Converting a ruler to your religion?

I've only been playing Civ4 for a weekend, and am loving it.

I've got one question though. I've gone to speak to various rulers and under the convert and adopt sections of the diplomacy screen, I can't find any religions or civics. Under what circumstances can you request a ruler to convert to your religion?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if there is some tech that is required, but usually on the trading screen, on the very bottom of the left-hand list there should be a "Convert to..." tree folder.

He needs to have cities that have the religion to convert to it. The option is likely to be red if there's few cities, but not enough. Better send a horde of missionaries.

good luck with it if you try it. Every time I have converted someone so far they just switch back to their old religion like 10 turns later.

Yeah, they converted back for me too. That's probably because they had a holy city.
