Corp Inflation Solution Thread

assumed that you've to spread your corporations carefully - at least in your own empire, what to do if i conquer corporation-spammed enemy cities? i don't think the corporations are destroyed, aren't they?

Generally, the best design targets the minority and serves the majority. This means that nothing about the design breaks the high-end game, but the game is still fun for everyone of all ages.

In the example of Civ4, this would mean that features wouldn't be broken at Immortal/Deity, but they'd still be fun to use at Settler.

That sounds awfully altruistic, but I'll accept it as an "ideally" rather than a "generally". However, I have seen nothing to indicate that Corporations are broken at immortal/deity. I've only played up through Prince and am starting a Monarch game now and I'll see if my experience changes, though I doubt it.

I meant it when I said generally. Supporting high-end play allows your newbies and casual fans to slowly become devoted veteran players. If the game only caters to the casual crowd, it will often fall to the wayside as the players break its mechanics. If the game only caters to the minority, then it won't sell to the casual crowd. Hence, generally, the best designs manage both. I would even say it is the mark of a truly great game, for a game that caters to everyone may attain both longevity and popularity.

The mod is not save game compatible (in the sense that is will not load Vanilla saved games). If the mod IS loading those for you, chances are the DLL is in the wrong folder (my bad there :mischief: ) - if so, please see http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=5731300#post5731300.

I've put it in my .../Beyond the Sword/Custom Assets/ folder. And it works save game compatible. This is where I always put the Better AI.dll and I'd be surprised if this worked any different.

I only send Mining executives to three, maybe four, cities. The rest go to vassals and opponents. In one game they made me rich, in another they netted me nothing, but the bonuses I got from my three production cities were worth the income I sacrificed. So basically my experience is, if you are selective, you get a bonus and if you are selective and lucky, you get a bonus and gold. How is this completely broken?

It's not completely broken - no one is saying that. It's partly broken, in the sense it's not working as intended when inflation is factored in. It's not all that hard to believe it was possible there was not enough play testing involving corps in the late game, that they missed this bug. I suspect their implementation of the Advanced Start feature was used to test many late game features. As someone in the forums noted however, the Advanced Start does not work in the same way when considering inflation.

Anyway, regarding your suggestion... I would argue you're proving it's broken because you only spread it to a couple of your cities (which I don't think is worth it anyway, even for the hammers) and yet spam it to your enemies. Corporations were designed to give a roughly positive benefit. They were not put in the game as weapons. Why do so many think that using corps primarily as weapons is how they were intended? If you go over pre-release information, the developers were saying corporations were going to benefit your cities. I don't think anyone is complaining that corps have maintenance costs. By far the majority of people who are complaining are suggesting the developers didn't realise the impact inflation had on the costs. Again, I find it easy to believe the play testers did not test thoroughly far enough into the late game to notice the dramatic costs.

Half the problem here is that for much of this debate we've been arguing with people who do not own the game, let alone played it into the late game. The corporation maintenance - inflation tie is broken. Simple.

Nice one, that's the information I'm looking for - save game compatibility! :D

How does this mod appear on the finances screen (F2)? Does it correctly display the new way of calculating the finances?

I gave that a try - the game does not appear to load the modified dll when placed in that location. I verified the saved game incompatability by replacing the "Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets\CvGameCoreDLL.dll" file with the modded version.

Yes and no. The number next to Inflation in that window is accurate, however if you hover your mouse over "Inflation" the text displayed is not. For example, say your city maintenance was 50 and 25 of that was from corporations with an inflation rate of 100 (let's assign all other expenses a value of 0). You would see something like this:

Unit Cost 0
Unit Supply 0
City Maintenance 50
Civic Upkeep 0
Inflation 25

Total Expenses 75

However, when you hover your mouse over "Inflation" you'll see:
Total costs before Inflation = 50
Inflation Rate = 100%
Cost due to Inflation (100% of 50) = 50
