the benefits of cheap crusaders, Templars or the knights of Aviz, Caltrava and al Cantara as the Christians.
Start with swordsman and finish with musketmen.

- Type : Historical with a bit of added fun. [c3c]
- Map size and number of civs: 200x100, 7 civs
- Date & Place: The Carribbean, 1656 AD.
- Download size: about 40mb
- MP version: Yes, as the scenario only has 7 civs.
- Description: Play as either the Spanish, English, French, Dutch, Cherokee or as two different Pirate Civs. The Goal is to simply get 50 treasures to your capital. Might sound easy but it isn't ;)
- Special features: Fast loading & playing, a LOT of naval action and loads of fun. Over 20 new ships + about 10 new land/air units.
- URL to the scenario thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=115519

Overall mark : 8 / 10 (which is very good).

! Note ! : the version tested was a division version and not the latest one so the current one can be slightly different.

The main positive features :
- a scenario for the people who are crazy about WWI. It is so precise it looks a bit like a wargame sometimes.
- Historical accuracy
- replayability with different civs that have very different units, strategies
- it is fun to make war at the beginning of the military planes !

Donwload & Install : OK, here I got problems since my unzipper blocked after "jaeger". Apparently only one other person had that pb so it should not be an issue.
Main Scenario files (32 or 35 MB) and biq file separated.

Playability : perfect AFAIK. Of course I haven't tested all civs, all units, all improvements and all situations but apparently no bugs. Anyway the scenario is updated frequently so if you have any problem, you can ask.

Balance and AI : good. Generally it is interesting to see different strategies. However the AI is not that great with artillery (which was THE weapon of WWI) and does not play trenches warfare too well, preferring to hurl masses of infantry. It plays sometimes really well, considering the limitations of the AI. But sometimes it plays in a very dumb way which can make it quite easy to win.
But these problems are Civ3-engine-related and not related to the scenario. One way to avoid these limitations is to play in PBEM.

Civs : plenty of civs to choose from. The main countries (Russia, England, Germany, Austria, France, Ottomans), as well as smaller ones usually with their special troops.

Realism : pretty good. For instance this is an infantry war and it shows. The countries that have conscription get new conscripts every two months IIRC.
Main issue here : the Civ3-engine limitations again.
Many if not most units have their historical names (capital ships, starting corps and many land units).
There are no "killer" units that unbalance the game which is good !

MP : definitely a very interesting way of playing this scenario, probably the best. A special MP version exists which is very kind. The delay between turns disappears in PBEMs, as do the Civ3-engine limitations. So altogether Bravo for the MP version and the way it plays.
You must only remember you cannot exchange techs with your allies most of the time.

Art & units : ranging from average to perfect. I am not so crazy about most ship units but at least they give a flavor. The scenario uses a special terrain set that might seem strange if you never used terrain mods but it works definitely OK. Some of the early planes are just great !

Minor shortcomings (personal opinions) :
- the scenario is very big (map, number of civs, land development, units) and it very slow at start-up (better use a save) and can take a while between turns. The tech-tree is quite slow as well and since every turn is already quite busy it appears even slower. Now was it possible to do otherwise for a relaistic WWI scenario ? Probably not.
- limited pedia

Well : accurate, documented, with a lot of replayability, complete with dedicated tech-tree, units,... and bug-free this scenario is IMHO the best WWI scenario around. Main drawback : it needs time. And IMHO it is best played in MP/PBEM.

Overall mark : 9.5 / 10 (but not for everyone).

The main positive features :
- originality and fun.
- VERY entertaining new diplomacy texts.
- gives the same kind of feeling as in an horror-movie.

Donwload & Install : pretty simple and not too big (~ 8 MB).

Playability : perfect AFAIK.

Replayability : OK but limited. You can play the different factions that have very different units and flavors, but there are only 4. Besides the settings don't change and the scenario is short so there usually won't be dramatic strategic changes from one game to another.

