COTM 23 - Final spoiler

Ancient Age

I settled in place next to the two cows, iron, 3bgs and gold. Oh wait that was me dreaming.

I suspect that I played this part of the game like everyone else, only less successfully. I made my long trek to the fish, and settled in the middle of the four of them. My 7 archer rush to take out Delhi was victorious first time. The rest of this age was spent building roads through endless mountain ranges to link up towns and resources, killing barbarians and settling in the same spots as everyone else.

Middle Ages

After the fun start, this is where the grind set in. I had been harbouring desires to win some sort of military VC at this point but soon tired of that idea. I waged war with the Incans first and eventually knocked them out with some rather glacial warfare using med infs. Next came the Sumerians and progress was similarly slow. But eventually I took them out too. At this point I was confronted with the enormous task of shipping over my laughable troops and starting the conquest of the other civs. This is when I abandonned all hope, and decided to go for a space race win.

Industrial Age

This was spent researching and trading hard. I set up Delhi with the iron works as my spaceship builder. My Sumerian war was actually still lingering on but not much interesting was happening.

Modern Age

On discovering I had no aluminium to complete my space race I settled on a diplo win, built the UN, signed a few MPPs, went to war with a couple of people got some alliances and won the vote. Woohoo? Not really.

My middle and industrial ages were pretty dull. I was busy getting rid of the Incas and the Sumerians which was a slow and painful process without horses. Incredibly late I got my first leader and joyfully built an army that defected to the enemy two turns later when Sumer flipped back to the Sumerians.

At this point I nearly gave the game up but decided to hang on when I finally managed to trigger my golden age. Shortly after getting infantry I took out the Sumerians and was now proud owner of a mountain island and a desert half moon.

When I reached the industrial age I needed to finally decide on a victory condition. I saw that I controlled the only oil resource :thanx: and that the only horses resource was off the reach of the stupid AIs so that I would be the only one able to build units that had more than 1MP. Although my military was weak this still gave me some hopes that I could take on the AIs.

When the location of Alu was revealed I saw that the Dutch had both Alu and Rubber conveniently located and decided to take them out. At the same time the Maya were getting closer and closer to a 100k victory and I needed to do something against them, too. I decided to go for Space hoping that I would be able to get Uranium.

I launched my attack on the dutch and started razing their cities and resettling the space. Soon I controlled Alu and Rubber and also got some nice luxuries for myself. When I had almost taken out the Dutch I settled for peace and went for the Maya. At the same time I was already busy building spaceship parts. There was Uranium both in Mayan and Celt territory and I was sure I could get one of them somehow.

The only purpose of the war against the Maya was to destroy their capital (with lots of nice wonders) to cripple their culture production and make their live horrible on general. After razing it I settled for peace and a ROP, declared on the Celts and sent some settlers to claim their Uranium. The Celts had no means to stop me and soon I had to Uranium connected to build the final parts of my ship.

Not a great date but I am happy I made it with that crappy start:

I loved the COTM 23 map. Played the thing half a dozen times in a 48-72 hour period. Looks like there weren't very many submissions because this thread is a short one.

I love playing your maps, have played every one since COTM1, but never submitted. I'm of the camp let's have fun and if reload is better, do it, thus have never entered.

I know it's a lot of work to do COTM/GOTM and you guys have tons of other things requiring your attention. I want you all to know I appreciate your efforts and hope you continue the COTM.

This is my first submitted game. I don't know how unusual this was for a challenge, but the game got the better of me.

I got terribly bogged down with displacing the indians. I hate to admit it but it took me until 1200AD. When I finally broke thru I knew it was going to be hopeless, but I had fun trying to beat the odds. I had quite a bit of fun scrapping with the inca's and with sumeria over the mud flats going slow at first but much faster once the UU came out of production. It is very sweet to be able to kill the AI's units without risk to your own.

things sped up even more when I got the artilery and rails hooked up. I was growing so fast I couldn't keep up and had to leave cities behind me with no military. my troopies were taking sumerian cities about as fast as they could walk to them in the end.

I knew I was doomed when the mayans started the UN. They never called a vote though instead they kept building spaceship parts. they had one to go when they tipped the cultural scales over for a win.

So my first submission is a loss, and a low score at that, but I think if I could have fought on I could have gotten to a domination win by 2050. it would have been bloody, but I definately had gotten to the point where I know how to dominate the AI's.

