COTM 15 Pre-game Discussion

For the 20K players, settling east and sending the 20K settler west will probably be optimal.

The west site, on initial inspection, is better for 20K. So unless going for 20K in the capital....

I'll probably go east, since it looks as if the river could continue east for a ways, and that'll probably make for a good third city spot close to the capital. It isn't much, but with the warning about evil neighbors, we'll need to get our cities up and running very quick.

I can see another problem here. If you go for the Republic slingshot you'll probably find Caesar or Ghenghis declaring war just as the republic recession sets in and your unit support can be counted on one hand. Maybe trying for a transitional monarchy would be best.

Cities count when the AI assesses your strength. With this start a farmer's gambit may be in place no matter who your ops are.

I'll definitly settle west. Afaics the only difference between the two sites is one more BG to the west. Who is to say which is the longest of the two rivers, the eastern or the western one?

India...fun stuff. I think I like East a little more. There are more river tiles for the capital which will translate into more commerce. I'll wait for more opinions for a final choice though. More than likely I'll go north to find some better land. :p

I have a bad feeling about that jungle.. I wouldn't be surprised if it continued to the north, east and west... Oh, I hate jungle so much!

Starting in the middle of a pangaea map.. hmm, may be good or really bad thing...
I feel this is not going to be a typical GOTM. :)

 obermot

However, elephants could be Cavalry in the derived sense of the word, i.e. a mobile military unit.

If tanks can be in the cavalry, why not elephants? :p

Yes you’ve guessed it, it’s 20k time again!

Hmmm east or west, I might just fool everyone and go south! I bet there’s at least a dozen or so cows on the other side of that forest.....

With it being only Monarch I’ll definitely be doing nearly all the research myself and I’m going to be pretty selfish and not trade anything away. The big decision is whether I should have the 20K city as the capital this time around. Something to think about anyway.

Build order will most likely be:
Warrior
Settler (At this point I decide which will be the 20K city)

20K City______Other City
Temple_______Granary
Wonders______Workers

Then once I’ve reached size 12 in my 20K city and improved all the needed tiles I will start building settlers, and starting planning on how I’m going to get those great leaders as soon as possible. Anyway I am glad I'm not going to have to be building ships again, I really really really really hate ships

In Conquest, you can rush only Small Wonders and Improvements with them. Great Wonders have to be built brick by brick, so I think you are well advised to have the second city as your Culture city and use the Palace as pre-build.

A note about the Golden Hill.

Am I right to assume that not only shields, but also gold is netted from the automatically selected tile at population growth? I believe I have observed this.
No, gold is added before any city events are calculated.

You forgot Germany?

I think that where you build the capital doesn't really matter. If one has slightly better tiles than the other, there's not that big a difference between the capital and a rank 1 city.

Ainwood likes to put in historical enemies, so I left out the Germans and Zulus.

I am thinking that the only reason we were so lucky as to have 2 cows at the start is because we will need a boat-load of workers to chop down all the surrounding jungle. Such an optimist...

I am going to put my capital one SW of east cow then build a settler first to go one W of start just to be different.

Man I hope the Mongols aren't right next to us; I don't trust Genghis any further than I can throw him.

I like predator conditions and I will go for it this time, despite my goal is domination (I do suspect that I will not be able to built a horseman before chivalry anyway).

I think that the western direction is better than the eastern. Not only because of an extra bg, but also because of more forest and an additional river (more gold).

On another hand if I will follow Peu Feredo's suggestion to build a settler and then a worker and I think I will, it does not matter where I will go since both cities will be built before any of above-mentioned differences will matter.
Anyway I go west.

Map: Sounds too cold for India, brrrr.

Well, yes, it does.
I tried several warm and wet, though, and none of them turned out to be as good as this one.

I was also considering some food-poor start, but after Ainwood's two last GotM... :ack: and then can you have India without cows? ;)

by the way, no Germany this time.

Oh, I also tried a little experiment: I let the AI play India (without interfering in the game of course). I didn't really take too many notes, but I will post how they fared in the spoilers.

has anyone found any luxuries? i have a bad feeling that maybe there is no such thing as a luxury anywhere 20 tiles from where we stand right now...

and as for the surrounded-by-jungles scenario, when do you guys normally start a massive jungle-clearing movement in your game?

Does "no Germany" mean "no re-named Germany"? As if the X-man wion't be nasty enough...