Balance and AI : good. However this is not the main interest of the scenario. Basically (and except if you play the Zombies) your "civ" is basically in danger and it shows and feels like it. You are likely to be overwhelmed by zombies so you don't really have a fair chance. But to win (difficult) you must have a good strategy and sheer luck !

Civs : only 4

Realism : now what on earth are you talking about ????
This scenario recreates the atmosphere of a small town under siege by zombies, just like in many B-horror-movies. However within these limitations it does a very good job. The terrain and diplo have been changed. They represent a city with the actual Civ3 cities being small isolated strategic points of resistance (police station). And the new diplomatic texts range from good to hilarious !

MP : never tested AFAIK but with 4 players and the limited size of the map it should definitely be possible (and entertaining).

Modding : The urban area is well represented, the units are fun (ghouls anyone ?) albeit not many (zombies, SWAT,...). Altogether what is need has been added but not too much which kept the size reasonable.

Minor shortcomings (personal opinions) :
- the urban terrain doesn't always make it easy to spot the units.
- the limited development of your civ since after a while you can feel bored to have to try to win a race against overwhelming (and continuous) waves of zombies. But that's the spirit of the scenario ! It is just NOT the type of scenarios for people who like epics.

So : it is a very funny and original scenario with lots of work on the diplomacy texts. It is not too long and makes you feel paranoid just like in the movie equivalents. But it is very special and not for everybody. If you enjoy only epics or historical scenarios with long expansion, go somewhere else. In its category though it is a kind of jewel and if you want to try something relatively short, very different and funny, try it out !

Since CFC is using the English language as medium it is normal the mods and scenarios published here are for the English version of C3C.

Now, albeit US-based, CFC is also very international. Most of these non-US members are Europeans with many South-Americans as well. And many of these people have a localized version of C3C (German, French, Spanish, Italian,...) or vanilla Civ 3 that makes it very difficult for them to play English mods, not because of the English language but because the coding of units (within the units INI files to be precise) is different.

Traditionally trying to play an English mod/scenario with a localized version of Civ3/C3C causes the game to crash and that kind of message to appear :

exemple :

"LOAD ERROR
File not found
"Art\Units\ArabPikeman\..\Horseman\HorsemanRun.amb"

Ahora el juego saldrá"

in the Spanish version.

1/ One possibility is to rename and check most of the units INI files (long, tedious and prone to cause bugs).

2/ The other is to use a small program that takes care of renaming for you.
At the moment this easy solution exist in two languages thanks to the job of friendly programmers and you can find them at the following URLs :

- French : http://www.civfr.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4767
- German : http://www.civforum.de/showthread.php?t=14827 or http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=73272
- Spanish : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=130988

3/ A third possibility is to have a dual install of C3C in both your native language and English. This does not slove the problem with units from vanilla Civ3 though.

None of these solutions provide a translation for the texts, these will appear in English, it just makes the scenarios/mods playable without bugs.

PS. if you know other ways of solving the problem or other programs such as the ones already existing for German and French, please let us know !

- Scenario Title : Going Viking
- Type : Medieval
- Dates and place : North West Europe during the Viking Age
- Map size and civ # : 180x180 19 civs (6 playable)
- Download size : ~15 MB
- MP version (yes/no) : ? (never been tested).
- Synopsis/Description: This scenario puts you in the shoes of an exiled Viking Chieftain trying to carve out a kingdom in France, Britain and Ireland.

-Special features :
* Viking longboats, Flagships and Dragonships have bombard ability to simulate raiding the coast line (I have renamed the labels text file so it says "Viking surprise raid destroyed improvements" and such like). Longboats have a bombard range of 2 because it is imagined that they can travel up river and strike further inland.

* Berserkers have "Nuke" flag - Berserks are basically the dark age equivalent of weapons of mass destruction. The pollution graphic is now the graveyard pollution and shows dead bodies and the text is renamed appropriately. You can only produce Berserkers if you build Berserker Quarters- this is a building that can 'meltdown' so if you allow your berserks to get bored they may decide to rip up your settlement and kill lots of people just for fun and the chance to get to Valhalla.

