Hi there, I was wonder if someone could descibe the differences in converting to another civ's religion or having them convert to mine. what are the benifits, who benifits more, what are the statistics?

The benefits for both civs to have the same religion would be better relations with each other. Whoever holds the holy city for that religion (and has it as their state religion) benefits: they gain line of sight to every city with that religion, and a small amount of gold from every city with that religion.

Well there aren't any statistics; it's just not that kind of system. But here's a decent list.

1) If you found a religion, you get the holy city. Having the holy city of your state religion gives you LOS to all cities with that religion, even if you're at war with them. Also, you can use a Great Prophet to build a shrine, which gives you 1 gold/turn for every city of that religion.
2) AIs that share your religion like you; AIs that have different religions don't like you. For this it doesn't matter who has the holy city.
3) You need a religion to access a lot of aspects of the game. For example, the religious civics Organized Religion, Theocracy, and Pacifism only affect your cities that have your state religion. Further, having a state religion gives a :) and a culture point to every city of yours that has that religion- basically, it's a free temple. Doesn't matter what it is, or where the holy city is, but you need something. Also, you have to have a religion to build temples, monasteries, and cathedrals.

Basically, the best thing is to found a religion, which means being the first to research the appropriate tech. Second best is to get one from a rival civ. Worst case is to not have one.
