I've been playing immortal difficulty for about a month now, and I've only won about 3 games out of maybe 7 or 8. That, however, was before I patched my game to the latest version, and discovered that making money was far more difficult than before... The previous version I played on also still had all the original Social Policies, which made it a lot easier for me to plan out my Immortal CPU strategy. I also didn't realize they made all these changes to the buildings, like giving some buildings the ability to provide +1 food/production bonuses to certain tiles, or raising/lowering maintenance costs on others. It seems to me, that if you can't settle your initial cities on a coast, or a river, with VERY good tiles, you will constantly be losing money. Am I wrong on this? Also, I find it very annoying that I can no longer make any money from trade routes, even with minimal city spacing distance.
I can't think of any great way to overcome this. Trade posts only seem like a viable option if you have grasslands/flood plains nearby, and rivers/lake farm tiles for supplying the extra food once you get civil service.