* There is a Treasure unit which can be captured and turned into gold and victory points when you return it to your capital. The Viking Raider unit has the enslavement ability to produce more booty. Treasure units can also be produced by building certain trade-producing "buildings": Weavers, Fur Trappers and Slave Traders. These buildings can only be built where the required resource is within the borders of a city.

* Two new govnt's: Viking Rule and Christian kingship.

* New 'buildings': Drinking Hall; Skald; Chief's Hall; Boat Builder; Harbour; Fisherman; Smithy(and some others I can't remember spent too long in the Drinking Hall last night).

* Wonders: Hall of Champions; Odin's Wisdon; Thor's Hammer; Leif Eriksson's Voyage; Great Saga; (some others I can't remember spent too long in the Drinking Hall last night).

* Units: Hill Fighters; Clansmen; Chevaliers; Galloglass; Huscarls; Farmers; Shield Maidens; Berserkers; Hirdmen; Raiders and many more

Scenario Title: 1421 The Year China Discover America
Version: 1.0
Type: Historical Fiction

Overall mark: 6/10

Playability:
It's a reasonable simple scenario, not long, with no known bugs. It is a good idea (exploring a historical fiction idea). The main issue with it is that is very unbalanced and going to America (the theoretical goal) is only if you like to replicate the idea of having the Chinese discovering America before the Europeans.

Other Comments
- Size: Excellent! (<2Mb) :)
- Playbility time: Very good! :)
- Some new (but limited) number of new units
- Limitates settlers production, which makes it interesting
- Big amount of barbarians in the beginning makes it fun to go and "pacify" many islands
- Possible undocumented feature: ships maybe sink less than described in the rules
- Game is very unbalanced, with the Chinese having a too strong position, making it almost impossible to lose. :(
- Too many Civ's: if the focus is the Chinese discovery of America, then the other nations are not necessary
- Only available to play with China
- Replayability: low because achieving victory with the Chinese is too easy (no incentive to play again) :(
- Even though the goal is to achieve America, there is not incentive to do it (no VP's, no treasure, etc)

Updated, albeit not much stuff. More reviews would be REAL nice so if you played 1 scenario, please take some time to tell the others what you think of it.

Scenario Title: The Great War (WWI)
Version: 2.1
Type: Historical Scenario WWI

Overall mark: 7/10
Note: This review is based on a 15 turn try. See below why.

Re-Playability:
Reasonable as there is a few nations you can choose to play with. Not all nations are that fun, though. I tried Russia and it was a dull game because it had some good defending units but very few good attacking units.
Encountered no bugs and everything seems pretty well-thought.

Creativity & Accuracy:
A lot of new units, some very innovative ideas (mines, zepplins, etc). Just looking at the units will make you at awe with the scenario!
AFAIK, the scen is very very accurate and realistic.

Size & Time:
A perfectionist scenario has it's toll:
- it's a BIG download
- has a very high waiting time (between turns): 10 min in my PC {P4\2.66GHz\1GB RAM}. :(

Overall Comment:
This is a great idea for a scenario, a lot of work must have been put behind this perfectionist scenario! I enjoyed the variety of units and the tech tree.
Encountered no bugs and everything seems pretty well-thought.
The problem with this scenario is that is just too heavy. I was so interested that I played around 15 turns (meaning 1h30m of just waiting) but then I just gave up. Unless you have a very good PC, it's not really feasible to play, which is a pitty. A really pitty.

=> One option to consider is the TGW - Division Level, which is the same scenario but with less units.

.

Comments:
I wanted to try this scenario because I liked the idea, but couldn't get it to work. I guess the creator is no longer supporting it, so I don't advice you to try it.

.

El Justo said:
so this rating is based on only 15 turns?
Yes. If the inter-turns were shorter, I'd have probably played all the way and gave it a very very high rate (between 9 and 10), but the waiting made it not worth while for me.

For people who are willing to wait some time between turns, this is a great scenario (as long as they like WWI scenarios). For me - too impatient to wait - it's not. I'd rather try something else: I'm trying TGW Div Level right now!!!
