COTM105 Rome: First spoiler - Middle ages and all local contacts

attachment.php

It's about time we had a Roman deity game!

To read further down the thread than this post, or to post anything at all yourselves you must have played the game into the middle ages and made contact with all opposing tribes in local continent or group of continents

Please keep screenshots to about 20X20 tiles centered on the start position and do not show minimaps. Please do no discuss any events, contacts or resource locations from the middle ages onwards.

You couldn't have wanted for a better start, so what path did you take to victory? :)

This is my first Deity game (I've won two Demigod games prior to this), so I was hoping it would be an interesting challenge.

So far, I haven't felt quite the same sense of panic and imminent death as in my Demigod games. The start location was great (I chose to settle SE, so I had access to the cattle from Turn 2), and I put my second city on the cattle+wheat location to the NW of the starting area.

I just tried to close off the Egyptians from taking over too much of my area at the start, which wasn't too hard since it was just the two of us. I probably had about eight cities when I started my first war with them. I bought the Babylonians into the war (they had some cities at the top of our continent near them). When I made peace twenty turns later, I had taken the Egyptians' capital and one city past that, plus I had one legionary army and a fair number of elites. Persia joined the dogpile on Egypt at some point as well. I didn't get into Republic until fairly late (post Golden Age, so that was a pity), and I started another brief (6-8 turns) war with the Egyptians that concluded the turn that I entered the middle ages (picking up Feudalism for the cheap price of 130 gold and, iirc, 19gpt) -- I originally started it with the intent of losing some units to decrease my unit upkeep, but I don't think I lost I think I'm pretty late getting into the MA though, since it took me until 50AD.

I'm only two techs behind my neighbors now (monarchy and engineering), but I know others are more advanced (I saw someone starting Leonardo's a while ago, and someone else finished Sun Tzu's before I got into the MA). I have a sizeable army, but very little culture and few improvements in my cities (aside from one temple for border expansion, I didn't build anything other than settlers, workers, barracks, warriors, spearmen, and legionaries until after I entered Republic).

Overall, I'm feeling very comfortable. The great starting location has made everything feel very much under control for me thus far. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to eliminate Egypt relatively soon into the MA, and pushing Persia and Babylonia from my continent doesn't seem like it should be too difficult. I'm a bit worried about the potential of the other AIs getting way ahead of me, but I figure I should be able to catch them with all the territory I'll have taken from Egypt. I'm looking forward to finding out; it's been a very fun game so far.

so right you are! ;)

I felt i cannot miss on this great combination even though I actually do not have any time for a game like this...

the start was great, actually too good, so I tried for the full sling. and failed miserably. what a setback, that was it for a medal in this game... :(
i self-researched Rep then and got it around 700bc-600bc or so, not as the first civ. in i believe 750bc i started my first war against Egypt, which was very tough. i lost two settlers and a few workers and most of my tiny army to them. they apperently are the strongest nation in the world. still.

anyway, i can make peace during my anarchy phase and at least got some land cleared for two more good towns of my own. my combat luck was nonexisting though... lost lots of units and had to trigger my GA with 2 turns still in anarchy. could have been worse still... and at least one thing that worked out: my early war brought me an MGL! with the 6th e victory. but what to do with him? rush the FP in the new-founded FP town? or form an army for the next war? with a GA in my Hands to build up my army I would prefer to take the FP instantly, however, Egypt has her GA also to build up troops! difficult decision (another one after where to settle... btw, i chose 1 NW, with another pop factory 2W from there). no food bonus for the first 10 turns... and with no ss i am sure that my start was less-than-ideal.

i got all contacts already and will probably make my last own research for a while, Mono, since the other two first tier techs were drawn by the SCI tribes.

through trade i do have 4 luxes currently, 2 domestic. iron and horses connected.

will have to make some more thoughts on how to continue this game.

in any case I can already announce today that 2 more weeks playing time would help me a lot to be sure to get this one ready... :please:

:lol::lol::lol:

yesterday i wondered why i never heard of a Roman general named Mattia Destro - sure enough, it is an Italian soccer player, as Wikipedia just tells me :D
my knowledge of history is definitely better than my knowledge of contemporary sport facts.

...well since you asked so nicely... I've asked Alan to extend to 21st June. Try to get it done by then if you can. If not, I might be persuaded to extend again. Let's see.

The entire Roma football team is available. Let's see who can get the most leaders - I'll know how many you got from the last leaders name you quote.

Yeah, I noticed, I am currently at 'Gervinho' ... And thanks for the extension.

If I was that clever I would have realised this game coincided with the world cup and done exactly that. My Bad!
