Just got Conquests, and a few things are confusing me that I can't find answers for in manual or civilopedia, I wonder if you can help.

1. I've only run up a couple of test games but seem unable to get the AI to offer World Map and Territory Map trades, in fact they never appear in the items to offer in trade. Is this a change or what?

2. What exactly does the Sentry option do for units?

3. Do Volcanoes have any positive use or benefit, or should they be avoided in case they erupt?

4. Cows, or lack of them. I am still pretty much a Civ3 newbie but most games I started I would usually get a cow somewhere within range, but I see almost no cows at all in the test games I have started! Is this just luck of the draw or are they restricted somehow?

5. What is the Seed number in the options screen?

Thanks a lot.

Creosote, there is a separate forum for Conquest.

You posted here about the conquest patches yesterday. No offense but I think you should post in the proper forum. :)

1. Communications trading moved to Printing Press, map trading to Navigation.
3. Avoid volcanoes in general, they have no positive effects whatsoever.
4. Cattle/Cows are here too ;) You just had no luck with your starts.

2. the sentry option allows a unit to fortify, but awaken when an enemy nears it.
5. the seed number allows you to choose a specific map to play if you know which seed it is.

Nothing very useful. I think it pauses the unit until an AI unit passes within sight.

No positive benefits. Don't ever settle a city immediately adjacent to one unless you're prepared to rebuild it, possibly several times. Every time a volcano erupts, it spits out lava onto random adjacent tiles. Any unit or city that happens to be on that tile at the time is destroyed, as are any tile improvements, and the tile becomes polluted. Volcano eruptions are semi-random, but the likelihood of their eruption is based on game years, not turns, so eruptions are more likely to happen in the ancient and middle ages than thereafter.

4. Cows, or lack of them. I am still pretty much a Civ3 newbie but most games I started I would usually get a cow somewhere within range, but I see almost no cows at all in the test games I have started! Is this just luck of the draw or are they restricted somehow?

Every map is attached to a random seed number. If you get the seed for a particular map (there are utilities available that'll determine the seed for you), then you can re-create it using different civs, difficulty level, etcetera.

Check pages 25 to 33 in the Conquests manual for a description of many new features. The world map & communications change is on page 27.

Thanks very much.

Sorry, I hadnt realised there was a specific Conquests forum.

Yep, page 27. I did actually read the whole manual when I got the game yesterday but like so many things it went in one eye and out the other :)

So far, I think Conquests sucks. Doesnt really add much and runs about twice as slow as Civ 3 on my PC which is a bog standard 3Gig Intel with 1 Gig memory.

I did not mean to scare you away, just show you were to go. :)
You found it then?

Play for a while and you will love the new features. Also try the scenarios, some of them are really great IMHO :)

i assumed that volcanoes gave +2 shield. and map trading comes with navigation or something, not with printing press, iirc.

@Percy:

Communications trading - Printing Press.
Map trading - Navigation.

Volcanoes give shields, but you can't road or mine them.
