Cookbook #3 (Culture victory)

The deadline has passed. Sadly only 3 participants. You are all free to discuss your games. I will allow some late submissions, but keep in mind not to participate in any discussions before you submit.

My game:

Spoiler :

I moved scout SW to see if I would move away from resources by settling on marble. No such resources so on marble it is!

I do some thinking, and see that this capital has potential to be a early production megacenter working cows, ivory, riverside PH and GH and a farmed or cottaged (or just unimproved) floodplain yielding 17 hammers.
With the marble underneth capital, and being a Phi-Cre leader I want to get to writing early for cheap libraries and fast GPersons. I also want to make a try for oracle to get CoL for caste-system and an early religion.

I went AH->Mining->Writing, then started to climb my way up the myst line with myst->poly, then masonry to start putting hammers into ToAr which may be useful to finish, Gprophets can be helpful when going for culture since religions usually play a role (you want access to at least 2 religions, but preferably 3-4, to build cathedrals for +50% culture bonus.
When choose religions is enabled, it's really important to pick the religions that align up with the strategic resources you have, such that you dont' pick judaism if you lack stone for the jewish cathedral.

Here at T5, I'm starting to think about my future cities.
The one on the PH close to the fish has alot of river which is nice.
Probably want a city SW close to that river too.
The usual cultural path is to get at least 2 cities that can be massive commercial centers with loads of cottages.
You then go for a third city which can generate loads of artists which you use to culture bomb the city most behind.

Access to ivory do open up the possibility for a smooth construction attack, and possibly taking a future legendary city.

T50 overview:
I'm rushing out a GSci which I planned to settle for a quick early boost. An interesting possibility would be to bulb math, to be able to get currency from oracle as we could get a small fortune from selling small techs to Khan and SB.
Probably want to go through maths toward construction soon anyway for half-price odeons which will take care of happines issues for a forseeable future.
Oh, and the glorious elephants ofcourse. :)

Thoughts on my save.

Spoiler spoilers :

Perhaps should of put Sparta on the plains hill. I was thinking of a wheat city which could run 4 flood plains. Due to early techs I opted for the fish site. My spaced out cities are hitting my science.

So AH and early bronzeworking for me. Could still switch to writing instead of TW. Either way this start either requires great people or cottages. Lost quite a few worker turns hopping between eastern and western cities. An early library could really help science here.

My main concern maybe is commerce and early science. Probably could still sneak a late Oracle. Downside to Oracle is you risk early GP points.

Should of twigged map settings sooner and tried for worker stealing. This can backfire if Ai spam archers.

Should have 4 cities set up soon so writing next may be better for science. Then see if I can grab Oracle.

Yes shame only 3 saves so far.

@Gumbolt
I don't think that GPP pollution is a problem here really.
The capital won't run many specialists with all hills and little surplus food, so it's likely that GPerson #2 and #3 is from other cities other than the capital IF one desires that.
I think a GProphet could be beneficial here to bulb theocracy, especially if one uses oracle for somethign other than CoL.
Ofcourse one can spread an AIs religion too and get cathedrals that way, but that would aid them since they so often go for a shrine.

I do think that your workermovements have been to your detriment, I stayed at one worker too and felt that I was very streched as it was. The unimproved copper in your capital really hurts my eyes. :)
Solid position with cities pretty far on each side though, blocking off a huge territory down south. I think that I'm risking settlement from Khan with my rather late third city.
I made the call that I do have enough land to the south anyway, and that there is always the possibility for a elephant breakout.
I think that from your save, continuing for pottery is the way to go. You can squeeze out some early reserach from a library, but cottages are stronger long term.

Amazed by your army of workers @Swordnboard I don't have any experience with that level of workerstealing. When I do go for it, it's just one worker, sometimes two. But only from one AI. :)
Can you put them to an advantage though? I suspect that the marginal utility for each new worker now is pretty low. Do you continue mainly to damage the AI that you have infuriated?

Yes worker stealing really is a game changer and on the right map can give the player a huge advantage. 4-5 workers now could be a huge advantage.

Yes I pondered corn vs copper decision. At time I went food. It was a strange opening given techs. Perhaps I should of pushed for a 2nd worker sooner.

@krikav: You're right that the marginal utility of each worker goes down. But especially once BW comes in even workers 5-6 can be of considerable value. One main benefit I see is not having to choose between chops & improvements. In cookbook #1, say, some people went for chops and expansion, others for early cottages, but worker steals allow us to do both at the same time to good effect. Crippling the AI is a secondary benefit I'd say. 3 workers each (or actually 2 workers + 1 settler in the case of genghis) is enough stifling to keep them from sending stacks my way anytime soon. Not sure if I'll continue trying to steal or just let them develop a bit before the inevitable elephant attack.

Interesting city placement differences from everyone. Curious to hear others' rationale for both location and sequence. I figured I would settle the corn spot first to help pump out more settlers, and built it close to the capital to share a couple of cottages & establish trade connetion more easily. Floodplains + wheat next, then fish I think. In my case I'm not a huge fan of the fish spot earlier because I have workers out my ears and would rather not have to build a WB to develop food, but it is a strong tile and a nice spot.

Not sure how farfetched the oracle is or how large the benefit of COL would be. FWIW the AI didn't seem to jump on stonehenge or early religions, so maybe it will go later than usual. Without BW it looks like you could reach oracle 6-7 turns after priesthood. Don't think I would try it on deity, but good thing this is immortal!

If I would do an oracle try with this map on deity, I would have postponed writing. Now I felt that I had enough time.

I took aim for everything cultural right away, and founding a few religions was high priority for me.
The benefits of CoL is abit lower since we already have culture due to cre, so I'm not all that certain about that venture.
But with a math bulb there is two tempting other possibilities, currency or construction.

Postponed agriculture, so the fish+sheep city was more or less the only alternative that made sense, also trade routes after culture covers the river+coast, so no wheel was needed either.
Settling cities and claiming land I prioritized very low. Inland sea usually provides alot of land for everyone. And since we have elephants we are guaranteed enough cities "one way or another" ;)

Capturing religion cities should also be possible. Bulbing some religions too I guess.Ai might spam some. Hmmm. We'll need culture from cities one way or another.

Would be nice to have a 4th save here. What is plan?

Since there are no more saves to discuss, I suggest to play on for the 2nd round.
All saves are good to go. Let's say... Up to 1AD t115.

P.S.
Maybe we could make this cookbook into some sort of shadowplay to get more people involved.

Not sure why this Cookbook has been so slow. I will likely play on from my own save albeit it wasn't a great effort. Good rex but poor economy.

Shadow play? I don't think it would get a huge following. Pends who is about and impact of real life.

Worker stealing is so strong on a map like this. Albeit the 2 neighbouring AI will be a pain if they hook up metal or start spamming archers. How easily will the AI take peace?

May have some time on Monday to play this. See how things pan out.

Will try again this weekend. Been a slow week on this section. Is everyone playing the new Civ 6 release?

Alot of action IRL. Haven't had any time to play at all. Barely had time to check forums. :)
