i have always wondered what is the difference between a xbox dvd and a pc dvd?

i know they aren't compatible but why?

is it have to do with that the cds are encrypted so only the regular console can read them?

It's the content, and how data is stored that matters.

I don't think the content's encrypted - symmetric is too easy to crack... MS won't use it. Asymmetric is too CPU-cycle consuming... XBox can't make it. Anyway the encryption key has to be hardcoded and cannot be changed - means it's eventually breakable - thus MS won't use it.

Though I've never have any XBox CDs to play with... I don't see why I need to buy XBox - my PC is much more powerful than it is.

Because you get those really cool and big x-box controllers that are so much better then the microsoft controllers you can get...oh wait

Not 100% sure, but I think that rather than being a data storage difference, its a data content / file structure difference.

The data is probably just in a completely different format - one that's not readible by standard windows (much like trying to read a NTFS-formatted hard-disk on windows 95).

The Xbox uses a different file structure system than the UDF that PC's use, they also read the disc 'backwards', from the outside in.

It's meant to combat piracy, as PC's can't read the discs, or burn them. Did'nt work.

It also means that they are prevented from the calling the disc's DVD's, as the name is copywrited and must confirm to standards to be called that. If you look at the game box's, they don't feature the DVD logo, like PS2 games do.
