In the civilipedia it says that on a new continent that they can found cities... is this true or is the text wrong and from a former build of the game. Because if this is true... well this is amazing... how did I not know about this...?

They can!!!

They can, but keep in mind that the unit is destroyed upon founding a city.
Right - at first I thought this was a waste, but after some consideration, note that conquistadors wouldn't need a land unit escort, don't cost that many more hammers (or gold) than a settler, and most importantly, don't slow down a cities growth while producing. Only drawback is that they can't found a city on Madrid's continent.

When I played Spain, I played Archipelago (no Polynesia, Luck for me) and systematically used my conquistadors to found cities next to key ressources and wonders of nature. With other civs, you need settlers (no growth), land units (to kill barbs) and navy (to protect the former two while on the sea). Conquistadors have it all one - note they don't suffer combat penalties while embarked.

Boy, you were missing out on something!

Yeah! I just played as them on a Terra map, and boy it was fun! It's really cool and makes Spain who was already really good even better! Damn they are a well made Civ!!!

They're indeed amazing for clearing out barb camps on an uninhabited island and then immediately plopping down a city. You may want to be careful popping ruins with them because if you hit an upgrade ruin they lose this ability. Another thing to consider is, if you have high faith turnover and take holy warriors as a follower belief you can buy them for faith (270 in medieval and 400 in rennaissance). They also have ridiculous sight range.

I received a free conquistador from a militaristic city-state that I am allied with.

My conquistador does not have the "found city" option available. He is on a totally separate continent and the Spanish don't even exist as one of my rival civilizations!

Is it safe to say that you can only use the "found city" option when you are operating the conquistador unit as the Spanish?

Anybody seen this before?

It's fun to play Spain on a Terra map (loading the dice, I know) and send a wave of conquistadors out to colonize the "New World". Some found cities while the rest ride into the interior to conquer barbarians, befriend city states, and discover wonders before anyone else. I won a game as Spain that way because I had the benefit of natural wonders, city state alliances, and resources from the New World before anyone else (despite having only two homeland cities). One of the few times where gameplay and history actually converged to a fair extent.

No, I got them as gifts from a CS and they founded cities just fine.

BTW the unique units from city states are always from civs that aren't in the game.

Hmm. Weird. Is there something else that I'm doing wrong? Do I need to move the conquistador to another continent other than the one where he appeared?

Wondering if there is anything else that would keep him from being able to found a city...

You need to move him to a continent other than the one where your capital is, if I'm not mistaken.

It really is amazing that conquistadors can found cities and act like settlers while the same way legions can build roads and act like workers.

i looked it up in the book Global History and found conquistadors really existed in really life!!

I don't know if this is exactly true...I've gotten Khan units from city states when Mongolia was also in the game...

He was talking about Militaristic UUs,for which each Militaristic City-State draws one that isn't in the game. Khans cannot be one of these. You received the Khan from the Social Policy "Educated Elite", where allied City-States will give you Great People, with the Khan being one of the possibilities.

Also, dont forget that conquistador have no penalities attacking cities, so they can be very effective city takers as well.
