Convert Classic Civ2 or Test of Time to Civ2 GOLD!

Would it be possible to make this patch run through the Installation Wizard? Or, would that be unnecessary?

Mayve TOTers should ask Tact for insights... He downgraded his TOT to MGE in no time.

Gjts and everyone else listen carefully. First I would recommend installing a "clean" version of ToT into a seperate directory. Then update it to version 1.1 with the Test of Time: version 1.1 patch . Now without editing any of the files install the ToTtoMGE patch. This should work, if it doesn't I have no idea what to tell you.

I've followed your directions to the best of my ability. It is possible however that I may have done something wrong. I still get the same results. I uninstalled & reinstalled ToT. Then, I downloaded & installed the 1.1 patch (which I hadn't done before). I then tried to install the ToT package that you recommended into my h: which is where my ToT is located & I got that unknown version message again. If you can't help me any further with this problem, might you know where I can get the help that I need?

Well I posted instructions on my page to guide you through the process of installing the ToTtoMGE.exe. For sake of compatibility I wrote it in Notepad but the Word wrap doesn't cross over on the web browser so I would recommend copying and pasting and turning the word wrap back on for ease of reading. Anyway if it still doesn't work after this the I guess your stuck with ToT.

How do I check to see if me version is set up for the WIN9x platform?

I have Windows 98.

Hopefully this is my last post in this thread... alright Gj your ToT is not installed on a cd-r(w), zip disk, or any other compressed drive or disk is it? That would explain the access denied with the zips and the not letting you use the exe. I'm really streching for a reason here...

I got it to work! I ended up having to create a new folder to install ToT in. I just used c:\GAMES. After I did that, the converter took on the first try. So, there's another possible solution if anyone else is/was having the same problem.

Hi Cedric, downloaded your patch a week ago and it works great except... I don't know if this is just affecting my copy or whether anyone else has noticed it, but whenever I kill a Civilization, the game crashes on me!

Doh! Ummmm what version did you upgrade from? Classic, CiC, FW, or ToT? and what was the version #? As far as I know this is the only case of this, or I assume it would have been brought to my attention much sooner.

I've dowloaded the 5 MGE patches unzipped it with winzip and then i put it to civ2(i have the original version) but when i try to put the 1st MGE icon into the civ2 icon..i get a message error...What shall i do?

:::aside::: Here I am again. OK Icons, are we talking about the icons on the start bar/desktop or are we talking about the icons.gif or something else. Also does the game run, if so I wouldn't worry about icons too much.

I put the 5 MGE patches(unzipped) into civ2 and now when i want to play i have an error message...i can't play.
P.S: i have the Jewel Case(the original civ, scenarios and fantastics worlds)... i can have it in english or in french but my version is french.

I can play when i open windows explorer go to Mps then civ2 and civ2 orig...another option that wasnt here b4(civ2 or map editor) but i can only via windows explorer and i don't think it's MGE.

You have Classic, CiC, and FW on one disk? I think I've heard of this before, but I believe it was only released in Europe. The Civ2.exe gives an error message right? What exactly is the error message? It's probably something to do with missing .txt files or something. Anyway I'll be at work all day so if you want to get it working today I would try the following.
Reinstall the game, pick custom install and if its an option choose original or required files only.
Install the 2.42 patch and start the game. If it starts install the MGE zips and hopefully it will work. If not I have ICQ and will prolly be of more help in real time than over the message board.
Anyway I might wanna start a thread in Computer Tech Support as this thread has gotten much longer than necessary.

Text I upgraded from v.2.42. The game only breaks down when I kill a Civ in a hotseat game, I was playing a multiplayer game over the internet and it worked fine when I killed a Civ. Very strange...

Damien I think I have figured out your problem, though then again maybe not
wink.gif
Try installing Civ2classic in English then install the 2.42 update (if your classic version isn't 2.42) then install the patch. (My version of)MGE is English only and is prolly lookin for English words in the texts and not finding them. If this doesn't help than I'm not sure I can do anything

Our Man this is indeed strange as I tested it out in Hotseat and nothing else. I'll retry it and see what happens.