I think Im going to have to replay this one a few times and see what happens if I can get the beatdown put on Gandhi a lot faster.

Entry class: Conquest
Game status: Cultural 20K Loss to Maya
Game date: 1986 AD
Firaxis score: 386
Jason score: 293
Time played: 31:59:37

It's become pretty obvious that I'm not going to complete this one and am curious about the incomplete submission process.

How is score calculated?

Does it count as a win or loss?

Do I need to submit anything except the last same I complete?

Thanks.

Go to the submission form and select the retirement option in the pulldown/popup menu. Upload your last save. Your game is recorded as a retirement, and scored the same as a loss, with no Jason victory bonus. You are not eligible for the ambulances, but your score is included in the global rankings - better than logging no score at all for this game.

It was fun - but too time-consuming for me. 26 players have submitted (only 2 QSC) but at least one of them is incomplete.

It was my first game in which a diplo victory was the fastest to achieve - I really do not know how to win these :wallbash:

I had built UN in 1690 and draw a tie because it was not Mayas (most land) to compete but William :hmm:

I played the last turns several times in different ways after submitting but never found out, how the opponent was chosen. Once it was Alexander, then William an danother time this Mayan leader. I really have to look up the rules explained by Satchel somewhere in the war academy...

So I had to submit a retired game which I could also have canceled.

I wanted to skip Gotm54 (and Ptw in general) but for my GPR it suddenly becomes more important

In details:

Most will have experienced the beginning as I did: workers closes in on hut, Delhi founded right there. We discover this is the only access to sea, so lets have some early warfare (peaceful builder, anyone?). I plan to do it with archers because I don't want to wait for IW with warfare. But they shall be veterans.

plan:
research: Writing, CoL, Philosophie at max.
build: warrior, barracks, warrior, 4 archers, settler.

1500 research philosophy sling shot
210 meet the Inca, trade CoL, Currency, Republic for all AA techs.
enter MA, get Engineering. Way back behind Greek, Maya, Celts and Dutch.
1030 enter IA, get Steam Engine. Greek also know it.
trade to tech parity with Celts, Greek, Dutch and Maya.
At war with Sumeria, Incas finished around 950.
1420 elimate Sumeria. Who's next?
Greek pay 190 gpt, Dutch 90 gpt, Celts give Wines, Dyes, Silks - guess Mayas are due.
They also have Pyramides and Sun Tzu while Celts have Leo's.
I'll go right on the capital, move my own capital there and start through building tanks...
Mayas' capital is protected just by 5 pikes and 3 rifles. They produce a rifle per turn at 117 spt
Celts don't have any rubber...

1460 36 Hwach'as, 9 MI, 8 Guerrilla, 2 riflemen and two MI-armies sneak attack Celts,
capture Entremont, Gergovia (Leo's), Alesia.
Sign in Dutch and Mayas for combustion.
Start GA (by mistake, bombing with >30 Hwach'as is boring and hitting a 3-hp-spear might bring a 1-hp-pike to front... )

IBT counterattack on MI gets us a GL!

1465 Rush palace in Entremont. Another GL founds army.

1555 Enter Modern Times. Get Ecology for free.

1565 Eliminate Celts. Possession of 34% of worls area  and 26% of population :hmm:
fastest conquest trophy might be awarded for a 16xx victory this time :ack:
Golden Age ends...

1585 Sign MPP with Greek (who also have an MPP with Mayas). Declare on Mayas but let them attack first.

1690 build UN. Get no decission :suicide:

Submit a retired game. Jason? Not worth telling

Moderator Action: Post moved from results thread to spoiler thread

I don't even remember the last time I posted but what the hey.

From what I remember the game started out like everyones. A lot of WTH !!! followed by should I quit or keep going.

Anyway, Tried to expand as much as possible (going for domination) and figured the resourses would be few and far between. I got lucky and captured the GL early on and tried to take over "desert world" before I got behind in techs. When I saw the only horses on a small island I sent two settlers and a bunch of defenders to claim the land. Rush built anything with culture and crossed my fingers I could keep it until I could build and airport. (OK so I landed and built before I realized I couldnt build a harbour)

I hoped none of the AI would get enough of the resourses to build anything stronger that riflemen. That didn't work as they started to build tanks I ran for and prebuilt the UN. I won vote number one.

Not what I had planned, but hey at least I survived.
